The royal family

In appreciation of Princess Anne

Princess Royal gives Gloucestershire history lesson to army officers

The Princess Royal educated senior army officers on "a very important bit of Gloucestershire history".

She had visited the army barracks to open new accommodation.

"The new officers' accommodation at the Imjin Barracks in Innsworth were named after Colonel James Calne.
Col Calne was the commanding officer of the 1st Battalion, The Gloucestershire Regiment during the Korean War in 1951."

"The princess reflected on a trip to Korea after asking if there was an explanation for the name of the block, to which she was told there was not."

Of course Princess Anne knew better, if not by virtue of a sharp memory then because she had done her homework before the visit.

"It seems very relevant to Gloucestershire, and I was at a reception the other day for Korean veterans," she said.
"Funnily enough, when I went to Korea the first time, they took me out to the Glosters' memorial.
"As it happens, I think it is much more relevant to go and see the territory and terrain that they had to fight in. It was horrendous.
"The temperature in winter… they said minus 40."

Those senior officers must have been very red faced, fancy being caught out having failed to brush up their history or even ascertain the reason for the choice of name for their new barracks!

Thought it was time to have a break from threads about you know what and have some simple appreciation for the chief workhorse of the Royal family.

Perhaps the fact that these incidents were over 20 years ago suggests they were isolated ones? Princess Anne must have countless dogs over the years!

It’s 2 too many, and possibly 3 if the 2022 attack is true. I have had numerous dogs over the years, one have ever attacked a human or animal. They are not out of control. Please don’t minimising it.

TakeTheTime · 24/03/2024 22:09

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 24/03/2024 21:54

It wasn’t the same dog. The dogs were mother and daughter.

The reports I read said it was. Either way, it’s irresponsible ownership to have out of control dogs.

What do you want her to do then? She can't change what happened! I am not minimising anything. One of the (several) reasons I have never had a dog is because an attack is always a possibility.

The OP started the thread as something more light-hearted, and an appreciation of the good work Princess Anne does and her good qualities.

If that poster had wanted to have a discussion about her dogs, she should have started her own thread about it. I just don't think that was necessary here. I think it was mean-spirited and nasty.

quantumbutterfly · 24/03/2024 22:14

Ok. Would still prefer her over charlie....if I had a vote. She's seems brighter, stronger, more effective.

It would be good if she could be in control of her dogs maybe, don’t you think?

I don’t like the fact that people are trying to close down discussion about it. You don’t get to have an echo chamber, with everyone licking Anne’s arse, on a public forum I’m afraid.

DuchessOfPort · 24/03/2024 22:23

It’s just a rather lame derail. The Princess Royal has done loads and loads of good things but someone wants to bleat about a a dog attack on children over two decades ago where the dog was described by a professional as “placid”.

Anything to make sure we don’t keep the focus on the many many many hundreds of good causes she has brought attention to (the RDA is so wonderful for so many children - more even than the 2 that she didn’t actually injure with her dog) or the fact she is a Nobel Peace Prize nominee. No. Let’s be all Mumsnet and whine about a dog incident over twenty years ago and screw Save the Children!

You want an echo chamber, you won’t get that on a forum. Her work has been acknowledged, what’s the problem with other things being mentioned? Why are you so keen to shut people up?

I don't want to "shut [anyone] up" as you so elegantly put it.

I dislike the deliberate derailment of threads.

Runnerinthenight · 24/03/2024 22:29

I don't know why you needed to say that twice, we heard you the first time.

And last I heard, one can object to posts on fora than one disagrees with.

You see it as deliberate derailment. In reality it’s discussion. When you discuss peoples good points, the bad points inevitably come up.

I made the point twice to 2 different people who both seemed to want to control what is said on the thread. I’m allowed to, even if you don’t like it.

Runnerinthenight · 24/03/2024 22:39

I'm also allowed to. You don't get to police me. The OP makes it very plain what their thread was supposed to be about.

DuchessOfPort · 24/03/2024 22:44

Anyone can say whatever they like, but to come up with the lamest reason to criticise a woman who has spent 40 if not 50 years of her life highlighting the good that other people do, and doing a job that many people would find tricky - being close to the throne but not the heir, which is apparently not that east (Princess Margaret didn’t do this job as well as she perhaps could have) - being unable to live a completely normal life as a young woman but not whining about it, going through a kidnapping attempt by an armed man (but just Not Having It), and just cracking on with life in the public eye… YOU think a “placid” EBT in the noughties that hurt no one is the focus. And I don’t.

As you say. It’s a discussion forum. I like Fergie too. Pick the bones out of THAT one!

quantumbutterfly · 24/03/2024 22:45

If only we could vote for our 'head of state'. You'll never please everybody but I'd rather have Anne than Charlie.

Then again, if we'd never had royals, would we have heard of her?

Maybe a compromise with royalists would be to choose our favourite royal to represent us.

ARichtGoodDram · 24/03/2024 22:50

Given that @YetMoreNewBeginnings is always defending the royals and their (made up) protocols I doubt they were slagging off Anne and actually meant the interesting bit!

I completely agree with you.

Anne has been doing Royal duties since she was 18, without complaint, and from all accounts she's very good at what she does. I think she deserves credit for that.

I've liked her since she did some work with Blue Peter's Valerie Singleton in I think it was Kenya - it's a long time ago - with Save the Children. I still have the lovely glossy souvenir of their trip somewhere. No idea how I came by it!

The OP made a thread praising Anne, it’s to be expected that stories, both positive and negative are discussed. If people want full editorial control, they should start their own blog, not use a public forum. Opinions on Anne and the rest of the Royals will differ. 👍

EvelynBeatrice · 24/03/2024 22:56

She hasn't always been popular or as respected as she is now. It seems to me that she is the absolute embodiment of the 'keep your mouth shut and just get on with the job best you can without worrying about what the papers say about you' approach. She's earned the respect, and in many cases affection, of the British people by being genuine, hard working and sensible. A safe princess model for any aspiring princess!

Ok if you say so. You are clearly the top dog. In your own opinion.

MakeALeft · 25/03/2024 01:57

I wasn’t impressed with her comments on the RF links to slavery which she made in an interview not so long ago.

I remember that. I wasn’t impressed either. Then she tried to deflect by talking about modern slavery. 🙄

MakeALeft · 25/03/2024 02:10

I’m not from the UK and hadn’t heard about her dogs attacking children and other dogs. She gets a lot of good press so it’s interesting to read other things.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 25/03/2024 08:07

Will you lot just find hobbies? It's never ending.

jeffgoldblum · 25/03/2024 08:15

This is the royal family topic !
Are you aware???
Do you go on the gardening topic and tell them not to post and to get a hobby?!

FlatWhiteLover · 25/03/2024 08:36

Anne has slogged away at the unglamorous engagements such as opening classrooms / heath wards, visiting care homes etc for several decades without complaint or the glitz and glam. Go look at the court circular, Anne and Edward/Sophie are holding fort, vast majority of engagements in recent weeks have been undertaken by them whilst understandably the other royals are taking breaks.
