Avocado mashed with some feta is nice on toast.

Speaking of stuff that monarchs bought, if you ca find a copy of Ian Mortimer's book The Fears of Henry IV, have a look at what Henry took when he went on crusade to Lithuania. Basically the ship was a floating sweetshop. No idea if he took cheese, though.

Fun fact - Henry IV is the only English king to have visited Jerusalem.

Did you catch Tudor Xmas feast on bcc a couple of years ago? It was fun watching them put together all the trimmings

Thank you. Psst, sometimes I have mashed avocado with vinaigrette on it and a poached egg on top, quite cheese-less. Before someone has me totally deleted let me say that next time I'll try cheese underneath the avocado.

Go for it 😁

I like in the ship's manifest there is a list of the food he took, including "a quantity of ale and wine".
I'm thinking converting the unbelievers wasn't his main aim.

I loved that programme! So interesting.

He wasn't slumming it, that was for sure.

King's Lynn Railway Station. Just a short drive to Anmer.

I tried avocado and cheese on toast and now I'd like to try cheese and mushrooms on toast. Whoever posted it, or knows, are any other ingredients required?

No just cheese and shrooms. I usually cook the shrooms in a little oil, put a
slice of Emmental on some buttered toast, and a slice on top of the shrooms inthe pan to melt, then lob those on top of the cheeses and toast. I cheat shamelessly and use pre sliced Emmental 🤪

RoyalIyRhubarb · 12/03/2024 17:01

Well, that pongcheese website is incredible - thank you for sharing!

For those in the U.K., Aldi is selling Long Clawson mature Stilton which is divine (it’s the cheese that I received as a gift over Christmas and which makes perfectly delectable soup) so I thoroughly recommend it. Stilton, pear and rocket salad is on the menu tonight 😋

Maireas · 12/03/2024 17:09

You see, Samuel Pepys had it right. Apart from when he tried to put both legs in one pant leg.

RoyalIyRhubarb · 12/03/2024 17:11

That’s a story I did not know @Maireas .

JaneJeffer · 12/03/2024 17:16

My favourite cheese story

Uricon2 · 12/03/2024 17:16

Thanks to this thread, I'm going to ask my brother for some Fen Farm Baron Bigod brie for Easter instead of an egg. He'll then probably want some too as he loves it but too bad bro, you're getting a simnel cake.

For anyone who hasn't tried it, highly, highly recommend.

Turtlerussell · 12/03/2024 17:19

Oooh what a good idea

Why did he do that, @Maireas 🤔

Maireas · 12/03/2024 18:33

Too much ale 🍺

RoyalIyRhubarb · 12/03/2024 18:38

He was probably trying to get his recommended 2 litres per day as they used ale instead of water in those days.

Maireas · 12/03/2024 18:39

I think so, RR! You'd rather have that than the water.

King Henry II purchased 5,000kg of cheese!

The real origin of Big Block of Cheese Day.

AliceOlive · 12/03/2024 18:48

Before JG started this fine thread series, we were having a spirited conversation about the availability of cheese in America. I mentioned my grandmother because she always had a drawer full of wonderful cheese. This was my evidence that it’s always been possible to find good cheese in US.

What I forgot to mention is that she also usually gave one person a massive block of cheese every year for Christmas. Grandmother could indeed be more than a bit passive aggressive, so mom was convinced that “The rat gets the cheese.” But I never believed she’d would weaponize something so sacred as cheese.

I was also always a bit sad that I wasn’t chosen.

jeffgoldblum · 12/03/2024 18:50

Yes. It’s ironic that the reason ale was safe was because they used boiled water to make it. So the answer to making water safe was to boil it. But they didn’t know that. Or did they and they just preferred being permanently pissed instead 😂

Love it Grin

I'm glad that the women of Ireland didn't have to resort to window smashing on Friday and were able to vote on constitutional matters!
