Let them deal with it in private.

This. The faux naive ‘I don’t understand why anyone is interested…’ is laughable. She’s our future Queen and Princess of Wales - she’s taken on a very prominent constitutional role and I’m sure she’s well aware this naturally means the public will be interested, even if others can’t seem to wrap their head around it.

Yes there has been some very cruel speculation but I saw an equal number of posts by people either just mildly curious or quite concerned about her - all to be expected when somebody in such a position retreats from the spotlight for quite a long time with scant explanation.

I don’t think she was forced to do the video address, it was inevitable - she isn’t going to return as they said after Easter, she will likely be out of action for months if not a year, and that was always going to need clarifying.

I think a lot of the outrage is phoney, by people who love to ‘be on the right side’ and feel lime 5* better people than everyone else. Willing to bet most of them were also pretty curious as to what was going on.

Wish her all the best in her recovery but those of you foaming at the mouth about the speculation are either shockingly naive or very disingenuous.

I agree with this.

The Royal Family relies on the general public having a parasocial relationship with them. It is essential to their existence and why people line the streets during a Royal wedding and celebrate jubilees with them. People feel like they have a connection with the individuals in the Royal Family and that they know them to some extent.

It is therefore completely natural that people will be curious and concerned when something is clearly wrong with a beloved member. I don't know why the current narrative is that the speculation was coming from a bad place when I actually think there was a lot of genuine concern and worry both for Kate but also the children. Of course this was mixed with unkind speculation and scandal but after the whole Harry and Meghan saga I think it's fair to suggest that the public thought there this was likely to be a similar drama rather than a serious health concern.

Very well put.

I think what we have witnessed is a variant of the paradoxical Streisand effect - by making such a concerted effort to preserve privacy, things overshot into raising awareness and speculation.

King Charles spoke openly and was seen manfully waving from his car regularly. Nobody was interested. The world was talking about Kate and the putative secret situation.

It’s natural to toilet yourself outside, too.

Twice this week I looked at the newspaper headlines in the supermarket. I can't remember what the words were, but neither Vanessa Someone nor Julie Someone were leaving her alone. No, I didn't buy the papers, nor did I click on them on line. I just thought, 'Spare us!'.

It's natural to be concerned its not natural to accuse her husband of murder and go on a rampage trying to figure out of Charles abdicated William became king would that stop prosecution?

Thats too far everyone went nuts

Did anyone actually say this on MN? My dd mentioned that she had seen this on TikTok.

I don’t find using “human nature” as an excuse for bad behavior remotely mature.

The death rumours were repeated as well as the whole "we know he has a temper Harry said he did" but it was deleted "not in the spirit"

BemusedAmerican · 31/03/2024 02:49

The comments on the various threads were so bad that I stopped lurking and started commenting since it almost sounded like bots.

We almost never saw Melania Trump when she was First Lady. We never saw Baron Trump, Trump's youngest son. Yet no one ever accused Trump of beating Melania, locking her up, killing her the way they did to William, who has much less of a temper.

And no one on Mumsnet ever mentions the polo pony who dropped dead of a heart attack at the end of the match. The second one that got Harry investigated for animal cruelty. The endangered raptors shot down over a royal estate mentioned in a few Guardian articles. It's human nature to wonder about the different standards applied to the two princes.

Same here. It was disgusting and so obvious what was happening.

themessygarden · 31/03/2024 10:23

I was absolutely sure it was bots posting, as there was a massive deluge of new names posting the most outrageous and ridiculous stuff, but the one or two that I reported as suspected bots were not and were long term posters.

@Mylovelygreendress I was thinking that exact thought yesterday. A huge difference from the week before Princess Catherine made her video.

I do.

I've posted links to the supposedly 'humane' spurs allowed in Polo too.
