The Duke and Duchess of Sussex at the Invictus Games 2023

Most of the Invictus threads seem to be filling up, or focused on fairly parochial issues, so I thought, now that Meghan is in Dusseldorf, I would lead us off with a general new thread about Harry and Meghan at Invictus 2023.

Some initial thoughts from me.

The UK tabloid narrative about how much Harry and Meghan are loathed globally is blown apart by the warm and rousing welcome they both received, both separately and together. So the UK tabloids have to dig deep to write eye-rollingly silly stories about Harry being "humiliated" because he did not score a goal during a fun, light-hearted TV appearance to promote the Games.

Invictus clearly means everything to Harry, and it is lovely to see Meghan supporting him, and to remember that it was at Invictus in Toronto that they first went public. The event must have such lovely memories for them both.

Favourite picture: Meghan with Glory Essien, the Nigerian athlete.

The Nigerians have really lit up the tournament. A Kenyan senator who met Harry last week posted on X that she would work on Kenya to be the next African team.

After everything in the last year, it's so lovely to see that Invictus is getting bigger, that Harry is as committed as he has always been to the Games he started, and that Meghan is there to support the veterans, and her husband.

Exactly @MrsMaxDeWinter

There wasn’t negative coverage of it, there was just coverage. Meghan looked happy, they reported that she was happy. Harry looked a bit bored, they reported that he looked a bit bored. They literally just reported what happened.

Meghan Markle throws shapes at first night of Beyonce's Renaissance world tour in California but Harry looks less impressed as he gazes at his phone as they celebrate mum Doria's 67th birthday ahead of the Duke's UK return

Meghan's jacket shit down the J.Crew website today. I do not care for the shorts look she always wears, but it works for her body type.

They both appear to be happy, in love and enjoying their time. Good for them!

Daisyislazy · 13/09/2023 20:11

It all been positive which is so nice to see

skullbabe · 13/09/2023 20:12

I think I like this style on her - both outfits suit her. Anyway so far so good as Harry’s plus one 🤣.

The jacket was 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽

Sadly probably out of my price range but I’ll check when the website is back!!

I did not like the shorts

Daisyislazy · 13/09/2023 20:18

I wish I had the legs for the shorts

onlylarkin · 13/09/2023 20:21

I don't typically shop J crew. But I liked the jacket.

I went to Old Navy today and spent $178.00 on 5 pieces. 😩I am so cheap, I hate spending thay much money. But I have lost a ton of weight. Sorry, I'll stop my life story.

Meghan, Harry, and the athletes all show us why this is important with every smile and tear we have seen.

Good for them!

Daisyislazy · 13/09/2023 20:21

Well done on the weight loss

The important thing is that the clothes make you feel good 😊

I really like Meghan’s style in general, especially the tans and nudes

Wakintoblueskies · 13/09/2023 20:29

if Harry is hanging on to their coat tails to improve his rep, well meh. He's done far worse.

Change the channel!

He was involved with Invictus since 2013! He’s not hanging onto anyone’s coat tails for positive PR.

Grow up FFS and take your negativity elsewhere!

Spectre8 · 13/09/2023 20:35

I love how now they are away from rf protocols they are so more natural becuase they can just truly be themselves and thats makes them more relatable.

YupIKnow · 13/09/2023 20:37

I have to say that I really don't like this baggy short look on her - she is looking very slender and her legs look very skinny right now. Love the colours though.

Lampzade · 13/09/2023 20:43

Love the meaning of the Nigerian names.
It is interesting that Harry’s name from Sesotho is ‘Warrior or Fighter. Very appropriate

YupIKnow · 13/09/2023 20:44

It's good for H and M that there is so much positive publicity currently. I keep on reading about the "relaunch" of Meghan as separate from Harry so imagine this is exactly where her agency want to see. Let's hope that they continue to build on this with a positive agenda.

The same as the old English name then.

I don't like it either but probably because I'm imagining myself in similar. I have skinny legs similar to Meghan, the rest not so! i would look like a big fat mint humbug on twigs

YupIKnow · 13/09/2023 20:59

She would look great though with tighter shorts on but realise not appropriate for the event.

The whole thing should be about the participants, not H and M. The focus is all wrong.

Absolutely.,Why is it always about them and how much publicity they are getting and how popular they are. It's a bit try hard

MamoruHisaishi · 13/09/2023 21:40

MrsMaxDeWinter · 13/09/2023 15:41

I said there is a tabloid UK narrative about how loathed they are globally.

All those endless"polls" about how they are not popular, etc. My point is that this simply is not true. they are not loathed globally, as Invictus shows. It's so transparent. Meghan and Harry are the only private citizens who are polled so extensively, and repeatedly, in the US media, and certainly, for the purposes of polling, UK tabloids appear to treat them as Royal Family members even as they moan that they are cashing in by still claiming to be members of the Royal family. My favourite recent one included one where people were asked whether Meghan "should be removed from the line of succession".

!!

As if she was even there. They added Kate, Camilla and Sophie, presumably for "balance" and must have been gutted when more people thought Camilla should be removed from the LOS than Meghan, never mind that she's not in it either!

Less reported are the polls like Lord Ashcroft's, who found that in 12 of the 14 realms, Harry and Meghan are believed over members of the family. In those countries the UK tabloids, and the Murdoch media, have no influence at all.

As for this from @themessygarden :

Sadly, it appears it didn't garner the interest of the general public or those outside of the military and the vets

I am not sure why this is sad: it has garnered the interests of those who matter the most, the participating veterans, the governments and military who are supporting their participation, the families of the veterans, the long term partners and sponsors, the volunteers from all over the world willing to be part of it, and the enthusiastic crowds who support the Games.

It's hardly Strictly Come Dancing or Love Island and was never going to be the kind of event that enthrals or titillates the general public.

But the fact that the Games are growing in size and scope, and are now truly global as all continents are now represented (Korea has just put in a bid to host) is a sign that this is very much a success, no matter how the "general public" might view it.

https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/news/2023-09-11/national/diplomacy/Korea-launches-bid-to-host-Invictus-Games/1866502

the invictus games don’t garner enough global attention though, as the heart of invictus failing to reach the top 10 of most watched Netflix series shows.

Also, that’s incredible that Harry and Meghan are more believed than other members of the royal family even though there’s been proof that they’ve lied not just in their interviews but in court.

Daisyislazy · 13/09/2023 22:01

Meghan is absolutely stunning in the picture where she is clapping and has her hair up

ThreeBearsPorridge · 13/09/2023 22:31

I wonder how the participants feel about all the focus being on H
and M rather than the event itself.

'The UK tabloid narrative about how much Harry and Meghan are loathed globally'

'The Duke and Duchess receive a rapturous welcome' The Daily Mail.

You seem to want to drive this negative narrative, the tabloids certainly aren't.

Granted there'll be crap on Twitter but that isn't 'the tabloids' is it.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12512917/Meghan-Markle-attends-Invictus-Games-event-Prince-Harry.html

The website, which has a lot of North American readers, has a totally different editorial policy - based purely on clickbait - than the far right propaganda tabloid rag that is sold from newsagents in Britain.

That really is not the case at all

Massive focus on the participants. This thread just happens to be about them but do pop over to this thread below. Lots of info and links from media all over the world about the participants

He does something worthwhile, shines his light on others and he gets acknowledgement for it.

The Games have been going since 2014. Harry has been ‘shining a light on others’ for quite a while now.

The games are getting bigger and there is something incredibly special about them. The veterans, the families - the little children looking full of joy and so proud of their parents. You can feel the goodwill.

Also @Iwantcakeeveryday I’ve been exercising too. Since I watched Heart of Invictus I’ve started exercising again also, challenging myself to do so, despite the pain, rather than being scared of exacerbating it.
