Anyone watching this?
I've just put it on.

I'll rephrase: the Queen sanctioned the payment of many millions to Andrew's accuser to buy Andrew out of a situation which was going to end terribly for him and for the royal family in general. The legal fees would have been eye watering. It's almost a side issue whose account the money came out of - nothing was done without the Queen's approval.

ThePoshUns · 08/04/2024 19:37

I thought it was dull as ditchwater. Didn't add anything to the interview that we didn't know already.
Media showing once more that pop will eat itself.

There was no need for the teddies on the bed scene 🐻🐻🐻🐻 😕 but I thought Rufus Sewell played a good Andrew.

The arrogance and stupidity of Andrew was not surprising as he seemed to be pleased with himself at the success of the interview. Until he was summoned by mummy and she took all his titles away.

What a tosser he is.

Andrew is well known for having teddies all over his bed though

Goddessonahighway · 08/04/2024 19:54

Was there something is there about Sam's character having to fight for her place at the table related to class? Or have I made up the class thing? Her accent sounded very posh to me though so I was a bit confused by that point. Don't flame me for bringing up class - I know it doesn't end well on here. Reminded me of the party gate programme on channel 4. No consequences for people in power basically.

Karolinska · 08/04/2024 20:11

Goddessonahighway there clearly was: Sam's mother referred to 'people like us'.

DewinDwl · 08/04/2024 21:53

I never actually watched the original interview as I was afraid I'd die of cringe... should I watch it before watching scoop??

I watched it a few days before.
Made me understand more.

Just watched Scoop. Didn’t like GA as Maitlis. Too stiff imo. Great acting from Rufus bringing Andrew character to life. Didn’t need bath scene. Loved Harry from The Windsors being Stuart!

Thought quite well done on the whole but nothing will beat watching the actual interview.

CoffeeCantata · 09/04/2024 11:39

It was absolutely rubbish. Just the media congratulating themselves.

Yes, I agree, Caterham and The Poshuns. If you can watch the actual interview, what is the point of watching impersonations? It must be some kind of back-slapping and self-glorification on behalf of Maitlis and her team.

With the added disadvantage that the extra 'backstage' bits will be pretty much made up or tidied up after the event to make the journalists seem extra clever. So I don't get it.

(Can't bear PA, just to be clear. I just smell meeja folk being smug.)

I suppose that it shows a few things we’ve read in the mainstream press but haven’t seen: Andrew’s delusion that the interview was a roaring success etc. It also brings the Andrew question back to the front pages, which is useful at a time when the family are trying to minimise the issue. I don’t think either of those were the motives behind making the piece though - the main purpose seems to be to expose the tensions within the production team.

NotTram · 14/04/2024 10:39

I enjoyed watching it.

TheShellBeach · 14/04/2024 13:06

I enjoyed it too. I thought it was very well done.

Finally watched this tonight and was gripped from the get go. I did see the Maggie Thatcher in Gillian Anderson a bit at the start; it's the way she would open her mouth.

I had no idea about the Sam McAllister link, so it was good that it was told from her angle.

What I didn't understand though, was PA's relationship with Amanda, his press secretary. It was almost like she had a crush on him and whilst trying to protect him, wanted the truth from him. Couldn't quite work her out tbh!

vincettenoir · 15/04/2024 08:32

@Meredusoleil I think she was so in awe of him she was certain he’s win everyone over with his charm.

chocmatcha · 17/04/2024 19:31

This was all pre covid. Hard to believe it was so long ago. I wish they'd told us what was in the nuclear photo that was taken on the day

I am saving myself for the Ruth Wilson and Michael Sheen version, A Very Royal Scandal, on Amazon. Both Gillian Anderson and Rufus Sewell give me the major ick.

Andrew himself gives me the major ick. Waste of space.

NoisySnail · 02/05/2024 01:24

I finally watched it this evening. I enjoyed it. It was interesting the photographer who had been filming young girls going in and out of Epstein's place for ages and no one cared. I hadn't realised that it was because the photographer was watching Epstein's place because it was so obviously dodgy, that he managed to get the photo of Epstein and Prince Andrew together in New York Central Park.

I also had not realised that Prince Andrew made a remark about Matliss wearing trousers.

Overall it was very watchable, although it is best watched if you have already seen the original interview.

LBFseBrom · 02/05/2024 02:40

I thought it was pretty good, quite balanced. The cast was great.

LBFseBrom · 02/05/2024 05:46

Just to add, I found it very interesting to learn how the TV people go about arranging such interviews, hard work and persistence obviously pays off. The insights into personalities involved too.. Though it was a dramatised documentary, it was said to be pretty accurate. Gillian Anderson as Emily Maitlis was superb as was Billie Piper.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 05/04/2024 19:00

It’s nothing new if you saw the original interview or have read about it. Rather flat I thought.

Gillian Anderson brought her Maggie thatcher voice with her from the crown which was quite distracting. Must think all English women sound like Mags.

I can't stand her doing that voice. Just see MT.

DriftingDora · 02/05/2024 09:16

Jf20 · 08/04/2024 12:49

That’s probably fair and what he does to be honest. Plus you’d not work closely for him unless you thought that as you’d not be able to hide it.

i genuinely believe he is absolutely guilty of the sex crimes he’s accused of, I think he simply thought though she fancied him and wanted to have sex with him due to who he was. Or that it was a treat for her. He’s that arrogant. But he probably didn’t care either way, it was about him and his wants. One of his body guards said he didn’t do drink, drugs, or smoking, but he did do sex.

How he was allowed to do the Matis interview is beyond me. He was never ever going to be able to achieve anything other than disgrace and make himself look even worse due to his character. Maybe the queen had to let it happen so she could take him out. Her communications secretary was there it seems so he’d have known what a car crash it was, and they still let it go out, then used it as the lever to get him out of public duty, before it deteriorated into a 12 million pay off.

so I think thr queen let it happen; either the public bought it and it was all good, or they didn’t and she’d use it to remove him from public duty.

This sounds plausible. I think it might have been a form of damage limitation in a way. Let's face it, a man of his age doesn't change, and his mother must surely have known that even if this scandal was smoothed over, like busses there would be another one along shortly - and the next one might be even worse. Being an arrogant fool he lacks any kind of judgment and self-awareness and was surely ripe for some other chancer with brains to come along and draw him into another disreputable activity, even after Epstein.

He's now presumably living at Royal Lodge and doing damn all like the useless article he is. It would be interesting to know how he fills up his time - I can't see him minding the grandkids or doing charity work somehow. Perhaps he's been given a final warning as a condition of remaining within the family - who knows?

I've just watched it recently. I thought it was very good, but Anderson doing the Thatcher voice annoyed me. She had the same voice in 'The Fall'. It must be her default for playing British characters. She looked very like Maitlis in the role. At times I forgot I was watching an actress. But the voice ruined it.

Billie Piper was very good, and it was nice to see the story told from 'behind the scenes'. I had thought Rufus was too handsome to play Andrew, but he portrayed the slimy and pathetic nature of his character really well.

Presumably the scenes of them walking into BP were CGI? I doubt they were given permission to film there!

NoisySnail · 02/05/2024 12:36

It was not a plot by the Queen to elbow Andrew out. The Royal Family keep trying to bring Andrew back but the public complain.
Queen Elizabeth did some rare reputational damage to herself through her gestures of public support for Andrew.

I think the Queen believed Andrew was innocent, so thought it was fine for him to say that publicly.

CombatBarbie · 02/05/2024 12:44

Watched it a few weeks ago..... It was interesting. But makes you think....
