Behind the Scenes at the Coronation - Boxing Day

I love things that go behind the scenes at special events or show how TV programmes are made, or explain stuff I don't know about how stuff is organised. I'm the person who watches behind the scenes clips on YouTube! I know it won't be completely candid because the cameras are there but I'm still looking forward to it.

So I thought I'd start a fun thread asking what burning but trivial question would you like to see the answer to?

Mine - do royals have bladders of iron or do they build secret loo breaks into the schedule of big events?

No one is forcing you to read this thread. There are plenty of other topics on MN. Go and find one that interests you.

It's a forum where people express their opinions whether it's negative or positive. Was the programme purely gushing or did it touch on the people shouting 'not my King' at the Coronation?

SparklingBubbly · 28/12/2023 01:36

Meh, people get divorced, it’s 2023 🤷🏻‍♀️

Charles & Diana were never meant to be. They both had affairs but that was like, 30 years ago.

Does anyone know if this is airing in Australia at all? Lots of us adore the RF down here 😄.

You're assuming that everyone who enjoyed the program or found it interesting is thereby a royal fanatic who thinks they're all bloody marvellous people.

There's simple.

I was able to watch it on YouTube in the US. You might be able to access it that way.

Yes, I watched it last night here in Oz.

ThePoshUns · 28/12/2023 08:27

Yes @Rockybooboo you can do that without using personal insults.
I watched it and found it interesting. I'm not a 'sycophantic' royalist but have an interest in royal history.
I found the history of the crowns interesting as well as the work that went into making the gowns.

wildernesssw · 28/12/2023 08:57

Actually I am a luke-warm republican, in that I think having any significant national role allocated by birth doesn't make sense these days.

I can still appreciate what went into a major state occasion, and also when the individuals filling the role perform it well.

Novella4 · 28/12/2023 08:58

@tinklylaugh01

You are not alone . Many people have already complained about the lack of balance in BBC reporting on the ‘royals’ in general.
A ‘behind the scenes’ look which did not mention the arrest of peaceful protestors or Andrew draped in so called finery ?

I found the insight into how much rehearsal was done enlightening. It puts into context when people say RF only work x days based on the number of engagements. In reality there is a lot more research and preparation before the official event.

Princess Anne’s point that you need to wait for the TV cameras go in to make sure you know your exit was clearly pragmatic based on years of experience.

Samcro · 28/12/2023 09:55

what a shame we can't have one thread on this topic which is just nice. yet people have to make nasty comments.

What nasry about wanting more balance in reporting of The Royals.

Yes at that point I had an imaginary vision of a past occasion where the royals tried to exit only to find a camera in the way!

Colonial here in Aus and would love to see this. A good doco on The Family puts me in great form, I watch loads of them on Youtube.

Where can I find it? Youtube might be good to me...?

I do have Netflix but am guessing it won't be there. Shame.

I'm in Oz - just watched on You Tube.

Just watched on iplayer as nobody else here would be interested. I loved it. The embroidery was so beautiful. Not a single mention of the King's younger son, I noticed, but frankly who can blame them.

But why would he be mentioned anyway ? He attended very briefly as a guest - the programme was about the people who contributed to KC's coronation .

I’m a republican and I enjoyed it.

I like Camila and I liked seeing her sister talk about her so lovingly.

pinkmont · 29/12/2023 11:43

It was a great glimpse into how it all came together, loved it.

I can't even imagine how they felt when they walked onto the balcony to be greeted by tens of thousands of people, is there anyone else in the world who would bring in that many people ? Camilla's sister couldn't put into words how it felt. It must be incredible for the RF kids to see that huge support, both from the Jubilee and the Coronation. It certainly looked amazing.

upinaballoon · 29/12/2023 12:30

Can you remember when William and Catherine went out on to the balcony for the first time on their wedding day? It wasn't hard to lip read. C just looked at all the people and said, "Wow!"

wordler · 29/12/2023 14:06

The sheer amount of rehearsal was amazing - I’d imagined them rehearsing a lot in the actual abbey - didn’t occur to me that they’d built a whole replica area in Buckingham Palace to start practicing so early.

Funny how Anne also insists on seeing everything with her own eyes and says she never just relies on someone else telling her the plan. I wonder if she’s been burned by someone getting it wrong on a previous occasion.

Maireas · 29/12/2023 14:19

Possibly, but I think Anne is the sort of person to do her homework. She's always very well informed at engagements. She probably just wants to ensure that she gets it right.

megletthesecond · 29/12/2023 14:25

I suspect Ann has been stuck somewhere in the past and learnt the hard way.

Occasional2023 · 29/12/2023 14:34

I am so pleased that the late Queen's family were able to persuade her that spending her last days at Balmoral was OK and that any inconvenience to others should not be a consideration. Also the fact that Anne was in Scotland at the time and could be with her mother at the end was indeed serendipity.

I really liked that we didn't hear from loads of random royals but got to hear from those with an active role officials and Camilla's attendants. It was a change and I think meant we heard more practical details and less "Charles is lovely" word salad. Which doesn't mean I think Charles is horrible just that I preferred hearing from the bishops and the choir etc

Yes. That was new information for me and so lovely that at the end she was able to die where she wanted to.
