Part 2 of a nice, unproblematic thread to discuss some of the fab outfits from the Duchess of Sussex, and some of the many great causes she (and Harry) and Archewell supports.

Axios:
Observance of World Mental Health Day has snowballed, with luminaries like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle throwing their weight behind what had been a low-key annual observance.

(Fact based account on the World Mental Health day festival with Project Healthy Minds and Archewell).

Love it! It's great to see this panel and World Mental Health Day getting lots of positive international coverage. Had no idea WMHD started in 1992.

We really have come so far with how we talk about mental health, even just a decade ago. I give a lot of applause to the current generation, who I feel have really been the driving force to cast off the shame of speaking of talking about all sorts of previously 'taboo' topics out loud and challenge all sorts of things. Children really are the future.

Thanks @MissElinorDashwood . It's a very big deal that the US Surgeon General was there as well.

It's obvious the toll the covid pandemic has caused on people's mental health and social isolation. Being chronically online is good for no one.

Gosh I remember when we got our first computer with Windows 1.0 and the dial up internet. My mum gave us a limit of how much time we could spend on it a day!

I love Meghan's neckline from the outfit the best, reminds me of the white dress style she wore to an event with Harry I thought she looked stunning at.

But from this I love her shoes and jewelry.

Working from home now my own stilts are gathering dust!

You’re welcome @queentim .
We were stuck in hospital again so I had far too much time on my hands…trying to pass time. The waiting never gets easier!

I watched the panel and I must say I was mightily impressed with the surgeon general. I’ve watched a few interviews of his before and heard a couple of podcasts so I was pleasantly surprised with his involvement. I’m hoping changes can be made on a policy level 🙏🏼.

Did you know the surgeon general lost 10 members of his family during covid? He speaks extensively about the impact of social media and its impact on mental health, particularly with the youth.

I confess we are very strict with our daughter. She won’t be getting a smart phone until she’s 16. My nieces and nephews all had/have similar restrictions.
My husband is an IT wizard so he teaches our parent group tips and tricks etc to help monitor and keep our children safe 🙏🏼.

I had no idea. That's incredibly devastating. I haven't watched the panel but I will! Can't even imagine the panel of parents going through that, but the platform and space they have to discuss this will be very powerful. I agree with you I hope it leads to policy change. I worry about people being opposed to it though, seeing how people already complain about "nanny states".

I can certainly understand why! Funny thing is my mum did the same, only got a phone when I hit 16, but then we were living in the world of flip phones, not connected to the internet and social medias only on the computers where we could be watched. Totally different world now. How lucky for you and the parent group !

I have a 4 year old niece, very proficient on the iPad. She only uses YouTube Kids but still watch her like a hawk when she's on it. It's terrifying.

Relatedly: Here is an update on the Archewell website about the event, and they just shared about 4 photos

"The Archewell Foundation Parents’ Summit: Mental Wellness in a Digital Age brought together parents who have experienced tragic loss, connected to their child’s social media use, for a discussion on building community and creating a safer online world for young people.

During an intimate conversation, these parents discussed how they are using their stories to inspire action and raise awareness of the dangers to young people’s mental health. The parents, whom The Archewell Foundation has engaged with over the past year, highlighted the strength and community they have found through a shared passion for creating meaningful change to prevent more families from this tragedy."

My DD would love that collegiate jacket

H and M is full of all this stuff.

I don't usually comment on clothes or fashion having absolutely no credibility in that area whatsoever. For me though the off the shoulder styles always look uncomfortable and I would be wanting to hitch them up all the time. Back in the day there were lots of hippy type tops with an elasticated off the shoulder look and I always felt the same about those.

The picture in the chair looks a bit odd and if M has been wrapped in a sheet. I think it must take a lot of confidence to wear that style. The standing shots look a lot better.

They both look odd in the chairs, because the seat of the chair is too low and they have to fold up too far in to them.

Perhaps it looked better IRL than in the photographs

Gloriously · 11/10/2023 20:02

Think you are correct that the chairs didn’t help. Looks better on these chairs but IMHO stands out as an overdressed, overcomplicated choice of outfit for this particular initiative as everyone else is relaxed in smart casuals.

Thank you @queentim daughter partially dislocated her collarbone 😭

She popped it back in herself! Thankfully no serious damage. Tissue/ligament damage and some physio needed.

mrsmingleton · 11/10/2023 20:47

Yes this one is a bit funny actually - it's like she is popping up naked from behind the chair. 😂

Recent studies have shown that social media can cause devastating mental health effects on our children, including increased rates of depression, anxiety, and self-harm.

97% of teens are online, and 66% of them say they regularly see hate-based content.

Our bills will:

  • Prohibit websites from collecting and sharing kids' personal data and location.
  • Limit addictive features of social media like algorithmic feeds.
•Empower my office to hold platforms accountable for breaking the law and endangering kids.

This legislation will help tackle the negative impacts social media has on our children and safeguard their privacy online.

GovKathyHochul, Sen_Gounardes, nily, and I are proud to help advance these commonsense measures to protect the next generation of New Yorkers.

Yes she is out step with everyone else in that room.

It looks like, you know Audrey from Little Shop of Horrors? That, but if Audrey was a chair.

pilates · 12/10/2023 07:29

I don't like the off the shoulder outfit.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 12/10/2023 09:09

Imagine if we left similar comments on a thread about Kate... people would lose their minds.

pilates · 12/10/2023 09:16

Don’t get upset it’s just people’s comments @Iwantcakeeveryday
I didn’t like Kate’s recent outfit - does that make you feel better?

Medlady · 12/10/2023 09:24

Had it been trousers and an off-the-shoulder cashmere sweater, it would have been more in tune with the rest of the room (And with Meghan’s best looks - luxe casual). Having a formal fitted jacket with that neckline is just too much I think
