In appreciation of Princess Anne

Princess Royal gives Gloucestershire history lesson to army officers

The Princess Royal educated senior army officers on "a very important bit of Gloucestershire history".

She had visited the army barracks to open new accommodation.

"The new officers' accommodation at the Imjin Barracks in Innsworth were named after Colonel James Calne.
Col Calne was the commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, The Gloucestershire Regiment during the Korean War in 1951."

"The princess reflected on a trip to Korea after asking if there was an explanation for the name of the block, to which she was told there was not."

Of course Princess Anne knew better, if not by virtue of a sharp memory then because she had done her homework before the visit.

"It seems very relevant to Gloucestershire, and I was at a reception the other day for Korean veterans," she said.
"Funnily enough, when I went to Korea the first time, they took me out to the Glosters' memorial.
"As it happens, I think it is much more relevant to go and see the territory and terrain that they had to fight in. It was horrendous.
"The temperature in winter… they said minus 40."

Those senior officers must have been very red faced, fancy being caught out having failed to brush up their history or even ascertain the reason for the choice of name for their new barracks!

Thought it was time to have a break from threads about you know what and have some simple appreciation for the chief workhorse of the Royal family.

It’s just a rather lame derail. The Princess Royal has done loads and loads of good things but someone wants to bleat about a a dog attack on children over two decades ago where the dog was described by a professional as “placid”.

Yes - pathetically lame and desperate.

punintended · 25/03/2024 12:30

My friend who is very involved with Riding for the Disabled is very impressed with Anne when she visits. So knowledgeable and interested.

To be fair to Charles though, another friend who is definitely not a royalist met him a few years ago at a function and was equally impressed. He was very thoroughly prepared and able to have proper conversations with all those present about their work.

This is the royal family topic !
Are you aware???
Do you go on the gardening topic and tell them not to post and to get a hobby?!

The royal family topic is for all chat about the Royal family. The RF aren’t comparable with gardening. It’s the people who only want the good talked about that are “telling other posters not to post.” It’s interesting for me to hear about it all.

jeffgoldblum · 25/03/2024 17:44

??
Are you the poster who told us to stop talking and get a hobby?

jeffgoldblum · 25/03/2024 17:45

As I don't understand why you're tagging me and replying to a post that has nothing to do with your reply!

I thought you were another poster complaining about the “derail’ with posters talking about the dog attacks and slavery comments. I can now see your were talking to one poster in particular. You hadn’t tagged them and I didn’t read their comment so made a mistake. Apologies.

No worries 👍@MakeALeft

The best of a bad bunch gets hero status it seems.

This sums it up and no-one's yet touched on the multiple speeding offences.

She wasn't dubbed 'Her Royal Rudeness' for nothing either.

Wasn’t she called her royal rudeness for telling photographers to go away? Can’t blame her for that, they are very intrusive and I’m sure putting up with them day after day wears you down. Celebs have ended up punching them so Anne was very restrained.

The speeding and dog attacks are bad though. There’s no excuse and they happened more than once. It’s entitled behaviour for any other Royal it would not be so easily forgiven and forgotten.

quantumbutterfly · 26/03/2024 07:38

The law was applied to her then.. how many other royals would even allow that? They do everything they can to avoid being called to legal process.

cordeliachaseatemyhandbag · 26/03/2024 07:40

I'm a republican but if we have to keep the monarchy I'd much rather Anne was next in line.

I don't know much about Peter Phillips but I think I'd rather him or Zara than William or Harry.

DuchessOfPort · 26/03/2024 07:53

I’ve enjoyed the bold bit.

“She said she had been on her way to an official engagement when she was caught in a line of slow-moving traffic on the A417 dual carriageway near Brockworth.
She said she had pulled out and accelerated to a clear part of the road so the officers could see her.
When a police car pulled out behind her and flashed its blue light, Princess Anne said she thought this was a sign acknowledging that the car was following her and carried on speeding.
The chairman of the bench, Graham Sacker, said: "We have taken into account Her Royal Highness's immediate guilty plea.
"This was an offence of average seriousness by a person of high means."
He added that the princess's clean driving licence had also been taken into account when considering a penalty.
A spokeswoman for Buckingham Palace said the princess accepted that she was subject to the normal rule of law. She will be paying her fine accordingly.”

I’ve been done for speeding twice - not in my Bentley or at 90, a much lamer 38MPH in a 30, but if I only get done twice more in the next 30 years, I’ll be ok with it.

Agreed. Not sure if it's nature or nurture that's made Anne what she is but she's a better bet than Charlie or Andy. And this is what's wrong with hereditary power.

I think the thing is though - if Anne was the heir, or the spare, would she be as she is now?

Peter and Zara would have had totally different lives if Peter was in William’s shoes.

i suspect if Anne was Queen and Peter PoW there’s a strong chance there would be threads online debating if Charles/Edward and William/Louise would actually be better.

What a strange attitude. Its easier to just watch your speed. The outcome of accidents at 30 are much better than at 40, so you might be ok with it, but you stand a higher chance of causing serious injury or death to someone else. As long as you’re ok with it though. 🤨 🤯

Great to see Anne in the Highlands yesterday supporting the Scottish wildcats!

That's a nice story.

Makes a change from shooting Scottish wildlife I suppose...

Not all of us are perfect!

You hardly have to be perfect to not think ‘I’ll speed and be done for it multiple times and be ok with it’. 🤪 The measures some will go to in order to justify Anne speeding multiple times and putting others at risk is incredible.

ajandjjmum · 29/03/2024 07:29

As I said, not all of us are perfect. 25,000 miles a year on average and 40+ years of driving, I don't think a couple of speeding tickets are a hanging offence. Not justification, just acceptance that I'm not perfect - and on that basis, it seems unfair to expect perfection of anyone else.

Have you never made a mistake or misjudgment? Easter Grin

I just find it strange to sort of be resigned to it happening to the point you say ‘if I only get done twice more in the next 30 years, I’ll be ok with it.’.

The fact that you were saying it to justify Anne’s speeding is also strange to me, I can see someone acting so defensive for their loved ones, but not a random person.

I’ve made plenty of mistakes, but I wouldn’t be so blasé about any that endanger lives. I find that attitude hard to stomach. I don’t expect perfection, I know good people who have been done for speeding, none have been so casual about it as you though.

DuchessOfPort · 29/03/2024 15:20

Pfff. Have you never ever accidentally drifted over the speed limit? I don’t do it deliberately but it happens. I definitely sometimes do over 70mph in the fast lane when overtaking. It frees up the lane. And my GOD do some people - in fact many people - go over 90 on a motorway.

I just think as someone who doesn’t get to retire, has done a lot of good with the work that she’s been allowed to do, and does it well, that a few speeding tickets in four or five decades is not that bad as crimes go.

It’s great that you never speed. Best not to. But on balance, I think that despite a very few traffic violations, Princess Anne has done considerably more good than bad.
