Happy Birthday, Spare!

It’s the one year anniversary of the release of Spare, how are you all celebrating?!

In all seriousness, a year on what impact do you think the book has had on the Royal Family and the Sussexes?

In my opinion it clearly did very well commercially but in popular culture it became a bit of a joke. In terms of the RF I’m not sure it made much difference - to people who already didn’t like them it confirmed what they already believed, to people who did like them it was more evidence that Harry was no loss. I also think even a year later it has made reconciliation between William and Harry impossible.

Apropos of nothing the story about the Tindalls and the Chinese businessman was uncovered thanks to a bit of investigative journalism by………the Daily Mail

That cannot possibly be true. The others would surely never get their information from the Maily Dail.

CathyorClaire · 17/01/2024 21:27

Now now - you’ve been here long enough to know that the particular poster you’re addressing is not a supporter of any member of the royal family - current, past or present

Entirely happy to be a forum outlier.

Whole lot suck 😎

wildernesssw · 17/01/2024 21:32

That dodgy Chinaman! I've been reading 1920s newspapers for some local research. The sinister opium smoking, debauching-white-girls Chinaman was a staple.

Sad the same racist tropes continue a century later

CathyorClaire · 17/01/2024 21:38

Yebbut the lying?

No answers to that so far....

Unless I missed something, the only evidence presented here of any lying was…you said so. I don’t know anything about the story. Happy to read something from a credible source.

Not sure why anyone related to the RF but not in an active role needs to explain anything about business deals (unless it involves selling access.)

Good to hear H&M can do what they want as far as business deals, less criticism on MN hopefully now

wildernesssw · 18/01/2024 07:56

I think the ket part of @AliceOlive 's post was as long as they are not selling access - which to me would include selling private family conversations that are only of financial value because the family concerned is the RF.

The rest of the 'criticism' is amusement at the grandiose claims made by H&M, and their supporters, compared to the reality. Then they are just like any celeb as a souce of chat.

I would agree with that.

For example (I hope I've got this right) if Peter Phillips had said, while pushing milk in China, "My grandmother says 'Drinka Pinta Milka Day'* and winked, he'd definitely have been referring to the RF.

Afaik, he just promoted it from his point of view.

It's a fairly subtle difference but not overly difficult to see.

*I'm possibly the only one old enough to remember that Blush

AliceOlive · 18/01/2024 10:35

I’ll be excited for H&M to make and complete an actual business deal that isn’t related to selling their family out in some way.

AliceOlive · 18/01/2024 10:37

“For royal biographer Penny Junor, the sight of a person with royal connections using their status for financial gain "always looks bad".
"It does not reflect well on the monarchy," she told the BBC - though she adds there is an attraction to such deals. "It is difficult," she said. "I understand the need to feed a family."”

This was regarding Peter Phillips.

Umm... so the fact he was filmed in front of a Palace which had the look of BuckinghamP, and was served milk by a footman inside a Palace had nothing to do with his position?! hahaha

Afaik, he just promoted it from his point of view Really really really not! He was hardly saying calcium is good for your bones, he was trading off his name. But according to a PP, if you don't have an active role in the RF, you can do what business deals you like!

Go H&M!

CathyorClaire · 18/01/2024 10:44

I think any or all royals and hangers on are fair game for scrutiny especially when previously minor players are increasingly having their profiles raised to plug the gaps left by flouncing and scandal.

Link to the reported lying:

Unsurprisingly Fergie and Pete were in there with eager mitts out too

Zara Tindall's secret deal with £100,000 tycoon | Daily Mail Online

I fully expect it to be shouted down as 'not a credible source' but it's worth bearing in mind she hasn't sued yet.

AliceOlive · 18/01/2024 10:47

Yes! AliceOlive hath spoken for all! 🙄

Please stop the ridiculousness. I don’t speak for anyone else. I quite clearly mean people can function as long as they are not using the RF connection.

Of course selling things with a wink toward granny is going to come under scrutiny as it did. in 2008, I believe.

AliceOlive · 18/01/2024 10:52

So she lied to a daily mail reporter about her non executive director title At Hon’s company? Ok. She’s a big fat liar.

That £72 is much less than most directors get paid, BTW

If someone came along and wanted to pay Harry to help with something he had experience doing I cannot imagine anyone taking issue with it. I would be delighted for him.

Roussette · 18/01/2024 10:54

You didn't say that. How would anyone know you meant that non working Royals can do business deals as long as they are not using the RF connection.
You should've qualified your post. You didn't so it is not quite clear at all.

That means PeterP was very naughty then!

No doubt his CHIMPO role at Betterhelp makes full use of his business experience 😂

I wonder why she might have felt the need to do that.

She’s a big fat liar.

We finally concur.

I guess because it wasn’t really anyone’s business?

I can’t imagine my company telling a reporter anything about what a director there does, no matter who their grandmother.

WinnieTheW0rm · 18/01/2024 10:54

Yep! Haven’t any reason to criticize that.

Edited

I am bored Rousette. Not even going to bother with this.

CathyorClaire · 18/01/2024 11:10

It is kind of odd though when she's never been shy about other deals.

AliceOlive · 18/01/2024 11:13

Maybe her boss didn’t want the details in public. Who knows. Maybe there is something shady about it but just not telling a reporter means nothing to me. It doesn’t sound especially lucrative.

It did have to do with his position which must reflect his point of view - it's how he was brought up.
The building may have had the look of Buckingham Palace but it wasn't BP. I'm sure he's been served drinks by servants.
But he didn't emphasise his relationship with the late queen or the rest of the royal family.
Meghan's coffee ad seems much the same: she's helping to promote a brand that she has an interest in. That seems a good way of using her original, plus her acquired, fame.

In neither of those cases is it suggested that people are gaining access to the royal family or providing insight into private conversations.

hahaha
Usually I know when I mean to be funny and that wasn't then 🤷‍♀️
Gratifying to know I'm amusing even when I don't mean to be.
Of course, it depends on the audience...
