What exactly is "the Sussex Squad"?

I don't know whether this is too controversial a topic for such a thread to be allowed to stand. But I post in good faith on a topic I believe has a lot of social and political relevance.

Does the "Sussex Squad" actually exist? If so, how do you join? If not, do people ever identify as belonging to it?

If it exists, was it hijacked by SarahData and Bouzy or was it their creation? And, if so, to what extent?

Thanks in advance.

I wonder if the whole Sussex Squad thing would have gained much traction without the covid lock downs. That was such a weird time and it might explain the distended in reach between the conspiracies that are spread by them and things that were written in other 'team' online conflicts.

There is of course also the other factor of how things would have been different for the Sussexes themselves if they hadn't left just before lockdown, but that's another thread.

Oh my word, difference not distended!

Or is it that M presented herself on Oprah as having been mistreated by the RF for racial reasons; that then caused a lot of Americans to take against the RF; and Nefarious Anti -UK/West/Commonwealth destabilisers have since fuelled that into something that could become more politically sigificant?

I honestly don't think it's that deep.

The 'squad', for the most part at least, aren't principled anti monarchists.

If Charles were to announce that all was forgiven and that Harry and Meghan were welcomed back as working royals, they'd be thrilled. They support their use of the royal titles and always use them to refer to their heroes.

I think this is a case of 'side taking' getting out of control in the confines of the internet. Also, I do think there is an element of sunk costs. They have 'invested' in a particular narrative for some time now, so they're not about to let facts or nuance interfere with that.

That should say I like "bling" not being.

I missed the edit window.

I will say, much as I enjoyed the Coronation, it was far too deficient in tiaras, crowns/coronets and jewels.

Everyone should have been rigged out in as many tiaras and coronets as the Country has. I wanted the Abbey so full of bling the cameras couldn't focus on the dazzle.

Totally agree, the European royals get their crowns, coronets and tiaras at every available opportunity and look magnificent, our RF don’t, I’m bored of seeing the same tiara on Catherine and Sophie it’s about time Charles cracked open the vaults and let them loose.

It would be a brave women who next wore the one Meghan got married in.

Pity about that really, it was gorgeous. I’d take one for the team and give it an airing.

He can't find them. That's because they're wrapped up carefully and they're in Angela Kelly's back bedroom wardrobe. Sssh

I'd fight you for it, @PinkTonic I thought it was stunning! I liked it much better than the emerald one she'd apparently wanted.

Have to agree with @MrsFinkelstein about the bling. Although I loved those garland things Catherine et al wore at the coronation too.

IsoldeWagner · 07/04/2024 15:08

Imagine being given a choice of those beautiful, historic tiaras, laid out on the table for a try on.
Lovely 😍.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 07/04/2024 15:22

I'd require a full hair and makeup do-over first @IsoldeWagner . I have standards. I'd also want souvenir photographs, and they can photoshop me all they like.

IsoldeWagner · 07/04/2024 15:24

According to Harry, the late Queen told Meghan that she had good hair for tiaras!

I’m surprised the sinister men in grey didn’t counsel her never to give M a compliment!

Thank you for the interesting thread.

I just don’t think H&M would be that foolish as to be giving orders to the Sussex Squad. They are foolish but I can’t see them being that foolish.

OT but this was one of the gripes a friend and I had about the jewels in Downton Abbey - far too modest and obviously paste. Pre WW1 and after aristocratic and royal women draped themselves in jewels as a signifier of status and the blingier the better (look at any picture of Queen Mary). I think it's Anne de Courcy in her book about the social scene before WW2 who says that when someone walked into a social event where tiaras were worn the light of the jewels was blinding.

Salemforcuddles · 07/04/2024 17:27

If I had one of those tiaras would just spend all day admiring myself

IsoldeWagner · 07/04/2024 17:31

Have a look at Diana's tiara (the Spencer one) as she enters St Paul's Cathedral on her wedding day. It flashes and looks like it's on fire!

Salemforcuddles · 07/04/2024 17:43

I best have that one

Pryddan

Yes - thank you - this thread has restored my faith in MN with so many excellent posts - the voices of sanity.

I'm always dismayed at the fawning over Meghan. To me, she gives off strong 'mean girl' vibes - and I just cannot believe that others don't see her this way. The actressy fakeness and self-regarding aura really puts me off. Isn't this obvious to everyone? Whereas Catherine strikes me as doing her job in a dignified way - not fake, just very professional - someone who's been humble enough to have willingly learned what's required of her. There's a real difference and that's one of the areas where people tend to divide into tribes - if you fall for like that gushing actressy, hair-tossing stuff and mistake being an enthusiastic 'hugger' for being a warm human being, then you'll like Meghan and good luck to you!). If you're a bit of a reserved and sceptical introvert with considerable life experience, it doesn't wash quite so well.
