Part 4 of a nice, unproblematic thread to discuss some of the fab outfits from the Duchess of Sussex, and some of the many great causes she (and Harry) and Archewell supports.

That's not really the point I was addressing. Solely about the outfit, in response to the suggestion it was a bit much, my opinion is that for some children it would have added to the special memory of "the time the lady who looked like a princess read to me". And so I think it's an appropriate choice, whatever other factors may come into the visit.

I can see that. Floaty dress.

I am going to look for a top like that.

CoffeeCantata · 03/04/2024 13:37

Eye-rolling a bit about the way celebrities and royalty are now credited with 'recycling' when they wear an outfit more than once!

Blimey, some things in my wardrobe are 30+ years old.

I'm all for re-wearing and I think they should be given brownie points for doing this, and most certainly not criticised (I'm sure only the craziest fashionistas would complain).

Aaaw great book - here's Rosie with her cheese hat on keeping the snakes away ! 🐍 🐍

@musthorse the shaking bit made me nostalgic.

Do you remember Kodak putting out a funny statement about this?

I found this, but am sure the original is still out there somewhere.

*Don’t Shake Your Polaroid Pictures

Contrary to the message conveyed in the Outkast song “Hey Ya” (company policy prevents us from linking to it on YouTube), you shouldn’t shake your Polaroid pictures. Besides the fact that waving your just-shot, now-developing picture isn’t really beneficial, there’s also a slight possibility it might, in fact, harm your print if you “shake it—shake it” too vigorously. The structure of a Polaroid is a series of chemicals and dyes sandwiched between layers; if you shake your print, there is the off chance you might create unwanted bubbles or marks between some of the layers, causing flaws in the final image. So, rather than shaking, simply let your print fully develop face down or in dim light on a flat surface.*

I know... it's hilarious!

People keep reporting the book Meghan's reading. It's actually Rosie Revere, Engineer, which I recall buying a while back for my DD. It's part of a great series elevating ambitions particularly for girls and also for boys - scientists, illustrators, architects, teachers. My fave is Sofia Valdez, Future Prez...

Not surprised our feminist activist Meghan picked Rosie Revere to read to the kids.

Betcha Princess Lili will be reciting it her sleep soon, LOL!😆

BemusedAmerican · 03/04/2024 14:41

We do Polaroids of visiting kids at my job for a board. One coworker does visiting dog photos. We have the kids hold the photos and watch ( not the dogs).

ArcaneWireless · 03/04/2024 14:46

Our feminist? Nah.

Thanks for the info on the books I should grt some for my nephew who is growing up fast! I was thinking of stem related toys now but these books are also a good idea

pipsfromthefuture · 03/04/2024 15:16

Wow, I haven't seen a Polaroid in forever!

If that's one thing with advancing technology, it's that we lost things as well! I wonder how many people actually print out photos these days

It's very cute, I was reading (while waiting for this appt 🙄) and they also did some STEM related activities together, which is really nice.

Also this annual event has raised 10M since 2016? that's very impressive. I enjoy when people spotlight these causes, it allows for more people to be aware of them and increases attention and donations. It's Wonderful

I absolutely agree, the royal family should do more of this …

I don't think it's a competition. There's room for everyone.

Though there's questions about how much pressure is being put on the charitable sector to pick up what the public one has left behind.

Our feminist? Nah.

Edited

The feminist who has piggy backed on marrying a prince and then spent her life slagging off his family for money . Yes that one. The one who doesn’t earn any money in an actual job.

skullbabe · 03/04/2024 16:53

I suspect that’s exactly why Make March Matter filmed and released this video. Such a great idea from the staff re:Polaroids - we use Polaroids for New Year’s Eve with a message to our future selves of what we want to accomplish in the year. It’s cheap, fun and cute.

ArcaneWireless · 03/04/2024 17:03

Just like the Royal Family visits.

Yet many argue that that is not the case.

It is important whoever does it.

Although I would argue that it is also important to showcase the actual charity and not make it all about your own presence.

skullbabe · 03/04/2024 18:03

But the charity…..

Nevermind.

Hm, and many would argue these royal visits make it about their own presence and royal patronages are not beneficial. I believe there are actually a few empirical reports about it.

But heyho, only a few believe it's a competition, not about the charity or the children here 🤷

Good lord, what a narrow minded view of feminism. Quite shocking for a website like Mumsnet where plenty are stay-at-home parents... Wow.

And yet someone who is happy to fly in under the banner of a Royal visit is exempt from criticism - even though they actually chose not to be royal?

Only one has mentioned a competition.

There is no competition.

There cannot be.

She isn't a self sufficient independent woman is she? She's trading off her husband's status and name.
