There's lots of speculation from some sources, some unhinged, some less so.

OP posts:

I though Rishi is thought to be looking at Autumn general election and by law A UK general election has to be held by 28 January 2025. I would have thought that was why it was being discussed on a political show - rules around when and who gets to call one.

If you lose a monarch before then - we know whose next - and I'd have thought we'd rush though any legal stuff so we could get new Parliament.

The PM has right to ask for an election and King can technically say no - which is what the link is talking about nothing about a monarch death affecting elections.

Topseyt123 · 18/03/2024 13:01

In addition to my last post on here, does anyone seriously believe that Charles could have died and William immediately become King (which is what would have happened with a hereditary monarchy) in secret?

Are people really that utterly thick? Obviously some of them are!!

The King (Charles) has been seen meeting Rishi Sunak at Buckingham Palace and has let it be known that he hopes to attend the Trooping the Colour, perhaps in a horse drawn carriage rather than on horseback. He couldn't do that if he was dead!

Honestly, this bullshit is just laughable. You actually have to laugh at it and how fruitloops believe it.

He's alive. I just bumped in to him at Swansea Marina and took a photo.

@RhubarbGingerJam I don't think an election could be called around the whole state funeral and accession process?
I'm not suggesting the king has died but perhaps needs more time to fully recover, or there's some doubt. It certainly would be better to call a GE when he's fit for the state opening of a new parliament and all the duties that brings.
I was extremely surprised to see this discussion on Politics Live!
I have no idea why the RF aren't getting some factual information and pictures out there. It's bonkers.

They are not getting “factual information “ out because you can’t keep countering crack pot claims all the time. It would be never ending

I've not heard that - the next in line does instantly become Monarch - though there is legal stuff like proclamation and Accession Council things that do have to happen.

I can see why they'd want to not change government and head of state at same time - but parliament has it's own deadlines to call elections by. They try to avoid winter usually and Nov may be out as other countries like US are in change - but against that the party in power politics in our system get to ask when and they balance up their own chances, deadline and wider political concerns.

I suspect this is more about media thinking Rishi was going for May general election and now it looks unlikely due to dire polls - and nothing at all to do with the King health.

They were hoping budget would shift the polls even slightly but it hasn't worked - so thought they are going to hang on to bitter end in hope something happens to shift polls to less catastrophic for them in the remaining time.

roastedrapidly · 18/03/2024 13:35

If Charles was dead, William would become king immediately, a state funeral would need to be planned...I doubt William's first priority would be popping out to the local farm shop with Kate.

He's in hiding because Harry keeps asking for his jam recipes.

Redglitter · 18/03/2024 15:19

@NotOverYouOcelot I can only assume this is your rather poor attempt at being funny (btw you failed) because surely noone would actually believe the King could die & it wouldn't be all over the news

As for the 'super injuction' crap that started with some idiot American Tik Toker who has 2 reliable sources who told her on Fri that the BBC had been put on standby by the RF ready for a huge announcement in the next 24 hours Its been pointed out to her & the idiots who reposted it that thafs not how it works
When nothing happened the standby was miraculously increased to Sunday then the next few days & now Wednesday

I suppose though if she keeps using these tactics and extending this standby period she'll be right eventually..

This whole situation with PoW really has brought out the worst in SM. There are some absolutely deranged American posters. Ironic when you look at the shitstorm heading their way with the elections

Vespanest · 18/03/2024 15:49

In a more serious note, how scary is the amount of propaganda being used in social media and the belief that it attracts.

ArcaneWireless · 18/03/2024 16:00

Quite vespanest

Just because you see it in black and white doesn’t mean it is true. Yet some will fight their corner all day long on the fumes of ‘well, it was on Twitter’.

It doesn’t have to be skeevy propaganda either. Someone off their chomp on Buckfast or cannabis at 0200 can have their musings touted as fact by 0630.

RockyandBullwinkle · 18/03/2024 18:35

Scary that people would actually believe what they read on SM without question.

The British embassy in Moscow was today forced to give an official statement confirming King Charles IIIis still alive after Russian media claimed he had died.
A host of Russian news sites and their associated social media accounts reported earlier today that the King had died aged 75 as a result of cancercomplications, citing unnamed 'media' sources in an inexplicable stream of posts.
It came as an image of a clearly fake statement from 'Buckingham Palace' reporting Charles' 'unexpected death' was circulated on social media.
'King Charles III of Great Britain has died at the age of 75, according to media reports,' Russian newswire Sputnik reported.

And MNHQ have let the thread stand!!

The lunatics really have taken over the asylum.

hobocock · 18/03/2024 19:00

I came on here just to see if there was a "Is Charles dead?" thread and lo and behold, here we are.

Of course he isn't bloody dead. If he had died there would have been an announcement and the BBC would be wall to wall coverage. They aren't going to cover up his death FFS.
It was the same story with the late Queen. Years of "Is the Queen dead?" and a friend of a friend who is in the army said they've been put on standby for the funeral and are practising drill for it.

Why on earth do people think the RF would cover up a member of the family dying? Same with the whole Kate thing. If she had died they would just make an announcement, then get on with organizing the funeral.

They obviously need the clicks. All this rubbish must be like Christmas for social media sites.

It doesn't break talk guidelines is what I got back, after reporting the thread.

I am quite amused with the pisstake posts though - they are helping to at least make a point.

Ate too much cheese 🧀 😂😂😂

I worry sometimes about what doesn't break talk guidelines, and what does tbh!
