there was a massive deluge of new names posting the most outrageous and ridiculous stuff,

Agree. I gave up on those threads. They were too fast moving and driven by multiples of names I'd never seen before.

Not suspicious at all...

StickyWickets · 31/03/2024 11:43

I dabbled with them a couple of times but it was no fun really. Very little intelligence and zero wit, wasn’t worth the effort

AliceOlive · 31/03/2024 11:44

Very odd experience! I have seen it get quiet here before but not in the same way.

And no one on Mumsnet ever mentions the polo pony who dropped dead of a heart attack at the end of the match. The second one that got Harry investigated for animal cruelty. The endangered raptors shot down over a royal estate mentioned in a few Guardian articles.

I do.

I've posted links to the supposedly 'humane' spurs allowed in Polo too.

Oh and I forgot the water buffalo shot by Harold in a big game hunt.

The one whose body he's pictured gurning over 😡

I mention that fairly regularly too.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 31/03/2024 12:02

It's very hard to say anything without sounding like a troll hunter. But those early threads when Catherine first announced her absence due to surgery were astonishing in their viscousness and I really didn't think human beings could be that revolting. Turns out maybe they weren't human.

I didn’t know about the pony 😥, I love horses.

This seems to have been smoothed over in the papers though. It is all about how sad Prince W and Prince H was after the death, nothing about whether this was due to a condition of the horse which should have been picked up on.

When searching for this I also saw a picture of Prince H riding a horse which had a bloody side after his use of spurs. That is almost worse I think. I would assume heart attacks happens, in animals as in people? But I don’t like the use of spurs ☹️.

Agree.
Given the extensive traffic over the last few weeks (and the nature of those posts) the sudden quiet on the board is odd.

IcedPurple · 31/03/2024 12:35

I suspect the name change facility was creaking under the strain last weekend.

Wasn't the horse that died pregnant? And Harry had been advised not to ride her?

AliceOlive · 31/03/2024 12:46

@StormzyinaTCup odd and peaceful after weeks of turmoil.

StormzyinaTCup · 31/03/2024 12:54

@AliceOlive I’m enjoying the calm ☺️

I haven’t seen anything on that, do you have a source? I just saw that polo can be strenuous for horses (which I sort of am ok with).

I don’t like the spurs though. If you cannot make the horse do what you want without them, you need to practice more to become a better rider and/or work better with the horse. The answer is not to hurt the horse (in my opinion).

I suspect a large number of posters were journalists drumming up a frenzy. I've seen it on the style and beauty page too - unheard of companies suddenly getting a mass of "try this it's lovely" style posts from new and unknown posters ... 75% of mumsnetters probably have a commercial interest in posting these days. The royal threads are no different.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 31/03/2024 17:12

Journalists drumming up a frenzy for what? Journalists from where? Most of the anti Catherine posts are vehemently anti tabloid, anti Murdoch, anti DM, anti Mirror group.

Who knows. But many of the posts from the announcement day started in AIBU and Chat and other corners of the site before landing here.

I'm still not sure why it follows that these posts would have been generated by journalists.

Ratsoffasinkingsauage · 31/03/2024 18:05

@LadyChatterjee

I tried making that point at the time to some poster- the vitriol was always going to but then in the bum eventually. But they were enjoying themselves too much.

Or maybe people are.on holiday, enjoying going out now the weather is getting better, or stopped posting if their comment doesn't follow the status quo to avoid being accused of being part of the Sussex squad, told your standards are low, have no morals, derailing a thread and so on.

Plenty of reasons.

I agree that some may be away etc, but I think the point is that there were so
many posters who were completely new to the board who felt the need to post lurid speculation about where the Princess was and why. They have not hung around since the Princess revealed her cancer diagnosis

Asurvivor · 01/04/2024 11:40

I’m not sure its worth the risk of putting my head above the parapet, but I was reading these threads much more when there was a lot of speculation, mainly because there was so much speculation. I made one post where I said William has a problem to resolve in what the future of the UK monarchy will be. I made it because there were lots of comments about his workload, where he seems to be taking on a few key projects and not doing the day in day out grind work meeting many people on small engagements that Anne does (as do the other older members of the royal family).

I would say that I’m a mild anti-monarchist-in-its-current-form, I think it needs to transform to a European style monarchy with less intrusion into their lives but also less influence and less state money to survive/thrive. I think the issue of the monarchy’s future isn’t going to go away but it doesn’t seem appropriate to post about it right now. There seemed to be quite a few posters with similar viewpoints, so maybe that is why the board has gone quiet as I don’t think we were all bots!

Hi all,
Just swinging by to remind everyone that we at MNHQ are tiring of the factionalism on display on this particular board and fast coming to the conclusion that some posters are here for the fighting rather than, yanno, the discussion boarding?
The MNHQ team is here to try to keep the boards enjoyable and useful for everyone, not to intervene in spats, so we'd really like it if on this public holiday and, well, for however long we all have left together on this increasingly bedraggled planet, everyone could help out with that?
Thanks, really, it's much appreciated, we do know it's a small minority, and we hope the Easter Bunny was so good to you that we're all on day two of chocolate for breakfast. Have a totally lovely day. 🐰🐰🐰
