I think it's wrong to describe IV as "crucial" because it's reach is so small.
That is not to say the work is not important, but in the context of the difference it makes, it is helping very few (website says 235 in 2022 - I assume that's UK figure - and that that represents a substantial increase on previous years).
Compare that to the 66,000 helped by SSAFA every year (all conflicts, not just recent ones). Or the total number being treated by Combat Stress annually (over 2000). And contextualise by looking at the tens of thousands who served in Afghanistan and Iraq. Then think of those who have served (and been injured physically and mentally) elsewhere - eg Bosnia Kosovo, the Falkland Islands, Northern Ireland, Korea, Cyprus, Kenya
Also, the participants are selected not for greatest need amongst all veterans, but for ability/likelihood of benefit from those who put themselves forward in a limited number of sports/disciplines.
To be clear, I am not saying the Games do not matter and of course they are a Good Thing. But I do not think they should be built up into something beyond what they are.
