Indifference to PoW?

FaiIureToLunch · 28/01/2024 08:51

I find it strange that there’s no real interest or concern from the public about POW being in hospital. Nobody seems to be that bothered. If you compare it to the circus if Diana had been in the same situation….. I just find it odd. I always thought she was relatively popular because we’re constantly told she is but actually…. Tumbleweed.

I know it’s her own business etc but it just feels quite odd that somebody can disappear and there is no interest in why. I don’t really know or care what’s happened or why, but the silence is really intriguing. It reminds me of when the brexit referendum happened and I had no idea that there was such strong feeling about the EU…. I had no idea that there was such apathy about the PoW until now. It’s been a real eye opener for me.

I reckon the next generation or two, the monarchy will be gone.

Wouldn’t it be fun to imagine the insults flying if Mumsnet had been around at the time of the abdication?

AIBU to think Wallis is a breath of fresh air and Edward should follow his heart?

OMG YABVVU anyone can see she has no respect for the institution … is a shameful example of why divorce should never be allowed … is a man in disguise … is a wicked American harlot …

😂very true!

I suppose we would have all known about “Edward and Mrs Simpson” well before the Abdication if this had happened today.

I absolutely definitely believe that pro H&M posters are more vehement in their support for the pair. I come back to (and there was a bit of “lively” discussion on this!) the poster saying “gorgeous gorgeous girl” about a long-range photo of Lilibet in which you could see a vague blob of toddler. Nuts! It’s true that some seem to think they know them. Harry and Meghan (nor probably any of the rf) would not allow you within a mile of them.

I’ve seen so many posters sneer about people lining the streets or buying Franklin Mint souvenirs, but swooning over pictures of Meghan, defending the spoilt Harry and attacking critics is no different.

I think the 'gorgeous gorgeous girl' comment in the end was referring to Meghan. A bit weird (and insulting) calling a woman in her 40s a 'girl'.

But if referring to a toddler, very disturbing terminology

Yes, the Palace can't control social media. Social media is why its days are likely to be numbered.

If MN had existed through the eighties and nineties the general public would have known much earlier about Charles' adultery. Although presumably a vocal section of MN posters would have been enraged by the mere suggestion of infidelity.

I'm repeating myself here though, on both counts.

wildernesssw · 05/02/2024 09:56

Well, social media would have also made Diana's affairs with married men more widely known, so perhaps she wouldn't have been elevated to sainthood?

SM is a free-for-all of trial by gossip without evidence. I don't think anyone 'wins' from that. Yes, people can make their personal opinions known without filter. They can also be subject to completely untrue accusations and gossip without redress.

goodbyestranger · 05/02/2024 10:00

Yes of course, Diana's relationships too.

Basically the truth not a Palace spun fantasy.

Roussette · 05/02/2024 10:02

One person 'swooning' and we are all labelled as a homogenous blob? It is one poster. That doesn't mean we are all the same.

wildernesssw · 05/02/2024 10:04

And those disagreeing with you are also not 'swooning', or 'forelock tugging' 'sycophants'.

Those sorts of comments don't allow for healthy discussion, because they belittle the person rather than addressing their point of view

Hmmm....

not sure SM is a bastion of 'truth'.

goodbyestranger · 05/02/2024 10:12

No-one is saying that everything on social media is true. Much is however. But in this case tweets or MN posts about Charles's continuing affair with Camilla and Diana's distress would have been true. And there would have been nothing the Palace could have done.

I will say... I think the radio ham hacking with tampongate was appalling. As I do with the more sophisticated telephone hacking in the MNG court cases.

However, if SM had been around at the beginning of Charles and Diana's marriage, and with Camilla forever in the background, I honestly think it would have been a whole different story. Who knows what the outcome would have been.

goodbyestranger · 05/02/2024 10:18

What kind of a person is on the throne though? Not an ok way to out Charles but good grief....

asrarpolar · 05/02/2024 10:22

@wildernesssw everyone knows about Diana's affairs with married men. It is not a secret. It was all over the papers at the time and Diana herself spoke about them. She also said in her TV interview that no one can watch now, that Charles had an affair with Camilla for a while before she had an affair.
Nobody thinks Diana is blameless. People recognise her faults and still liked her.

Mylovelygreendress · 05/02/2024 11:06

Her faults ? Not sure Will Catling’s wife or Oliver Hoare’s wife would be so generous !

Someone who was joking around while talking to his intimate partner? What on earth is “good grief” about that?

goodbyestranger · 05/02/2024 11:13

It’s revolting as far as I’m concerned Serenster. And to be more accurate he had one than one ‘intimate partner’ at that time, although very delicately put by someone as broad minded as you clearly are.

I know. Imagine being judged by people about an intimate, private conversation which was made public without your knowledge or consent.
Then having people constantly wheeling it out to continue the judgement. Awful.

goodbyestranger · 05/02/2024 11:16

Double standards going on here, re which cheated on wife can be upset and which can’t.

goodbyestranger · 05/02/2024 11:16

I’m judging away. The guy is a dick.

ArcaneWireless · 05/02/2024 11:17

And some didn’t like Diana. And that’s ok.

People recognise the King’s faults and still like him. And some don’t. And that is ok.

And golly, gosh, good grief and wow. The sky hasn’t fallen down.

I’ve no time for folk picking apart hacked phone calls or texts - that kind of press intrusion is despicable and deeply unfair. And gleefully raising it time and time again (regardless of who the hacked victim is) only serves to confirm to the press that they were somewhat justified in doing it in the first place.

And they were not.

There are a lot of holier than thou folk with bumping gums over a private conversation. How many think they’d be happy with the contents of one of their private conversations or texts being put out there for us to pick apart?

I’m the wrong side of 50 and have still to meet a perfect person.

On the basis of that conversation?
I would have thought there was more substantial evidence from a man who has been nearly 60 years in the public eye, but if that's your yardstick, fine.

goodbyestranger · 05/02/2024 11:21

No the wanting to be his mistress’s tampon is just another thing to put in the mix.

He seems to have remarkably few redeeming features; just a dick.

Roussette · 05/02/2024 11:23

No one is perfect, of course not. And hacking by whatever means is awful.

But let's not get away from the fact that both Charles and Camilla were married to other people at the time, and Diana was the mother of his children, an heir to the throne. He was only five years into his marriage before he rekindled his affair with Camilla, and yes I know, Diana had affairs too.
A right royal mess.
