One again, William's neglecting women's football. The Lionesses made history. It is the first time that the English team (male or female) reached the World Cup final since 1966. We all know that if the men had reached the final, he would've been there and probably would've brought George with him.

Queen Letizia and her daughter Sofia will be attending. What's William's excuse? You are président of the Football Association.

This is really disappointing but I'm not really surprised. The young generation of royals are such a joke compared to previous generations. Yes, the Queen’s children had their controversies but when it comes to royal work, they always got the job done.

Prince William will not attend World Cup final to watch Lionesses

Prince William will be watching England's first final since 1966 on the television and will not fly to Australia to see the Lionesses compete, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

@Serenster

well you’ve just confirmed that Willy is afraid of being booed by a non curated crowd.

There is no ‘commitment ‘ or they’d have said so to try to put out this PR bin fire

The Football Association need a new president .

derxa · 20/08/2023 13:48

The Football Association need a new president . Are you English and interested in football? I doubt it.

Please link to scandal of any sort about Queen Letizia. There isn't any. Ditto King Felipe.

Of course there are. No public figure with a vociferous group of people who will find fault with whatever they do can escape that.

There’s a reason why Letizia no longer wears her engagement ring, for example (it was paid for by Felipe’s brother in law, the one’s who now in jail). She had a public argument with her mother in-law too. And sent supportive texts to her “yoga mate” who was a banker involved in a fraud. None of those went down well in Spain.

A bit like Charles accepting suitcases of cash from dodgy Saudi billionnaires, Prince Williams godfather and mentor to Charles getting a 14 year old pregnant, Andrew inviting his child sex trafficking friends to sit on Thrones at Buckingham Palace and to shooting weekends at Balmoral, Andrew again selling his house at a loss to a dodgy Kazakh bilionnaire as a suspected money laundering enterprise, The Queen demanding changes to legislation before it goes to Parliament so that they can get exemptions for themselves from equality and environmental obligations, Edward VIII being an actual traitor, and that's all we know about. Who knows what secrets their wills hold? They can kerp them secret for 100 years. Our Royals may not be as dodgy as Juan Carlos, but there are plenty they try to cover up aided and abetted by the press.

Why do you persist with the idea that anyone posting here can't possibly be a football fan? It's possible to be interested in more than one thing, you know...

Why? I think Prince William had basically adopted the most sensible PR tactic of all here: issue his statement (“I won’t be there”), issue a video message of support with Charlotte (exactly the same thing he did last year before the Euros) and now send commiserations to the s and otherwise not in engage at all in the bonfire,as you describe it.

It was stoked up by the press and twitter in the silly season before a big game. The fact he’s not engaged with it all shows quite clearly that he’s not chasing a good news story, he and his PR team obviously feel the better course of action is to just ride it out. They well know there’s be another story along in a few days, and presumably also feel that they have nothing more to say than they already have. Acting defensive won’t help things.

It was the right decision (if he was more worried about optics than being sensible that would be more alarming!)

AnnunciataZ · 20/08/2023 13:54

@Angrycat2768 I read your opening sentence there far too quickly and had to pause for a moment to wonder which teenager Charles impregnated!!!

Serenster · 20/08/2023 13:57

I do apologise if you find my post was condescending.

Thanks you, Roussette.

derxa · 20/08/2023 13:38

Queen Letizia is certainly milking this. I thought she was going to stand in the middle holding the trophy.

So did I! I think it looked like she wanted to do it. I thought Infanta Sofia was going to give one of the players that giant Spanish flag she was holding, but she seemed to just cling onto it!

Novella4 · 20/08/2023 14:02

Woeful episode .

Serenster · 20/08/2023 13:38

He didn’t go because :

Hes lazy
Hes misogynistic
Hes afraid of being booed

Take your pick

Or, he had other commitments which meant a short-notice trip to the other side of the world was not feasible.

And given the CEO of the FA has publicly stated that William told them all long before the tournament started that he wouldn’t be able to make the final if they were in it, the option you deliberately didn’t mention looks the most likely.

Wouldn't William really need to be invited by the Australian Govt (as they'd be providing Security for him), plus as his father is de facto Head of State would that be an issue as the Aus Govt haven't yet invited Charles to visit?

Honestly asking a question - it's just I know that protocols have to be followed and visiting a Commonwealth country is different to just visiting a non-CW country for the BRF.

Actual facts never seem to get in the way of putting the boot in to the RF

The reasons change on a daily basis and are never actually consistent but that doesn't seem to matter.

Yes, let's get the Spanish RF in - heads would actually explode if our RF had even a smidgen of the scandals the Spaniards have had 🤣

Andrew Epstein, Fergie one scandal after another, Charles, Sophie, only Edward and Anne escape.

They're all fallible

AliceOlive · 20/08/2023 14:17

QueenOfHertz · 20/08/2023 12:46

Well, that was Willy’s fault they lost. If he’d been there they would have won.

100%

QueenOfHertz · 20/08/2023 14:27

Did anyone else see Harry in the crowd? #plotthickens

"No - it’s because they can’t control the crowds and media in Australia. He’d be booed".

I'm sure he would. The Australian fans booed the English Lionesses while they were playing.

Such good sports.

Just Lovely.

How does Anne escape? She’s the only one of them that actually has a criminal conviction.

If Andrew, Harry, William or Charles’ out of control dog had bitten children and killed one of the Queen’s corgis it wouldn’t be remotely as forgotten as Anne’s shit dog owning has been.

It is nowhere near as simple as some are making out. There are indeed protocols - anywhere else and he could fly in and fly out, as the Spanish royals can easily do in Australia, but that wouldn’t be as easy in a commonwealth country.

What if the Men's world Cup was being held in a Commonwealth country? If his position makes it difficult for him to do even the most basic duties as President, he needs to give it up.

She didn't- not in the 80s & 90s.

I'm old enough to remember the tabloids having a ball with negative story after short about Anne.

She didn't give a toss and just kept her head down. It's only in recent years her press gotten overwhelmingly positive.

This will be regarded as a pivotal moment when we look back at the fall of the House of Windsor it is a contemporaneous flag down moment like Diana in its own way and plenty of arch royalist media such as the Telegraph I quoted up thread have made that connection. The rebooted uber emotional Brits want their blood from the dancing Royal dog and pony show and as you say it won't be forgotten. If they are not front and centre at national 'moments' what the hell are they for. Well done William I will chalk that up as win on the long march to the Republic.

Novella4 · 20/08/2023 15:43

@YetMoreNewBeginnings

Nonsense .

The made up rubbish that makes up ‘protocol’ only applies to state visits .

Willy as the (useless) president of the football Association is free to represent the association wherever he wants .

Only he doesn’t want to, does he?

Novella4 · 20/08/2023 15:47

Wonderfully put @vera99 .

Maybe the conspiracy theory is true and Willy is crashing the monarchy , one tone deaf episode at a time ?

It’s not remotely nonsense at all.

British royals going to a commonwealth country have protocols they have to follow.

She gets away with it on here.

In fact on repeated threads she’s touted as the best of the bunch.

Which just shows that people are either incredibly fickle or don’t actually look at facts about them before declaring that she should take Charles’ place

The problem would be exactly the same men’s or women’s.
