One again, William's neglecting women's football. The Lionesses made history. It is the first time that the English team (male or female) reached the World Cup final since 1966. We all know that if the men had reached the final, he would've been there and probably would've brought George with him.

Queen Letizia and her daughter Sofia will be attending. What's William's excuse? You are président of the Football Association.

This is really disappointing but I'm not really surprised. The young generation of royals are such a joke compared to previous generations. Yes, the Queen’s children had their controversies but when it comes to royal work, they always got the job done.

Prince William will not attend World Cup final to watch Lionesses

Prince William will be watching England's first final since 1966 on the television and will not fly to Australia to see the Lionesses compete, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

Where was he for the 2017 final then? England was in that, and it was played in Belfast.

Harry also attended at least two men’s World Cup Final matches before 2016 too - he’s a big rugby fan. Not of the women’s team though, it seems.

Almost as if following sports that are broadcast nationally doesn’t have to involve attending every single one in person.

How patronising. I’m surprised that your meticulous record keeping of my previous posts doesn’t include all the ones where I’ve talked about my love of football.

You deliberately excluded the word “fine” in order to mislead other posters about what I’d written.

“The full sentence you wrote “Anthony Albanese-ugh, fine.” “

That’s my quote taken from my last post to you. I did not exclude ‘fine’ as you have accused me of doing, neither deliberately or otherwise. As a result, your accusation that I was trying to mislead other posters is unfounded.

You suggested I scroll back and look, because you felt I had taken you out of context

So I did scroll back, and I copied and pasted the entire paragraph you had written, in order to remind you it was not out of context - doing so, at your suggestion, has now become my ‘meticulous record keeping’ of your posts. ?? That’s some pretzeling.

But it seems your posts are going to continue to accuse me of all sorts but can’t explain an ‘ugh.’

William is wrong footed in this. I don’t pay him. In that regard I could not care whether he went to the game or not. He does not work for me. But by not going, he’s indicating that he thinks women’s sports not as important as mens. This was moment to promote womens team sports as being as equally as important and as entertaining as mens sports and thus, should attract equal pay cheques. I’m scratching my head over the fact that the head of the FA did not understand this.

Nope, this is what you wrote:
@PrincessTigger you wrote ‘Anthony Albanese ugh’ when listing off who was present for the post game handshaking on the field. I read your and wondered why the ‘ugh’ in regards to the Aussie PM?
You tagged me in and deliberately missed off the word fine to suggest I had said the opposite of what I actually said. I do not appreciate it, please don’t do it again. A better way to engage is to reply to what you’re responding to, because tagging people with a misquote in the hopes other people will take it out of context and pile on them is really unkind.

That was never my intention. I do not mislead deliberately in order to to create a pile on. How could a question regarding your use of an negative expression re Australia’s PM, possibly create a pile on?

The only thing I responded to in your entire post was the ‘ugh’ in regards to Albanese, and I asked why you used it? As an Australian I wanted to know why you felt the Australian PM deserved an ‘ugh’ lol.

I’m way past wanting to know now, though. I’m completely done trying with trying to make sense of this.

Apparently now William's video message is being criticized as sexist. Will the laughs never end.

This weekend has been highly entertaining. Thank you all!

The Swedish royal family didn't attend but had a reception yesterday for the bronze medallist.
I agree William probably should have gone in his FA role but the sight of him supporting England in the semi final against Australia would not have gone down well. Completely highlights the absurdity of Australia having a foreign head of state who does not support our teams in sport.

Although there are always aeroplanes going everywhere, until the next pandemic, because human beings don't take too much notice of the warnings, it wasn't necessary for William or the queen of Spain or the Spanish football man to go for one match. They should all have stayed home. We are not in 1870. It's 2023. A message to Australia is easily made and delivered with modern technology. We can all support from afar.

This match has been just another example of hysteria and people jumping on bandwagons. Did the leaders of the Green party and the Lib Dems send their best wishes or did they miss the PR opportunity?

WinnieTheW0rm · 22/08/2023 07:49

AcesBaseballbat · 21/08/2023 13:52

The whole thing is just such a PR misfire.

Blaming his dad and lying that he's not allowed to visit Australia before Charles does (so how come Anne has made visits since Charles became King?).

William's tendency to grab his daughter and thrust her into the public eye any time he's mildly criticised is so gross and exploitative. So transparently a distraction technique.

It's not a PR misfire

It's a misfire of the very substance of the issue.

It's the president of the FA failing to turn up when England is playing in a World Cup final.

That's not something you can spin out of.

He has completely and utterly fucked up on this issue, to an extent that I think his role as President of the English FA is untenable.

There will of course be no comment, as per Palace policy. In the expectation that it will all blow over. But I think this one will be remembered for the sheer magnitude of the snub.

MrsFinkelstein · 22/08/2023 07:55

Roussette · 21/08/2023 21:09

She loves tennis and would want to be there.

William obviously loves watching football and had been at several England Women's training sessions, a d watched them at the Euros.

Why on earth would you think he doesn't enjoy football?

As an aside - the contortions are thoroughly entertaining, and looking at SM again this morning, the over exaggerated frothing is starting to have the opposite effect (as it usually does).

Roussette · 22/08/2023 08:03

I think this article is well worth a read. By those who think he should've been there and those that think his non attendance meant nothing. It's fairly measured.

It sums up the fine line the Royals tread, and really sums up my feelings too. As my first post on this thread said I really don't care whether he went to the football or not. It's what it looks like and how on earth this wasn't predicted

@MrsFinkelstein I will answer. Where on earth have I said he doesn't enjoy football.
You are making that up about my post. Please don't do that.

I was talking about Kate. Not William

asterdaisy · 22/08/2023 08:29

@Roussette the twisting of peoples words has happened a few times in this thread and always seems to happen when people are trying to defend the indefensible. In this case the president of the FA skipping the final the countries team were playing in.
There are some things that can't be spinners. This is one of them. The colonialist tour was another. Although I am fascinated by the attempts to try to spin them. It nearly always includes lies as it did this time.

If he didn't go, he should have, absolutely. So should the Queen when she was patron. I tried to find any info about either of them going to any rugby women's WC when they were patrons( they no longer refer to it as the women's WC ) and cannot find any info so it seems neither of them, as patron, did. In 2014, when the Queen was patron, Harry was on a royal tour but the Queen, as far as I can see, didn't go either. So the one WC he was patron, he didn't attend. Kate has been Patron since Harry left, and did not attend the last WC in NZ- but some lovely puff pieces said she was so dedicated she got up early to watch. I wonder if she is booked to go to the upcoming men's one.

I think this supports my thoughts that none of them should be patrons or Presidents of sports organisations because it doesn't seem like they want/can make the time to be as dedicated as they should be, especially to the women's teams.

Thank you, yes. I bristled because I really meant that Kate will go lots to Wimbledon, not only is she Patron so has an obligation, but she loves the game, she plays tennis, has tennis courts at Amner and other royal estates. She has even talked of queueing for Wimbledon tickets, as I have done. But I'm too old for 5am queueing now! I rely on the public ballot, which means I rarely go.

Novella4 · 22/08/2023 09:13

I’m just catching up but @Serenster your post is the funniest attempted defence of the scroungers ( Windsors) I think I’ve ever read !

“ even that article says William was practising takeoff and landings - something he’d be doing anyway, he just chose to do it in the Middleton’s back garden.”

Serenster · 22/08/2023 09:16

In this case the president of the FA skipping the final the countries team were playing in.

It is not, I’m afraid, a self-evident truth that the president of the FA skipping this game has made his role untenable. It’s a position his detractors are shouting for, certainly, but that doesn’t actually make it true. No matter what you, I, or the many bandwagon jumpers may say, that’s a decision for the FA alone and they seem perfectly happy with their president. And they will know best how committed he is.

asterdaisy · 22/08/2023 09:16

@Iwantcakeeveryday thanks for that post. I hadn't realised they routinely did not attend finals our country is competing in and where they are patrons. So it's just a meangless title then.

asterdaisy · 22/08/2023 09:17

@Serenster I dare you. Quote me saying it has made his position untenable. You can't. I have never said that.

Morestrangerthings1 · 22/08/2023 09:19

What has surprised me about the criticism re William not making it to the women’s final is that, in Australia , the criticism has come from all sides. Conservative news sources, more left leaning ones, morning talk shows, radio etc., are critical of William not showing up.

And Queen Letitia is very popular in Australia now.

Like many others I think William dropped the ball on this one (excuse the bad pun).. In Australia, the people have been primed for the Womens World Cup.

Sam Kerr, captain of the Matildas (who also plays for Chelsea) carried the Australian Flag into the Coronation with the GG and his wife, and the PM and his wife, following Sam in. Sam looked so cool. She’s got a long stride for a small person and didn’t muck around. She would have tested the fitness levels of our ‘high and not so mighty’.

The Australian federal government’s PR machine was on the ball (whoops) with this. William’s PR team let him down. In retrospect. Heads may be rolling as we type. This is Sam Kerr with flag.

Sam Kerr with flag looking very cool

In other news, according the The Express, or another rag of similar low calibre, William will not speak to Harry later in September when Harry is in town, but Charles had delayed a trip to France in order to see his son, but William is so cranky about it that Charles’ trip to France is back on schedule, and neither William nor Charles will speak to Harry when he comes - not that Harry has even requested it. Essentially a story about ‘nothing happened’ Talk about made up bullshit.

Yes. Meaningless titles, where different titles are used for the same role, that are used by them as evidence they 'work' for the money and privileges they are given. The Queen set the precedent as patron of England rugby, which she did fuck all for. If all they do is send messages of support, they can and should do that anyway, so being patron or president is meaningless. Truly meaningless.
