Anyone watching this?
I've just put it on.

It’s nothing new if you saw the original interview or have read about it. Rather flat I thought.

Gillian Anderson brought her Maggie thatcher voice with her from the crown which was quite distracting. Must think all English women sound like Mags.

Isn't Gillian Anderson English?

Not according to Wikipedia, and other sources I found with a quick search.

Isn't it just a drama though, a bit like The Crown so the dialogue won't actually be true?

We watched it. It is written/based on an account, by the woman who was the Newsnight 'booker' and attended all the meetings and the interview. The interview is exactly as it was - it's astonishingly like it if slightly cropped.
I thought it was ok - you see how staggered the BBC were that the palace made no attempt to intervene/pressure them to pull it or edit it, and how absolutely unaware everyone at the palace seemed about how dreadful his performance was. It reminded me how totally removed from the reality of the situation he was- he simply lacked any awareness of the issues at play, the mood that existed about it, the victims of Epstein. He was really quite bizarre. Had no ability to 'read the room' at all.
Rufus Sewell is astonishingly accurate in his mannerisms and voice. Gillian Anderson does a decent job- but seemed a bit old for Emily Maitlis and I could hear her 'Margaret Thatcher' voice coming through. Billy Piper was good.

She is English. I'm English and she went to my school.

That's the first time I have watched the interview, my god

How confusing.

Edit: did you perhaps go to school in the US?

whatsitcalledwhen · 05/04/2024 23:59

@AprilBringsTheSweetSpringShowers

The first results if you search
'Gillian Anderson English' is:

It's because she is bidialetical, having spent her entire life living between the UK and the US. Gillian was born in Chicago in 1968 but she and her parents moved to North London soon after, where she stayed until she was 11-years-old. After no doubt adopting a natural London accent, Gillian moved back to the US

Hellendegenerate · 06/04/2024 00:04

There was no need for the teddies on the bed scene 🐻🐻🐻🐻 😕 but I thought Rufus Sewell played a good Andrew.

The arrogance and stupidity of Andrew was not surprising as he seemed to be pleased with himself at the success of the interview. Until he was summoned by mummy and she took all his titles away.

What a tosser he is.

gentlesea · 06/04/2024 00:08

Agree with PPs that Gillian Anderson's Thatcher voice is distracting. It's only when it gets to the interview that she ditches it and it's more normal so it's weird that she didn't keep it up for the rest of the film. Also weird that they made Emily seem so ridiculous swanning around with her dog everywhere.

On the whole it was decent. Thought Rufus/Andrew did I good job although I think we could all be spared the scene where he checks his phone after the interview!

Garlicked · 06/04/2024 02:44

The TEDDIES! That stunned me so much I had to check - I thought it must've been a bit of heavy-handed fictionalisation. But no. It's true! Right down to Andrew losing his rag if a teddy was put in the wrong place.

Was the Duke of York really obsessed with teddy bears?

So this Netflix one was written/produced by the real life Sam (Billie Piper’s character) and the Amazon one is being produced by Emily. So doubt we will hear Emily talk about this one much

Also I am sure I read that Sam and Emily ended up not speaking as Emily didn’t acknowledge that it was Sam that did the graft for many months to secure the interview in a tweet she put out or something like that

JADS · 06/04/2024 06:01

Sounds like a really interesting drama and I think it will be good to watch in contrast with the Amazon version. I'm particularly interested in how they got him to do it. After Charles and Diana being interviewed, how did he think it was a good idea?

Rufus Sewell played Charles II in the early 2000s, so is used to playing sexually deviant royals. Gillian Anderson seems a somewhat odd choice for Emily Maitlis, but she seems to have some sort of contract with Netfix to play posh British women of a certain age.

Overtheatlantic · 06/04/2024 06:16

It’s really not fair to lump Charles in with Andrew. He’s not sexually deviant.

billysboy · 06/04/2024 06:20

Pa is a nonce pure and simple with a staggering lack of self awareness
I will watch with interest

That poster said Rufus Sewell played Charles II not Charles III. ie the one from.the 1600s. I don't know about sexually deviant, but he did have loads of mistresses and illegitimate children.

JADS · 06/04/2024 07:49

Yes, sorry. Charles II from the 1600s not our current king. Charles II had loads of illigitimate children, I believe that both Princess Diana and Queen Camilla are descended from him.

Wickedlywearynamechange · 06/04/2024 09:33

I think SCOOP was really good. It was great watching it from the point of view of Sam McAlister who is not someone I had thought about much when it came to that interview, despite the documentary.

Billie Piper played that role really well I thought. She’s such a talent. They were all really good. Rufus Sewell played PA as entitled and oblivious to the feelings of those around him, and I didn’t have a problem with that. And Gillian Anderson and Keeley Hawes were both very good too.

I look forward to the Amazon version, from Emily Maitlis’ point of view. Ruth Wilson is always great to watch imo.

AutumnCrow · 06/04/2024 09:50

Does Beatrice have a role in it?

Blackcats7 · 06/04/2024 09:52

Thought it was very dull and added nothing to the original interview and other documentaries about andrew/epstein/maxwell

Briefly.

TheShellBeach · 06/04/2024 10:57

Well I thought it was excellent and that Rufus Sewell played Andrew very well.

It was grim seeing him from the back when he emerged from the bath though.

Probably better than seeing him from the front.

See this annoys me when production companies do this. I know that dramatic licence is used to pull in viewing figures but what happens is fact then becomes muddled with fiction.

BeaRF75 · 06/04/2024 11:39

I enjoyed it, and Rufus Sewell is fantastic (and it was quite a nuanced portrayal of Andrew).
Billie Piper was good, and I know it's based on the book written by her character, but I thought there was far too much of her - loads of shots of her gazing into the camera etc. And they overdid the fact that her background was different to all the middle class journos.
Still worth a watch, tho.

TheShellBeach · 06/04/2024 12:01

I thought GA was very good as Maitlis.

OP posts:
heathspeedwell · 06/04/2024 12:14

I thought it was really well done. Agree that GA was superb. And Rufus Sewell did a great job of portraying how Andrew is so completely arrogant and quite oblivious to the pain that he and Epstein caused to a huge number of young girls.

It's a shame that more wasn't made of the fact that it would have been impossible for Andrew not to know that Epstein was abusing multiple girls a day.

Witnesses including Virginia Roberts have said that Epstein showed off about getting 12 year old French triplets flown to his home as a 'birthday present'. Roberts herself was being abused by Epstein from when she was 15.

I wonder if the Amazon version will cover this aspect of what happened.
