Happy Birthday, Spare!

It’s the one year anniversary of the release of Spare, how are you all celebrating?!

In all seriousness, a year on what impact do you think the book has had on the Royal Family and the Sussexes?

In my opinion it clearly did very well commercially but in popular culture it became a bit of a joke. In terms of the RF I’m not sure it made much difference - to people who already didn’t like them it confirmed what they already believed, to people who did like them it was more evidence that Harry was no loss. I also think even a year later it has made reconciliation between William and Harry impossible.

Apologies @Notmyhair , you are completely correct, I was trying to keep it short and sweet so as not to bore the lurkers ! 🤣

ArcaneWireless · 13/01/2024 15:39

Quite @Notmyhair

It almost felt like darvo territory. And if not that, a derail. Some might even say it felt like bullying. Anyway, it felt very wrong.

I’m not fond of that kind of intensity - especially when it is directed at someone who I feel tries to see both points of view and is fair.

To me, that was far from fair.

Notmyhair · 13/01/2024 15:41

Yes it actually made me feel a bit uneasy about things but I can't say anymore on here about that.

JaneJeffer · 13/01/2024 15:41

OK now if everyone could just give me their bank details I think we can leave it there.

Notmyhair · 13/01/2024 15:43

The 'Spares' seem to go off the rails. Margaret and Andrew. Can't be much fun being less important than your sibling.

That is a good observation.

But it seems the institution is crap at handleing them in spite of thousands of years of experience.

All seem to understand and accept that role is a support role. That seems to be sustainable for all of them to a certain age and then becomes a problem.

I make a guess that the problem is fatigue for the spares at a certain point in their maturity, and a desire to create something for themselves coupled with the monarchs sense of entitlement/selfishness.

I do not think you can be raised to be king or queen without selfishness and entitlement. They may also be ok as people and so on.

Anne managed ok. I think it's entirely possible to come to terms with a situation and make the best of it.

She was not the spare - Andrew was.

King Charles does pay both income tax and capital gains tax. None of the royals legally have to pay tax, but they have done since 1993.

But no IHT and we have no idea how much income tax as it's voluntary, it could be £23 for all we know. In the Royal Report what income tax he has paid is combined with VAT so no one has any idea whatsoever how much he pays.

Oh, and no corporation tax or capital gains tax from the Duchies. There is no other company in the UK not liable for corporation tax or CGT and given the massive profits both he and William receive from these private/not private companies, there is no reason why the royals are exempt from paying the taxes we pay. Tax dodgers
