Happy Birthday, Spare!

It’s the one year anniversary of the release of Spare, how are you all celebrating?!

In all seriousness, a year on what impact do you think the book has had on the Royal Family and the Sussexes?

In my opinion it clearly did very well commercially but in popular culture it became a bit of a joke. In terms of the RF I’m not sure it made much difference - to people who already didn’t like them it confirmed what they already believed, to people who did like them it was more evidence that Harry was no loss. I also think even a year later it has made reconciliation between William and Harry impossible.

I don’t think anyone is saying they’ve said they don’t milk them…

Just that they don’t say they aren’t doing it when they are?

Am I missing something?

and use the royal connection for his podcast, oh and go on a game show.
yep they never milk (lol) their connections.

But that’s fine, right?

Exactly. And don’t say they get attention even when they don’t want it when clearly, they are arranging it.

Haha yes I forgot I'm a Celebrity! He has also brought out his own line of budgie smugglers (I wish I were joking here but I'm not) as a result of wearing a pair in the jungle. Apparently proceeds will go to charity. But still... it's a bit 🤮

jeffgoldblum · 14/01/2024 11:52

The point for me is this .... when Harry does it it's apparently fine , when others do it , it's milking it !
Ergo that must mean that Harry is milking it too!

Roussette · 14/01/2024 11:53

I think Harry is entitled to 'milk it' when his cousins do it regularly.

AliceOlive · 14/01/2024 11:54

And heck, it’s not even them saying they don’t want the attention as far as I know. It’s posters here who are supportive of them but we shall not call by any particular name because it could cause upset.

I think it's more the hypocrisy of Harry being abused by the press andcpublic for doing exactly ehat his cousins are foing,. Why couldn't he have' half in, half out' when his cousins do, but apparently that's Impossible? Why is Mike Tindall allowed to make a career out of namedropping his inlaws yet he is some kind of hero ( even more, so when he slags off Harry)

jeffgoldblum · 14/01/2024 11:58

I don't think any of them are entitled to "milk it" personally, regardless of who does it too!
But I'm sure others will disagree.

AliceOlive · 14/01/2024 12:01

Are the cousins “half in”?

Harry can do and is doing whatever he wants. But he’s going to receive criticism for it just as they do. Point in case, I never hear of Mike or Zara here in the US. The only time I do hear of them is on this board where people are comparing their activities to Harry and vilifying them.

Ah so you do think Harry is milking it.

ArcaneWireless · 14/01/2024 12:07

I don’t see how anyone should be criticised for selling photos of their own lives.

If someone gets their hoohas out on Love Island and can do it, what is wrong with anyone else doing it? I wouldn’t do it myself but each to their own.

Sometimes we might like a peep into the lives of others.

Pictures don’t do harm. Words do that.

Notmyhair · 14/01/2024 12:06

It's not the word I would use, I was mirroring what another poster said. Personally I think if his cousins advertise themselves and they are within the RF, why shouldn't they, a couple who are not within the RF make a living.

I knew you or someone would pick up on that, very predictable!

Good grief, they are everywhere, they've just been in Australia. Then there's Mike's podcast, then I'm a Celeb...

Notmyhair · 14/01/2024 12:15

Ah well @Roussette indeed this board is predictable.

I don’t like to think that anyone is doomed to spending their life comparing himself to others and basing their own behavior on what someone else has done. Or their own success or failures on another.

It does seem like Harry and Meghan have not sorted that out for themselves yet though.

Getthethrowonthesofa · 14/01/2024 12:20

Roussette · 14/01/2024 12:15

I totally agree

Because Zara and Mike have no titles, get no money from the public purse and do no royal engagements, they are fully out and always have been, they only attend things as family. Like crimbo. They don’t go and open community centres and the like.

there is no way for Zara and Mike to monetise their titles, as they have none. They both also have successful careers, Zara is even an Olympic medalist. And Mike was very clear, that as he has no title he doesn’t need to ask permission, but always does, he phoned William and asked if he could do celeb.

Roussette · 14/01/2024 12:15

I’m in the US, Rousette. No one knows of them nor cares. I suspect the Queen, when depriving Harry of his opportunity to monetize himself, took into consideration that the rest of the world will never see Harry as being on the same level as Mike Tindall.

AliceOlive · 14/01/2024 12:23

Was Tindall doing the game show and the podcast as someone married into the family or as a former rugby player? Seems like it all has more to do with his own achievements. Though having the family on the podcast was really fun!

BoohooWoohoo · 14/01/2024 12:34

I would bet that when they wanted half in, they were thinking of tiaras at state dinners and meeting powerful people like Presidents and CEOs not lying in tanks filled with cockroaches and eating spiders. Nobody outside of the UK will have watched I’m a Celeb because of him.I would be surprised if his podcast was listened to by many people outside the UK- maybe some rugby fans but they probably have their own national ex stars who will be more interesting to them.

jeffgoldblum · 14/01/2024 12:37

As I have long alliterated to my kids over the years , the whole so and so did it too , first doesn't wash with me if they have done something they shouldn't have or that I don't agree with.
And this is why , on what is at core a parenting website , that I find it so annoying and silly that adults are using this very same tactic to excuse the actions of whichever royal they happen to be defending.

Everyone is responsible for their own behaviour.

Why get personal?. It's unnecessary. Argue the point, stop having a go at me.
Your unpleasant, personal post to me on the regency thread was deleted, by the way.
