Imagine using the victims of a school shooting for attention and PR. There seem to be no depths to which this pair will not sink

Meghan and Harry sing happy birthday to school shooting victim family

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle make a surprise visit to Uvalde, Texas, to support the family of Irma Garcia, a teacher killed in the 2022 school shooting.

I have never been on holiday and had God Save the Queen played for me. (Or King, now.) Perhaps this happens for others such as LumiB?

you replied:

It is the British National Anthem not the Monarch's private one.

Now you say:

It would appear at first sight many Nigerians seem to respect the principle of heridtary monarchy and royal blood so as the son of a living King, Harry seems to have inherited some of this mystical royal pixie dust. Weird I know, but then the whole thing is in my mind anyway.

So are you saying that the Nigerians were playing "God Save the King" because they think Harry is royal? Not because he's British?

How would I know that without asking those that organised it. It may well be a combination of all those things and probably politeness and being welcoming. Since they didn't play the Star Spangled Banner one does tend to think it was for Harry. Had they done so I think we could have had 40 pages of affront and outrage and general mockery and I would have probably joined in myself ! As an aside it's interesting that we don't have a Royal Anthem some countries do , Thailand comes to mind and it's a particuarly nice one (the music not the monarch - now he really is a bad one of the highest order).King Charles can but dream of such power and wealth and treeible legal jeopardy of any who dare to criticise. Harry would probably be dead now if he was born there !

H&M were not on a royal tour though. It was a personal one. This keeps on being repeated. So there was no need to play God Save The King.

And if it was to respect the principle of hereditary monarchy, then why didn’t H or M appear to sing? I don’t expect her to of course. It would spoil the expression she’s worked so hard on. But as a veteran, he should and has on several occasions now chosen not to.

Fuck all respect there I’d say.

Well I'm guessing they didn't initiate that and were blindsided by it being played. That being so they were embarassed and sat it out.

ArcaneWireless · 18/05/2024 12:17

Meghan was far from embarrassed looking at her expression.

It was very much a case of this.

Right hand. Middle finger. Go.

ArcaneWireless · 18/05/2024 12:18

And Harry knows the words to God Save the King, so being caught off guard is no excuse there I’m afraid.

ArcaneWireless · 18/05/2024 12:18

She of course, might have to Google the words. If she has managed to figure out how to Google all things royal yet.

BemusedAmerican · 18/05/2024 12:22

Yes, I suppose they couldn't play the "Star Spangled Banner" for a Nigerian princess even if she was born and raised in the US.

And this, as I've said before, is exactly why tours like this are a bad idea.

TheFirmBiscuit · 18/05/2024 12:25

4.40 - it wasn't sung by anyone and played with out the song. Apologies for GB News and Paul Burell before the clip no -one should have to suffer that. I'm not seeing that smirk either but the logo does cover her face.

When Beyonce writes her anthem which she may well do more axes will need to be sharpened !

BemusedAmerican · 18/05/2024 12:27

Perhaps Harry is tone-deaf and can't carry a tune. The Wales children are lucky to have a musical mother.

LaMarschallin · 18/05/2024 12:31

You wouldn't know. However, you pointed out that it's the British National Anthem not the Monarch's private one (my underlining).
MaturingCheeseball said that most British people don't have the anthem played for them and then you said Nigerians respected the principle of heridtary monarchy.

So either they were there as private British citizens or they were there as "royalty". You seem to have made both points.

I thought they were supposed to be there to represent Invictus which is international. Do you mean that the Nigerians thought they were there on a royal visit since you said:

I thought the palace had made it clear that it wasn't a royal visit.
Were the Nigerians misled?

I’d hazard a guess LaMarschallin

ArcaneWireless · 18/05/2024 12:40

Oh there is no doubt Harry is tone deaf.

Just not only in the musical sense.

It's truly a mess of misguided protocol and the fuzzy division between the state and a private individual that happens to also be the son of the King, and who still carries royal titles. There's no denying that , the ball of those that want to change that, if indeed they do , rather than just score points is pretty much in the Palace's Court (sic) though. If those lines of communciation don't open up and in a cordial way then this is the future. Love it or loathe it.

which made no sense at all.

BemusedAmerican · 18/05/2024 12:45

@TheFirmBiscuit Let's hope it's easier to sing than the Star Spangled Banner. Many singers have trouble with the top notes.

The interesting part of working with asylum seekers is that they are looking forward - housing, job, learning English, rather than looking back to where they came from. Despite the shitty conditions in the shelters.

All the men in my grandfather's family emigrated to the US. He always said that if he had stayed, he would have died young and never wanted to return to the country of his birth. He came to the US with nothing, could not speak English, and died a successful business owner with a large and loving family.

The people who succeed in the US are the ones who take advantage of being able to create a new life and who think outside the box. H and M seems to be building the box around themselves.

Sorry I'm trying to do 2 jobs at once and probably both badly.

There's no denying the ball is in the Palace's court. Those who seek change, if they're truly interested and not just posturing, must open clear and respectful channels of communication. This is the path forward, for better or worse.

LaMarschallin · 18/05/2024 13:04

At least posting on MN isn't particularly important. I just hope the other job you're doing isn't vital.
Is posting on MN your "job" then?

You can stand down Bouncy. If a new anthem is needed, we’ll ask Solange. Queen of the elevator. At least she knows reality.
