Behind the Scenes at the Coronation - Boxing Day

I love things that go behind the scenes at special events or show how TV programmes are made, or explain stuff I don't know about how stuff is organised. I'm the person who watches behind the scenes clips on YouTube! I know it won't be completely candid because the cameras are there but I'm still looking forward to it.

So I thought I'd start a fun thread asking what burning but trivial question would you like to see the answer to?

Mine - do royals have bladders of iron or do they build secret loo breaks into the schedule of big events?

I'd love to know what Kate is like behind the scenes when nobody is watching and she can relax. Does she swear, fart loudly, get drunk etc.

My favourite bit was the just ram it on (the crown).

That was hilarious, I remember thinking at the time that the archbishop had almost screwed Camilla's crown on. Now we know why!

I also really liked only hearing from Anne and Camilla's attendants. Somehow not having loads of the family talking focused it on the King and Queen more effectively.

This is just wonderful! I'm loving it!

JewelleryCat · 26/12/2023 21:51

I loved it as well, I thought it was a beautiful programme

SparklingBubbly · 26/12/2023 23:05

“She knows when to wink at a bishop” re the Queen cracked me up!

And Princess Anne is professional AF.

thankyouforthedayz · 27/12/2023 04:51

I noticed PoW curtseyed to KC on greeting him. I sort of expected that Charles would have got rid of all that really archaic stuff, the RF website makes it very clear it's optional and I noticed the chief embroiderer didn't curtsey when she met the K and Q to show Camilla's beautiful train.

It was a fab programme. Our family had a special interest in it as my DC attends Westminster School so were aware of the sheer scale of the preparations- especially in the Abbey. The school was closed the week before for security reasons and online schooling returned 😩 but some of the pupils took part in the coronation service itself as is tradition. The King spent some time meeting the pupils informally (and unscheduled) in the playground on rehearsal days some time before and was apparently a great hit. I loved his very obvious affection for his son and grandchildren which obviously goes against the narrative of ‘Spare’.

I’m glad that his work in conservation is being recognised. I recall in the 80’s and early 90’s the terrible press he received being labelled as an oddball whenever he tackled the subject, when actually he had studied the evidence and was in fact, spot on.

Princess Anne is just fab.

whatever your view on the monarchy, the King and Queen work incredibly hard at a time of life when most people are winding down. I think he has had a great start to his reign.

There is a Penny Vincenzi novel where the main character is a debutante presented to George V and Queen Mary at Buckingham Palace in the 1930s. She is dying for a wee the whole time but there is no toilet, only a chamber pot behind a screen for anyone desperate; she is not desperate enough to use it and just suffers instead. No idea whether this was actually how it was but has a ring of truth for me. People were not constantly "hydrating" in those days and could probably hold on a lot longer.

I watched a programme about the people who made the supplementary wedding cakes for Charles and Diana's wedding. They were just told to deliver them to the Palace on x day and time, met no royals and didn't even get a cup of tea!

mikado1 · 27/12/2023 06:57

I recorded this, looking forward to watching! As a teacher, 5h without a toilet break would be no problem 😊

Popetthetreehugger · 27/12/2023 07:03

🤣all these years on and I’m still shouting adulterous wanker or trollop at the screen if I’m unlucky enough to see their smug faces before I turn the telly off ! I shall click back in when William takes over .

How pathetic.

really enjoyed it. was lovely to see the warmth between KC and POW/PW.

Dustyblue · 27/12/2023 07:35

Colonial here in Aus and would love to see this. A good doco on The Family puts me in great form, I watch loads of them on Youtube.

Where can I find it? Youtube might be good to me...?

I do have Netflix but am guessing it won't be there. Shame.

How pathetic.

Why? It's how some people feel about them? I see Jimmy Saville's mate, greed and selfishness when I look at Charles.

Yes I noticed that as well. I see Catherine as the sort of person who would keep up the old traditions without any self consciousness, out of respect and love. I do however like the fact that they made it optional because I think it's a bit archaic.

I think that Charles' chief on the environment shows the advantage of the long view in public life. Politicians are often limited by only being in power for a comparatively short time but Charles, and to be fair Philip, have been emphasising the environment and have had the spotlight long enough to bring attention to the subject. It's good that William is taking it forward as well. I wouldn't want to see them making statements about politics but on subjects like this and other challenges society as a whole faces I think they can do good work and bring more awareness.

I thought the whole family seemed to have found peace between themselves. Large changed either being you together or split you apart and I'm glad that they can support each other.

Nancy Mitford said the same about when she was presented - Vincenzi probably used her account.

The curtsey is optional and was with the Queen, although I suspect she preferred that the family stick to the tradition. It’s probably a habit with Catherine. It’s a personal choice

Dustyblue · 27/12/2023 09:29

@MrsLeonFarrell Yay, it is indeed on Youtube.

Bring on kiddo bedtime, looking forward to it. 😎

You just gave me a flashback! I think that was the 1st of Penny Vincenzi's "Spoils of Time" trilogy?

But in my memory, the main character/matriarch Celia Lytton presents her twin daughters, Adele & Venetia at Court, they swap places etc.

Thanks so much for the reminder, might have to dig those books out 😁

BalloonSlayer · 27/12/2023 09:47

I can't remember the name of it (I think Penny V's book titles aren't very memorable tbh) but it was the one about the woman who had been a doctor but given it up to get married, who inherits money and goes back to medicine, much to her husband's displeasure.

I am glad that @MrsDanversGlidesAgain has confirmed that was taken from an actual account, it did ring true.
