One again, William's neglecting women's football. The Lionesses made history. It is the first time that the English team (male or female) reached the World Cup final since 1966. We all know that if the men had reached the final, he would've been there and probably would've brought George with him.

Queen Letizia and her daughter Sofia will be attending. What's William's excuse? You are président of the Football Association.

This is really disappointing but I'm not really surprised. The young generation of royals are such a joke compared to previous generations. Yes, the Queen’s children had their controversies but when it comes to royal work, they always got the job done.

Prince William will not attend World Cup final to watch Lionesses

Prince William will be watching England's first final since 1966 on the television and will not fly to Australia to see the Lionesses compete, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

He may well be funded in part by my taxes. I am sure many of these ventures received covid dollars. But I don't care or try to guess about his value or how many hours he's clocking

You are more than welcome to submit a FOIA request for information of the the use of COVID funds released to businesses by your government. British taxpayers have no such freedoms when it comes to the Royal Family. And are unable to assess whether there are reviving back for their buck so to speak - rights which are happily enjoyed in your country to assess people who are paid for with public money.

Regardless - this is about a Royal Family member’s role as President of the FA which is unpaid. And why in that role he did not attend a women’s World Cup final in which his team was playing. And although many are minimising the importance of this - football mania is inescapable in this country, there is no two ways about it and it would be inconceivable in the men’s game for the President to not attend. I’ve noticed one excuse was simply that he said that wasn’t going to be able to attend earlier in the summer - this is not acceptable. He should have found a way. If it was important to him.

There are quite a few points one could address here.

It seems it's not so inconceivable given William missed the FA cup for a family wedding. So there are valid reasons for the FA president to miss important games sometimes. It doesn't make him less committed. It doesn't reflect on his commitment.

I am even less understanding of your position since you say the role is unpaid.

AliceOlive · 21/08/2023 19:45

Gotcha @Samcro

skullbabe · 21/08/2023 19:47

Quite a few wouldn't even be aware of this if it didn't involve William.

It’s like death by a thousand sexist cuts. No one really cares about this - people are just being silly, isn’t it amazing how many people on the royal boards watch got all - they really can’t be interested in the women’s game, it shouldn’t matter to you that the President didn’t think it important enough to schedule into his diary, the Spanish president was a letch and there were too many people on the podium - silly people wanting the President of the English FA to be there representing us, and finally all of you complaining about the non attendance of the highest representative of the organisation under which you play to represent your country which would help cement the legitimacy of the hard work of these players and establish them as equal in needing representation to the men are actually taking from their win.

Yep - you got it.

I’ll say it again - he should have gone. His reputation has taken a pasting. He’ll need to work hard to gain it back.

Gotcha @Samcro

??

Roussette · 21/08/2023 19:52

Why do we have all this about he might have had something on? I have a commitment on a particular date in September 2024... nothing, but nothing, would stop me being there.
Why do we treat William like he is so useless he is incapable of keeping a diary, of making a commitment... FFS he has a huge team of staff to back him up! Talking like this does him no favours whatsoever

AliceOlive · 21/08/2023 19:53

I mean I understand your last post.

Ok, so if we don't agree we are sexist.

skullbabe · 21/08/2023 19:54

Anyway will leave you all to it.

Off to sign the petition to get Mary Earps’ kit made by Nike. Yet another sexist misstep.

Yes women can be misogynistic- I know it’s shocking.

Samcro · 21/08/2023 17:06

didn’t William go to the states to present an award, or did I dream that?

It's in the diary the only future event btw before the end of September - look for yourself. No doubt some KP lackey on overtime will say most don't go in for "security reasons".

Ok, so if we don't agree we are sexist.

There was an attempt to discuss misogyny & the history of women’s football earlier in the thread but nobody was particularly interested back then! As a side note, it’s so dumb that this has become some people’s test of commitment to women’s sport - one single game. They won’t be interested a week from now.

It is the obvious conclusion to what lots of Williams supporters are arguing.

I do think monarchists if they really care about the future of the institution rather than their own feelings forged in the bosom of Queen Elizabeth need to address William's structural issues in his inherent laziness and lack of care for the role. Deflection, whataboutery and condemnation of disingenuous republicans making hay doesn't cut it on this occasion. He needs some tough love from that cohort and sharpish or the rot will go further. The British people aren't stupid it's not unconditional love for the vast majority of their subjects.

Honestly, I am absolutely floored at the moment by another poster calling me misogynistic.

Anyway looking forward to the Lionesses coming home - hopefully we’ll have a celebration. Maybe the President of the FA can host them with a summer welcome home party?

and gongs for all I am expecting that will be part of the damage limitation action programme. A tour of the palace, kick about in the garden gongs and canapes will buy them most of them off, I'm sure. OBE's for the team CBE for the coach.

AliceOlive · 21/08/2023 19:19

Well, yes. And guessing at William's is also.

This is all a bit like people in the US who tell the public servants "I pay your salary".

@AliceOlive

It is not all like your public servants in the USA

  1. public servants work . Royals do next to nothing
  2. public servants are subject to the law . Royals are not subject to the law .
  3. public servants pay tax. Royals do not follow tax law - they decide how much/ little they care to part with( and this is recent and only as a result of public pressure ) and they do not pay inheritance tax etc
I could go on but I do wonder why you are so invested in the ‘royals’ of a foreign country . I know you said you find it entertaining and I get that . But we here are seeing our standard of living fall weekly and so called ‘ royals’ awarding themselves a 45% pay increase We have to guess at the extra costs which are kept secret . People were arrested merely for holding up a sign in protest at the imposition of Charles . Its not so entertaining when you are living it

So... just say there are posters on here that know everything about football, their kids play it, they have a favourite team they support and attend matches, and they are pissed off W didn't go... is that OK.

It's nothing to do with knowledge of football is it. It's about a Royal, a President of the FA not attending a World Cup final. Why does anyone have to be a football expert to find it a bit off.

I think it’s also that it’s a woman’s sport- this time it was football- goes underecognised yet again. This could be any woman’s sport. But today it’s the football. Going under recognised, and under appreciated, by William - the president of the FA. William is the one out of step on this one.

I’m not interested in any team sport really. But I appreciate there are people who are - eg just about my whole family - but I’m tired of all the women’s sports not getting the recognition and pay cheques all deserve. It’s been proven once and for all, female football can draw big crowds - in fact, the biggest.

@PrincessTigger you wrote ‘Anthony Albanese ugh’ when listing off who was present for the post game handshaking on the field. I read your and wondered why the ‘ugh’ in regards to the Aussie PM?

Actually I didn’t and I don’t appreciate it when you take me out of context. For anybody who cba to scroll I put “ugh, fine” as in “considering, yes that’s ok”. Quite different, I hope you agree!

upinaballoon · 21/08/2023 20:23

"As for Geoff Hurst, he's always bashing gums. That's what he does for a living these days."

On the Today programme this morning I happened to catch the interviewer - Nick Robinson I think - asking GH about the match or whatever, and then he threw in the question about whether William should have gone but I can't remember whether Nick R said 'William' or 'a member of the RF'. At the time I did wonder 1. if GH had said off-air that he wanted to get at PW for not going and NR obliged, or 2. if NR is a republican or just a stirrer who decided to ask the question or 3. if the producer today is a republican who wants to diss the RF at every opportunity and told NR to ask the question.

If you say I have a cynical or sceptical streak about me, I can live with that thought.

Roussette · 21/08/2023 18:45

I've never heard or read that. Happy to see a link and learn about it.

I've never known criticism for using BA

I lived near Nirwich Airport at the time. The furore wasn't about that at all. It was because an empty plane had to be flown to Norwich airport to fly them to Aberdeen Airport, just after Meghan and Harry had been criticised for flying by private jet. So they had an rooty plane grown to a tiny airport just so that William could get one over on his brother.

AliceOlive · 21/08/2023 20:29

It’s ridiculous when people think everything William does is to get at Harry.

Harry’s obviously badly hurt over many things regarding his relationship with his brother going back decades based on the things he wrote in Spare. Not being included at school, not being invited to dinner enough once married. Constant comparisons and the lesser role not just of a younger brother but of not being the primary heir. It’s legitimately sad and understandable.

But no evidence that his brother spent that much time competing with him at all. I think that is part of the hurt - not being seen as an equal.

I think this quote was designed to humiliate me and an attempt to silence disagreement.

I learn new things about posters here all the time. I’ll take it as evidence that this is someone undeserving of any more attention or respect from me.

I don’t think brothers being competitive is weird but assuming EVERYTHING is a competition is not very likely

AliceOlive · 21/08/2023 20:41

@PrincessTigger Agree with you.

I didn’t see much evidence in the excerpts from Spare that William spent much time competing with Harry, though.
