One again, William's neglecting women's football. The Lionesses made history. It is the first time that the English team (male or female) reached the World Cup final since 1966. We all know that if the men had reached the final, he would've been there and probably would've brought George with him.

Queen Letizia and her daughter Sofia will be attending. What's William's excuse? You are président of the Football Association.

This is really disappointing but I'm not really surprised. The young generation of royals are such a joke compared to previous generations. Yes, the Queen’s children had their controversies but when it comes to royal work, they always got the job done.

Prince William will not attend World Cup final to watch Lionesses

Prince William will be watching England's first final since 1966 on the television and will not fly to Australia to see the Lionesses compete, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

I don’t, therefore I do not try to guess if they are being productive just for the sake of criticizing them.

Nor do I call anyone else lazy just because I don’t know what they do all day. Or jump to conclusions about the appropriateness of the salary they draw.

Salary? I bit more than that I would say!

The Royal Family are subsidised by taxpayers. We should be able to ask about their workload.

Serenster · 21/08/2023 18:45

I don't know why he could not have flown commercial. What a great message that would've given out.

I imagine he’ll fly commercial to Singapore for the Earthshot Awards - he did last year to travel to Boston. I really can’t imagine anyone here saying what a great message that is if he does so again though…🤣

Yes I agree with you. Environmental reasons would have merit if he didn't live the life he leads, take lots of flights elsewhere, including helicopters, and have 3 homes. It's not a consistent position.

I honestly don't think it's an appropriate position for him and I would expect any Pres of the FA to be in attendance during the Wc.

He’s never made the argument against transport or international travel though, that’s a misunderstanding of his position. Earthshot is about developing high tech solutions for energy and waste. And he promotes responsibility.

The royals have to be seen out and about but they are also doing more virtually. They have also announced they are changing the ways they will be doing tours and there are likely to be less. So at no point have they promised to burn zero fuel, but they are looking towards having a net zero impact. It takes time though!

In addition picking and choosing engagements doesn’t mean NONE can be overseas, it means that eg this one was clearly outweighed by the negatives including environmental.

And re helicopters the answer is “it depends”. The helicopter he uses is relatively fuel efficient however 1 helicopter uses more energy than 1 car per hour. However, firstly on the ground he often has to travel in a convoy with security so it’s not 1 helicopter vs 1 car. Also helicopters can go in straight lines and are not stop-starting in traffic through central London. So you are not necessarily wrong but it’s also not a gotcha. The answer is “it depends”.

skullbabe · 21/08/2023 18:45

Confirmation bias at work.

Novella already said she doesn’t watch football.

Hmm - I’m confused. I was talking about how to an American ear Geoff’s statement would not be taken as critical but absolutely would be if you were British. No sure what is confirmatory about this but hey ho.

I watch football as I’ve said but I must admit I don’t know what the mission statement of the FA. I would be interested especially as it to relates as to why the President of the English FA was not present at a World Cup final.

It was said they were giving press to one airline over others.

I've never heard or read that. Happy to see a link and learn about it.

I've never known criticism for using BA

If I know about it when it happens, I would say so.

It was here. I am not digging it up. Doesn't matter who believes me.

I’m not convinced you actually know what he does on a day-to-day basis.

so what does he do? How many hours a day does he work?

Roussette · 21/08/2023 18:49

The helicopter he uses is relatively fuel efficient however 1 helicopter uses more energy than 1 car per hour.

A bit of an understatement there!

A helicopter produces approximately 950 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per hour; the average car produces 22 pounds per hour.

Are you talking about media criticism or MN posters? If the latter, I am not expecting you to dig it out, nor am I doubting you... but if it is that, it's just opinion on here isn't it...

The problem with all this PW hoohah is that it has detracted from the women's great achievement. And that's why I keep saying that you wouldn't be going on about it if you cared about football. The actual players couldn't have cared less about PW. They're focused professional sports people The award ceremony was a bloody farce with too many people on the podium and Letizia acting like a blooming diva. It is a shame that William couldn't have gone because he handles these occasions perfectly.
As for Geoff Hurst he's always bashing gums. That's what he does for a living these days,

Serenster · 21/08/2023 18:51

How many hours a day does he work?

You tell us - you are the one convinced it’s very low.

Serenster · 21/08/2023 18:53

The only criticism I recall, quite rightly, was them flying on Flybe... and to enable that, an empty plane had to be sent to them, thereby completely destroying the idea they were saving the planet by flying commercial ! That was an embarrassing faux pas

Flybe confirmed that the Wales’s had absolutely no knowledge of what had happened behind the scenes, so that’s not on them.

The Royal Family are subsidised by taxpayers. We should be able to ask about their workload.

Where is someone asking? They are assuming that because he didn't go to a game, he doesn't do his job as the FA president. Without knowing the purpose of the organization, his role and what he does. For many, no public appearances means not working.

I mentioned salary because here we have his brother taking a massive salary from an organization while people working there are being laid off. That's the American way, of course. Yet, I didn't jump to guess that he's doing nothing and doesn't deserve the pay. Not interested in digging into their tax status, government grants they may have received. I am sure I could jump through hoops to find ways to judge if I was so inclined.

asterdaisy · 21/08/2023 18:55

@Serenster we know the reason. It is the annual extended family get together at balmoral. This has been mentioned in the press at least a few months ago.
The question is whether an annual two week extended family get together to hunt, play board games and socialise is a good enough reason not to take a bit of time out of that holiday.

Imagine thinking the presence of one man was more important than what these women achieved? Or that his absence somehow makes it less important?

And in fact, maybe he just figured no one would give a shit if he was there or not. Because they shouldn't!

asterdaisy · 21/08/2023 18:58

We are not even saying William should attend every cup final. Only the ones britain is competing in. Which let's face it is hardly a packed schedule of events.

Samcro · 21/08/2023 18:48

I am not the one concerned with it and making judgements about it.
If one is going to do that, they should have facts.

Roussette · 21/08/2023 19:00

@AliceOlive
I don't understand your post or who you are talking about

skullbabe · 21/08/2023 19:00

By the way the job of the President of the FA is not actually just to watch football… he doesn’t go to every national game or final. That would be impossible!

The expectation is not that the President attend every national game but definitely attend every final if the team is in it. Literally the next men’s Euros next year, women’s Euros 2025, men’s World Cup 2026, the next women’s World Cup 2027 - that is one (potential) commitment a year. Hardly onerous.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 21/08/2023 19:01

Nobody has said Williams non-attendance is more important than the woman's achievements. Address what people are actually saying instead of attributing sentiments nobody has expressed. I can't believe the defensiveness.

There's no such thing as the British football team. I despair

Thank you. Yes. Not one person is doing down their achievement, not one little bit. Quite the opposite
