Behind the Scenes at the Coronation - Boxing Day

I love things that go behind the scenes at special events or show how TV programmes are made, or explain stuff I don't know about how stuff is organised. I'm the person who watches behind the scenes clips on YouTube! I know it won't be completely candid because the cameras are there but I'm still looking forward to it.

So I thought I'd start a fun thread asking what burning but trivial question would you like to see the answer to?

Mine - do royals have bladders of iron or do they build secret loo breaks into the schedule of big events?

Mine is - how many times did all those waffly long capes actually get stood on?

ANightingale · 17/12/2023 17:51

What do they talk about in the golden coach? E.g.

"Ooh, my bum hurts, Charles - the suspension in this thing is bloody awful!"
"Oh, stop moaning, Camilla, and wave to that pleb over there."

I wonder if they had to practise to avoid them. Given how many times someone has stood on my heel I bet everyone was jerked back at least once.

I remember the late Queen saying it's a really uncomfortable coach, I bet poor Camilla got travel sick, no wonder they used a different coach on one journey.

"Quick, Charles, where did you put the sick-bag?"
"Ah ... erm, one thinks in one of these side pouches ... er ..."
"Bleeuuuurgh!"

Ah, so that's why the crowns have those purple velvet inserts!

CarolinaInTheMorning · 17/12/2023 19:20

As to loo breaks, this coronation was much shorter than the late Queen's in 1953. They do have that time when they disappear behind the altar, but going to the loo in all that get-up would be a challenge.

I've read that in 1953 some of the peers had sandwiches hidden in their coronets (they had to get there really early and then stay through the 3-hour plus ceremony.)

I listened to an episode of The Reunion on Radio 4 about the Coronation, they were speaking to the Queen's maid of honour. Apparently the Keeper of the Privy Purse had chocolate in it in case they felt faint! It's really worth a listen on the iPlayer

Also curious about the toilet situation. And if they have a plan for what to do if someone drops something important. Would the cameras cut away to something else while they scrabble around to pick it up? Has anything ever been dropped and we haven't noticed?

At one point I was slightly worried that the crown wasn't going to stay on in Camilla!

One maid of honour (think it was Lady Anne Coke) nearly fainted and was held up by the person standing next to her. She says you can see in the film that she's swaying slightly.

Can you imagine how awful? It was so long and started so early.

Adam Hills was invited to the Coronation, he said on The Last Leg that the audience/congregation had to go 5 hours without access to a loo....

Maireas · 18/12/2023 19:05

A colleague's parents attended. Apparently there are people you can signal to if you need the loo or feel unwell. They can escort you to a bathroom/medical room. No-one is going to be left for 5 hours!

MrsLeonFarrell · 19/12/2023 09:22

It's good to know there are loos. All in all I'm glad I will never be invited to anything like it though.

OP posts:
Maireas · 19/12/2023 15:16

It even happens at BP when you go to an event such as an investiture or a reception. There are people ready to help with various needs, and loos are always available!

rosyglowcondition · 19/12/2023 19:34

I'll enjoy watching this. Love all the behind the scenes things. I'll probably be pretty merry though so easily amused. Kids will be glued to their Xbox ...result!

ThePoshUns · 20/12/2023 21:02

Oh fab. Do you know what channel?

JSMill · 20/12/2023 22:12

It's on BBC. It's one of the few things I'm looking forward to watching over Christmas. The tv is dire.

ThePoshUns · 21/12/2023 03:31

Thanks. I saw the coronation exhibition at Buckingham palace in the Summer. The gowns especially Camilla's were spectacular

I loved her gown, and nice that she wore it again at the State Opening of Parliament. There are limited opportunities for wearing things like that even for royals!

I loved the gowns and wish we had gotten to see more of them. I was so pleased Camilla wore hers again at the state opening of Parliament.

MrsLeonFarrell · 26/12/2023 20:17

I didn't realise that it was so much more than the Coronation!

I'm really enjoying it so far, my favourite section was the brothers from Liverpool who had been awarded a Prince's Trust grant many years ago and created an amazing business. I loved their conversation with the king.

OP posts:
Sisterpita · 26/12/2023 20:19

My favourite bit was the just ram it on (the crown).
