In appreciation of Princess Anne

Princess Royal gives Gloucestershire history lesson to army officers

The Princess Royal educated senior army officers on "a very important bit of Gloucestershire history".

She had visited the army barracks to open new accommodation.

"The new officers' accommodation at the Imjin Barracks in Innsworth were named after Colonel James Calne.
Col Calne was the commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, The Gloucestershire Regiment during the Korean War in 1951."

"The princess reflected on a trip to Korea after asking if there was an explanation for the name of the block, to which she was told there was not."

Of course Princess Anne knew better, if not by virtue of a sharp memory then because she had done her homework before the visit.

"It seems very relevant to Gloucestershire, and I was at a reception the other day for Korean veterans," she said.
"Funnily enough, when I went to Korea the first time, they took me out to the Glosters' memorial.
"As it happens, I think it is much more relevant to go and see the territory and terrain that they had to fight in. It was horrendous.
"The temperature in winter… they said minus 40."

Those senior officers must have been very red faced, fancy being caught out having failed to brush up their history or even ascertain the reason for the choice of name for their new barracks!

Thought it was time to have a break from threads about you know what and have some simple appreciation for the chief workhorse of the Royal family.

I knew someone a few years ago who worked for Save the Children and he always said that if Anne was coming to visit you had to be one your toes as she was very very knowledgeable about all aspects of the SCF's work!

Naff off.

I’ve always thought that was a surprisingly polite way of telling those photographers what she’d like them to do!

I’ve always thought that was a surprisingly polite way of telling those photographers what she’d like them to do!

Apparently that isn't exactly what she said, the press were then unable to quote her more well known phrase! I'd never heard it before that incident.

She's a right legend

She’s very very sharp and knows her beans. Probably the hardest working Royal there is. I’ve met her a couple of times and she’s very charming and very very switched on.

She’s amazing… very hard working and down to earth.
I hope she knows how much she’s admired.

I actually like her husband a lot more having seen him on tv during the events prior and post our Queen's funeral. He seems like a very decent, low keyed, polite and respectful chap.

I have always thought she is a very hard worker.

Very much like her mother - duty first.

To watch her accompany her Mother on that journey from Scotland to England, to have to make polite conversation with the others that joined her from time to time in the vehicles when she may just have felt like weeping into her hankie.

I'm not generally in favour of the Royal Family but I have always admired how hard working Princess Anne is, how sharp she seems, her reputation for research (at least presumably reading the briefings her team do when she visits somewhere), and the fact she will often take less prestigious visits to more remote locations.

I remember reading about the kidnap attempt on her in the Mall and being astounded at her level headedness. She's an absolute legend, along with a couple of others.

It's a shame the BBC made errors of spelling (twice) in that piece when it accompanies the photo with the correct spelling.

She's fantastic. On a visit to a sewer system she togged up and went down for a tour. She visited a bin depot near me and drove one of the bin lorries. Again, both times very knowledgeable, very clued up.
The kidnap attempt is worth reading about. She's never taken on a victim mentality because of it, never felt sorry for herself.
I also like the fact that she's still wearing clothes from 1974....

I value Anne’s work ethic. Hardworking. No pretence. No drama.

A relative got an honour from Anne and was amazed that the two of them had a chat for several minutes, wherein Anne spoke knowledgeably about my relative's rather obscure area of work. I mean, she could have just brushed up on it beforehand, but how many hours of swotting would it have been to be able to chat like that with everyone?

She is a legend. It'll be a sad, sad day when she dies.

When her mother became Queen, she was 2nd in line to the throne. She's now 17th.
No complaints, she's just carved out a positive and productive role.

She really is very impressive.

Yeas ago, I was working on a project with an old established traveller site under a motorway junction, a dire location, and very noisy. Princess Anne had been to see the children there as part of Save the Children and she was great. There was no press coverage of the visit at all, but there was a lot of press coverage over another Royal's new hair style. It seemed so wrong.

Princess Anne is my favourite royal. Best qualities of both her parents, in my opinion. She is a huge asset to the Royal Family. I met her once at a Riding for the Disabled Centre. She was very down to earth, funny and knowledgeable.

I understand from ex colleagues she is very well respected by those who have worked with her. Kind but robust and no messing, very witty.
