Princess Royal gives Gloucestershire history lesson to army officers

The Princess Royal educated senior army officers on "a very important bit of Gloucestershire history".

She had visited the army barracks to open new accommodation.

"The new officers' accommodation at the Imjin Barracks in Innsworth were named after Colonel James Calne.
Col Calne was the commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, The Gloucestershire Regiment during the Korean War in 1951."

"The princess reflected on a trip to Korea after asking if there was an explanation for the name of the block, to which she was told there was not."

Of course Princess Anne knew better, if not by virtue of a sharp memory then because she had done her homework before the visit.

"It seems very relevant to Gloucestershire, and I was at a reception the other day for Korean veterans," she said.
"Funnily enough, when I went to Korea the first time, they took me out to the Glosters' memorial.
"As it happens, I think it is much more relevant to go and see the territory and terrain that they had to fight in. It was horrendous.
"The temperature in winter… they said minus 40."

Those senior officers must have been very red faced, fancy being caught out having failed to brush up their history or even ascertain the reason for the choice of name for their new barracks!

Thought it was time to have a break from threads about you know what and have some simple appreciation for the chief workhorse of the Royal family.

Nice thread op 👍

Yiayoula · 24/03/2024 13:42

She is a legend .

ButterCrackers · 24/03/2024 13:43

She gets on with things without fuss. Well done to her and family.

Yirk · 24/03/2024 13:46

Anne would have been brilliant as queen .

theduchessofspork · 24/03/2024 13:46

Dear god, this place is mental

CoffeeCantata · 24/03/2024 15:00

She is the BOSS!

Met her once at the opening of a centre for the charity I was working for. Everything her admirers say is true: simple, (frumpy!) country clothes, and not too new! Fully informed, chatted to everyone, stayed longer than arranged, nothing showy or starry about her - but genuinely interested and supportive.

Totally down to earth. Sorry - it may not be news, but she is very consistent and serious about what she does and we all appreciated it.

Dear god, this place is mental

I’m not a fan of the endless weird posts here, but I don’t see anything wrong with a reasonable post about Princess Anne on the Royal Family board.

DillDanding · 24/03/2024 15:09

She’s how all royals should be. No fuss. Gets on with it - and lots of it.

But I think at almost 74, no-one would care if she retired.

BrownSauceOnBeans · 24/03/2024 15:11

I am a republican, but Anne seems like the kind of person you could vote for as a president.

Also she wears clothes that she has had for 40 odd years. Fabulous.

Exasperateddonut · 24/03/2024 15:23

Very rare you see a thread about the royals and everyone is in agreement.

jeffgoldblum · 24/03/2024 15:35

Well there was that one post!

Sameratdifferenthat · 24/03/2024 15:45

I agree, she epitomises what the royals should be / do. She knows her duty and carries it out diligently, with good grace & without drama. I really admire her energy & dedication.

The plane carrying the late Queen & Anne from Balmoral to London, flew over our village & I thought quite long & hard (it was a huge, slow plane) about Anne and her long journey with her mother's body. Found it very emotional.

Maybe those senior officers were so busy doing actual work they didn't have time to brush up on history? I am sure that those senior army officers who worked extremely hard to get where they are today and have risked their life for their country didn't feel less of themselves when compared to an extremely privileged woman living a luxurious relaxed life who gets applause for doing the bare minimum.

I do like Anne, but I do always find it interesting that on threads and in comments about her the fact she is such a dreadful dog owner is often totally overlooked.

If any other royals had been convicted in court because their out of control dog bit two children it would get cast up at every turn. Especially when another of her dogs attacked and killed one of the Queen’s corgis shortly after.

Imo she’ll be like her mother and grandmother and never actually officially retire. She’ll be doing bits and pieces right up to the end

ajandjjmum · 24/03/2024 16:36

I love the way that she supports her brother.

VelmaVenkman · 24/03/2024 16:54

She was the patron of the charity I used to work for. That woman is formidable! Sharp, never needed briefing, never read from a script. If we needed to feed her, it was a spicy curry and black coffee from a mug. And she often drove herself if the venue was near Gatcombe!

fightingthedogforadonut · 24/03/2024 16:57

Not a Royalist by any means, but respect her work ethic and the fact that she is sharp as a tack.

heldinadream · 24/03/2024 17:15

I'm definitely not any kind of Royalist, but I thoroughly admire her and like a couple of people have said I would vote for her in a heartbeat. Bloody shame she's not Queen.

I love this. I’m definitely not a fan of the Royals but Anne has got it right. It’s what she does that counts and it has never been any other way.

princessannnerocks · 24/03/2024 18:44

In the 10 years I worked with the royals at a distance

I never heard one bad thing about Princess Anne

Hardworking respect and polite and her husband is also very down to earth and polite

Carole Middleton on the other hand ....

I suppose you have never got anything wrong in your life then....

Maybe unfurling yourself from your anus would be an idea?

themessygarden · 24/03/2024 19:52

She is a legend, her response to the kidnapping attempt was incredible, I only recently realised she was just 23 years old at the time, talk about courage and resilience. I also really enjoyed her on the rugby podcast, would love to see more casual interviews with her.

BuyingTheHills · 24/03/2024 20:04

I wasn’t impressed with her comments on the RF links to slavery which she made in an interview not so long ago.
