Part 2 of a nice, unproblematic thread to discuss some of the fab outfits from the Duchess of Sussex, and some of the many great causes she (and Harry) and Archewell supports.

Personally, I loved the off white suit. She looked beautiful and I think it was the right color. White is peaceful especially given the topic. I also think it was inappropriate, don't see the big deal with open shoulders. If she had her cleavage showing or wearing a short shirt, that would be inappropriate but maybe I'm more liberal than some.

Ineedwinenow · 12/10/2023 15:02

What’s happened to our lovely happy clothing thread! I’ve just landed in the UK and it’s not very happy anymore 🤦‍♀️ I daren’t check Catherine’s thread now 😆

I loved Meghans gold dress and her letter jacket! I like the off shoulder part of the white outfit but I feel the body part of the outfit is too big for her, she has stunning legs she doesn’t need to drown them in wide leg trousers! Get those legs out Meghan Grin

mrsmingleton · 12/10/2023 15:45

I think she uses the off shoulder thing as an attempt to emphasise her better parts ( as we all do) so in this case to widen her shoulders to counteract her relatively straight and up down middle. It's certainly a favourite style.

I think she certainly does seem to like the wide/off shoulder look. I think she wears it well too usually. Personally I prefer the more gentle versions, like her wedding dress, and thought this one was not such an easy look. In the end though, if she likes it and feels comfortable in it that is all that matters.

Serenster · 12/10/2023 17:02

Oh the dress that sold out within an hour? Yes, it was stunning. Suited her gorgeous figure.

It was a lovely dress, and the colour suited Meghan very well indeed. But just pointing out that Joanna Ortiz released the dress in March 2022, and Meghan wore it a year later in 2023, so if it did indeed sell out it would only have been the very limited stock that remained available a year later. But I am quite sure that Joanna Ortiz was delighted by the attention it brought to her brand.

EmpressSisi · 12/10/2023 17:27

I didn’t like the cream outfit. I can’t tell if it was a jump suit or separates, but neither the shades nor the style of the top and bottoms seemed to match. It also seemed to drown her.

But I LOVED the letterman jacket and skinny jeans look. I’ve always thought she nails the cool casual looks better than her formal.

MissElinorDashwood · 12/10/2023 17:54

@Serenster It’s ok. There’s no need to over analyse. You can just let something positive pass you by without trying to tear it down. She’s successful, happy, well liked by many and obviously still very influential.

These are wins for her. Shes still alive and for that I will always be grateful. Meghan didn’t let the global bullying and trolling of her, tear her down. The rabid hate didn’t destroy her. She’s a survivor!

I for one will celebrate every win she has no matter how small and insignificant (as I would for every survivor). I admire her strength and determination in the face of pure, unadulterated hate. It doesn’t matter how many times the establishment, trolls and even family members try to knock her down, she gets back up.

Just let us enjoy seeing her on rare occasions that we do (this is for all of those who have been trying to derail this thread with negativity).

We want to be able to talk about her clothes and charity work in peace just like supporters of Kate are afforded in the same thread set up for her.

If this is too hard to do then please feel free to ignore this thread.

Thank you x

I wish there was a way to pin this to the top of the thread.

That’s all fine, both of you. I don’t think hyperbole helps anyone though, so will continue to point it out - on all topics - when I see it.

(You must have missed the bit when I said the dress looked lovely on Meghan - I often like what she wears!)

Well as the dress did in fact sell out, it's not, in fact, hyperbole.

@MissElinorDashwood is pointing out that it was unnecessary to go hunting for the exact time and moment when it sold out (when that wasn't mentioned, nor do I think it matters), just to be negative about something Meghan is wearing (ETA: or to add negativity in response to a poster to be more precise. It was unnecessary)

But I agree, with Elinor, and she, and others, shouldn't have to post 50 times in this thread asking to keep it positive.

OP posts:
Roussette · 12/10/2023 18:38

I just think some posters literally cannot bear any positivity about her and have to scrabble around to find something negative to bring up, within the positivity. It is very odd.

I'm not a fan of the Monarchy (there's a surprise!) but I can compliment Kate on something she wears if I think she looks fab in it. I don't think any further to be honest.

Great post of yours @MissElinorDashwood

If anything, I understated it @queentim. I believe once the dress sold out, other, similar styles started to sell out too.

What ever you want. Fan love is one of the many type of loves decried by the Ancient Greeks. It’s not as of any of it matters. People are allowed to have an interest in what they are interested in.

ALittleTeawithmilk · 13/10/2023 00:15

I think you are misidentifying the support for Meghan Markle as being merely fandom. It’s an element for some. For many others, like myself, it’s support for a woman who has experienced the most severe levels of misogynistic, and often racist, abuse by the media and on social media.

If I had what I want, all the vilifying of Meghan Markle would stop now.

And it matters. Bullying, be it face to face, in the traditional media and on social media, matters.

Very happy to read that everyone is on the same page with maintaining the tone of this thread.

Posters have asked for a non-problematic, positive thread, where we can discuss Duchess Meghan's clothes/style and activities, and that is how this one will remain.

MNHQ is tired as well, I'm sure. I think it has been recognized that there is a specific set of posters who consistently seek to not engage in the spirit of the thread, and/or derail. Please continue to ignore as much as possible, and report posts that break MN Guidelines if posters continue to behave immaturely.

That said, let us move forward with positivity!

It is really in the spirit of MN to say that you can only participate in a thread if you toe the party line (for want of a better phrase) ? its only a discussion about clothes or some of their public events.

MN don't have the option to have private boards, like facebook does for example, where you can have a private discussion with only those you have invited. If you look at some of the threads about the recent events in the middle east, there are ferocious discussions and differences of opinion, thats how it goes on an open forum.

pilates · 13/10/2023 07:40

There are certain posters who are infamous for their very strong critical views on William, Kate & Charles. There have been some dreadful things written about them too. Does it work both ways?

Roussette · 13/10/2023 07:43

I suppose the bottom line is... when you have 99.9999% of threads with negativity about Meghan, it's a small ask to have just one thread a bit more on the positive side. It almost feels like a safe space to come and post something nice about what she's wearing or what she's done, without getting continually jumped on. Because it is so tiring. That's what I think anyway!

FWIW... we tried to do this back in the day a few years ago. A series of threads. They continually got hijacked. Didn't work 😂

The thread about Kate and her clothes is positive. And not everyone writes 'dreadful things' about them.
They may criticise the function of the monarchy of course.

AuntieStella · 13/10/2023 08:00

There is no such thing as a safe space on MN, and long-standing posters know this. All we can do is post in the ways we each think are right, and ignore others

And to get back to something closer to the point of the thread, does anyone think Harry owns a pair of ostrich boots himself?

pinkmont · 13/10/2023 08:02

I don't get it, the only negatives on this thread were about some people loving her clothes, others not loving them. Maybe I have missed some other comments, but it is all just very superficial, 'I like her hairstyle - I don't like her hairstyle', 'I like what she is wearing - I don't like what she is wearing'. Perhaps I shouldn't have called the gold dress the 'hertz' dress , but it wasn't an insult towards her, but it appeared to really offended one of the posters who seemed to take it quite personally.

I don't believe MN offer any 'safe' places for discussion, especially in something as uncontroversial (to most) as Meghan or Kate style and when it does cross the line, posters report it and MN delete as necessary.

Gloriously · 13/10/2023 08:30

I think that some people politely gave their own personal balanced views of an outfit and one poster found this very objectionable because it didn’t align with their requirement that every comment on the thread seemingly needs to be positive.

Surely we can all agree to disagree to disagree on something as subjective as an outfit?
