A turkey, absolute balls of stuffing or a right Christmas cracker? We'll let you decide. Please keep the discussion interesting, civilised and relevant - the Holiday Armadillo is lurking!

Can I just say, ArcaneWireless, I really love your writing style!

Maireas · 28/12/2023 11:05

It's so pithy, isn't it, @TheCountessofFitzdotterel ! I must admit to being a fan of the gifs as well 😀

ArcaneWireless · 28/12/2023 11:09

I’m probably being unfair.

But I bloody hate the damage that words can do - especially those which are based in hate and disseminated with just malice in mind.

I think they are both intelligent enough to have known what they have done. Both are clever enough to choose their words very carefully (or backtrack mealiemouthed style)so I can’t see how not.

Maireas · 28/12/2023 11:13

I don't think that you're unfair, because it's not been a one off interview or article, it's been sustained, a modus vivandi, a career move, to monetise their supposed victimhood at the hands of the RF. Some of the claims are nonsensical, but some are cruel and damaging.

I really hope she’s going as she knows it’s a lost cause and will be damaging to her own career to stay. Her choice rather than them blaming her for them being a pr disaster of their own making.

Is she the one who “ encouraged” MM to move along the red carpet ?

While Charles MAY have some hopes of reconciliation I doubt if William ever does. If Charles did so, he risks alienating the ones who have stood by him and have done all the positive work for the RF. I believe therefore he would never initiate it.
Harry made the foolish move of going after William's wife and children and that is unforgivable. Once Charles is gone there will never be any reconciliation. Some things are unforgivable and William will have enough on his plate with being a King and looking after his immediate family.

JSMill · 28/12/2023 16:16

It must really hurt for a grandfather to not know his grandchildren. KCII looks like a warm and loving grandfather to his dgcs and dsgcs.

ArcaneWireless · 28/12/2023 16:58

Aye. Ye can go poking at family and ye may well get aff wi’it.

Poke at a loved spouse or kids? Bets are off.

I will never understand how H turned on Kate. I honestly felt there was genuine love there back in the day. She did nothing wrong apart from have a top job in waiting. And the sad thing about it - as the Royals have proven since - is that there was room for everyone to truly shine.

So what if there was a chain of command? A quick bob and it would have been on with the show.

My old Group Captain got a quick brace and a swift salute. It didn’t mean that I was unworthy as a lower rank. I was important to him as it goes. I cared for his kids for the duration of my posting. In his house I was treated like family. I stayed over. Got invited for Christmas. No rank, no ceremony. But he got the proper respect his rank deserved outside that front door and also because everyone adored him. Me included. It wouldn’t have occurred to me to behave otherwise.

Instead, this pair have chosen to seemingly fester in their self made sordid little grief hole - which may as well have been a stateside version of Alan Partridge’s Linton Travel Tavern. (Although I concede sordid is probably superfluous). And for what? It certainly looks to me as though it is because they didn’t want to be mindful of the ranks.

I think that the king would be a lovely granda. I’m pretty certain that the Queen would be a twinkly naughty nan. At least they have Doria. (Who seems delightful too) but they could have had so much more.

Thinking on it MrsMingleton you are right. A father may always hope for reconciliation but it would be a punch in the coupon for those who have also been targeted. The poor king is in a terrible position.

I suspect Charles is a lot more astute than people give him credit for. When it comes to it,he will put the monarchy first, and he knows full well the damage Harry has attempted to inflict, and that he is not to be trusted. Charles will also know just how many of the claims are untrue, or twisted, much more than we will.

I suspect he’s very upset about what’s happened, very saddened. Saddened to be estranged from Harry and his grandkids. He will always leave a line of communication open to him. As a father, not as a monarch. He will also know the truth about Harry;s mental state. How it really works between him and Megan, and what’s caused this.

But that doesn’t mean he will have him back in any meaningful way ie undertaking royal duties. He would only do that if he truly believed Harry was not wanting to come back for financial gain, to boost the brand, to get more stories to sell. We saw that with the rejection of allowing them to come to sandringham for Xmas. It would have made everyone uncomfortable, on their guard, and would simply have been for financial gain for Harry and Megan. That’s why they try to bring their own photographers to private meetings, so they own the rights and can publish the pics. And it’s also why the palace doesn’t let them. They know full well what Harry and Megan are trying to do.

will Harry be back in Charles life time, I suspect so, as if the marriage ends, he will spend part of his time back in the uk . But like andrew does. As a family member, not a working royal.

MaturingCheeseball · 28/12/2023 17:16

It doesn’t matter what type of family it is, or wherever in the world, but parents always forgive an errant child. My dm danced round my sibling till her dying day, excusing everything: physical violence, mental abuse, stealing… They say a parent is only as happy as their unhappiest child.

I’ve always detested the Prodigal Son story, having a personal stake!

Agree that Harry (or Meghan with Harry) went way too far going after Kate. In Spare there was some barbed comment about only he, Harry, had married for love. As for Endgame… well, that really was the endgame for him and William. Nicholas Witchell (who appeared to know a thing or three) said the stories had come straight from the Sussexes.

Vespanest · 28/12/2023 17:40

It would have hurt Harry to see the children together, the wanting to escape the “soap opera” whilst giving his children titles and removing them from the only peers who understand. Harrys children have the double edged sword of children of influential parents avoiding friendships because of loose lips and children parents wanting to exploit the royal angle.

A week or so ago someone posted a link to a video, it was maybe an hour long. I watched some & now can’t find it, can anyone help please.
I think it was 2 Australian presenters discussing all the drama in the books and I recall a lot of discussion on Meaghan always being ‘on the floor in tears just as Harry got home’

Yes I wonder how he reacted when he saw Mike hug George like it was the most normal thing in the world, something he does without thought, and the kids all clearly close.

hes not seen George properly what since he was 6? Other than at major events like the queens funeral or the coronation, they likely spent no time together, Harry is effectively a stranger to the Wales’s kids now. Louis won’t even know who he is. Charlotte will barely remember him. And they don’t know Archie and Lilly, they are strangers basically.

it would have highlighted the distance that is now there.

wildernesssw · 28/12/2023 18:17

A quick bob and it would have been on with the show.

There's the story about one of Wellington's staff in the Peninsula War going to a local Spanish dignitary to buy wheat to supply the troops with bread.

He came back empty handed because the local dignitary was offended because the non-noble (and therefore lowly) British officer wouldn't bow to him - the officer saying it was demeaning for one of His Majesty's officers, who was liberating the Spanish from the French, to bow to the equivalent of the local squire.

Wellington went the next day and secured the wheat - he said if nodding his head secured the supplies the army needed then he would nod his head. It simply didn't matter to him, he wasn't diminished, and the end aim was the important thing.

Formal hierarchy only matters if your position in the hierarchy is the basis of your self-worth.
