Behind the Scenes at the Coronation - Boxing Day

I love things that go behind the scenes at special events or show how TV programmes are made, or explain stuff I don't know about how stuff is organised. I'm the person who watches behind the scenes clips on YouTube! I know it won't be completely candid because the cameras are there but I'm still looking forward to it.

So I thought I'd start a fun thread asking what burning but trivial question would you like to see the answer to?

Mine - do royals have bladders of iron or do they build secret loo breaks into the schedule of big events?

Sandringham, Balmoral and Birkhall are privately owned.

Windsor, KP, Buckingham Palace, St James, Clarence House and Hillsborough are state owned. He and Camilla live in Clarence House still - that’s been their official residence since marriage (I think they’ll stay there rather than move to Buckingham palace, but that’s just opinion - I don’t think any of them will move back in full time after the renovations).

The wales property and Isles of Scilly ones are owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, same with Highgrove. castle of Mey is held in a trust as well now I believe. No idea about Transylvania.

William currently has use of three, but will inherit the privately owned ones and use of the state owned ones when he becomes king so will be in the same position.

Thanks for the information YetMoreNewBeginnings

Why do they need so many? Why can’t the property portfolio be slimmed down? Think of the upkeep and staff required to keep them all running! And the staff needed to manage it all. It seems so excessive.

And the accounts are not exactly accessible are they? I find it hard to believe that staff aren’t shared out between public and private buildings. The finances are all a bit murky if you ask me!

I think we've plenty of evidence that this government isn't a big fan of listening to advice.

Anyway, back to the topic: I enjoyed the documentary. It was interesting to see how they practised, etc, and it encouraged me to watch the one about the uniforms presented by Patrick Grant, which I found even more interesting.

Is that the one that I accidentally referenced with my incorrect thread title? I must look it up, I'd love to know more about the uniforms, they look so complicated.

I recently loved visiting the Windrush exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. Charles commissioned 12 portraits of leaders from the Windrush generation. I think the monarchy sponsoring the Arts and bringing in more diversity in who gets celebrated is a good use of their money.

I agree. I loved that the King did a few things celebrating the Windrush generation, who should absolutely be celebrated. Can't help thinking it was his way of pushing back against the Suella agenda, but I could be completely wrong.

Yes, the Patrick Grant one was good as well - that family company history, and the huge amount of knowledge they have at their fingertips!

Maireas · 02/01/2024 09:47

That family business in Tottenham was amazing. So much skill and knowledge. The workforce were very loyal, too. That was such an interesting programme. I liked them measuring up the regimental goat for his cape!

The one about Kashket ( the tailors) with Patrick Grant is called “Coronation Tailors, for for a king” and was on BBC2. There is a Channel five one called “The King’s guard” which was all about the household divisions and their preparation for the Coronation. The Tower of London documentary on Channel 5 also showed some of the prep that the Yeoman Warders did in a couple of the episodes. So there’s quite a bit to watch if you are so inclined 😆

“Fit for a king “. Didn’t see typo in time to fix it 🙄

@MrsLeonFarrell we are hoping they put another series about Westminster Abbey on as well. So you may want to add that to our list 😊

The more being the scenes stuff the better, of any kind, I'm the person on YouTube watching behind the scenes videos about the making of tv and films!

I once watched a programme about the director David Lean and a friend wondered why I was interested in the making of the films - why not just watch the films - but I found it interesting. Angela Kelly's book about the clothes and the fabrics was the same sort of behind-the-scenes look at what went into the late Queen's wardrobe. I ought to re-watch the Patrick Grant programme.

smilesy · 03/01/2024 10:27

In an episode of Tower of London programme, they showed them
all having the new CiiiR cypher put on their uniforms. Interestingly, not a lot of the cyphers have changed throughout the rest of the military. It will be a huge and expensive job. I assume that the Yeoman Warders’ uniforms were prioritised because they are always in contact with the public

PassifloraEvangelist · 06/01/2024 17:29

Could someone remind me of the title and channel okease? I know there are a few similar programmes.

Sadly I’ve seen reports of over 900 complaints about this programme - overly positive apparently.

I’ve just sent a complementary comment to balance it out.

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 07/01/2024 08:08

Less than 900 complaints about a programme watched by millions isn't too bad. It wasn't meant to be Panorama-esque critique of the monarchy. It was largely about the work that goes into an event (the Coronation) and a celebration of the people - highly skilled, highly talented, ordinary members of the public - who are behind the scenes and make it all happen. Their work/expertise is extraordinary and should be celebrated and acknowledged, and it is a pity Republic have overlooked them when targeting this programme.

I seem to recall reading that after the abdication George VI had to buy Sandringham from Edward VIII as because they are private residences they were inherited by the eldest, Edward, not by the King.

He did indeed. It cost George VI £300,000
