A lot is made of the Middleton’s being invited to things as if it’s new, but the late Queen was obviously very aware that people who marry in have their own families that they care for for a very long time

That wasn't always the case, though. It used to be that the ILs of royals were pretty much excluded from royal events. I think that started changing when William was dating Kate and got so close to the Middletons that he wanted them included.

I think it’s far more likely the Queen’s closeness to Sophie that changed things.

Her father attended the royal Christmas at Sandringham in 2005. William was still at university and the Queen hadn’t even met Catherine at that point.

I hadn't thought of that. It was a noticeable change from the earlier years of ILs like the Phillips not being invited.

I think her closeness to Sophie changed quite a lot.

I remember the talk about a lot of changes being made after the error that resulted in Sophie being delayed getting to hospital when she went into labour with Louise. I think the Queen was very spooked by the fact the delay, in part caused by the fact protocols had to be followed etc, almost killed Sophie and Louise.

Maireas · 09/03/2024 15:17

Yes, I think that changed Edward, too. He almost lost them both.

He was abroad if I remember right? Must have been a horrible journey back for him.

Yes, he must have feared the worst.
I think that was the first time that the late Queen visited a relative in an NHS hospital! Poor Sophie was separated from Louise as well, which must have been tough.
I think she'd had an ectopic pregnancy about a year before?.

I have to say I have tried and can’t get on board with the Wensleydale with cranberries. It’s just too sweet for me. I tried it on rye bread and toasted it a bit which was better, but not irresistible.

That is all. (About the cranberry Wensleydale)

I do remember my Grandmother saying “oh if the Queen has visited you know it’s serious!”
Yes, they didn’t have an easy time becoming parents

I find it a tad sweet too , however I class it as a Christmas cheese only !

I think it would be good eaten with walnuts like we do the Stilton at Christmas.

previously book reviewed ‘the narcissism epidemic’, just wondered has anyone read narcissism unmasked and if so would they recommend it?

also I’ve been meaning to recommend this cheese bake

Cheese and royal gossip 2 , cheese harder
Maireas · 09/03/2024 20:21

No, I haven't read that, although someone shared an article about it. Interesting.

Turtlerussell · 09/03/2024 20:30

It’s had good reviews but I haven’t had a chance to flick through a copy before ordering. Just wondered if theres more to it in regard to motivation/cooing strategies rather than the standard:

If you teach a narcissistic child, they are very sensitive to criticism and have to be supported to interpret things as not being about them. If you are a parent there are strategies to help them become more empathetic and resilient.
I'd like to read that book. Actually I'm reading about the significant increase in children diagnosed with ADHD..

Turtlerussell · 09/03/2024 20:42

*coping not cooing

That’s really interesting it can exhibit so early, I thought it became apparent in adulthood.

I may order it, I’ll feed back my review 👍 Thing I likes about Narcissism Epidemic was that it was solidly backed with scientific research. This one seems more about what makes them tick and how to deal with them in real life.

No Turtle I haven’t read that particular book. I do have this one on my ‘to read’ list that I thought could be an interesting read:

‘The Facebook Narcissist’ by Lena Derhally

I’m with you jeff the addition of cranberries would mark it out as a Christmas only cheese at chez Stormzy!😊

No, it exhibits early on - it's important for parents to identify it.

Interesting Re: narcissism. I had a therapist at a cocktail party tell me it often presents in response to unmet childhood needs. I have done zero research into it and that therapist was a bit of a crackpot anyway.

In fairness it does make sense. I’ve heard professionals describe it as immaturity that continues into adulthood. So I assumed it was detected in adults. Interesting to learn it shows sooner.

Learn something every day

Yes.
It’s important to know how to avoid inadvertently creating it. As an example, it’s not uncommon that the overindulged ‘golden child’ turns into the narcissistic adult.

I find it very interesting.

If narcissists were a cheese, they’d be an uncultured runny whiney mess 🧀

Maireas · 09/03/2024 21:38

I think there are certain behaviours, if not properly managed when young, develop more into adulthood. It's actually typical of children to be completely self centered because it's a mechanism to protect. They usually grow out of it, but for some people that never happens completely.
