One again, William's neglecting women's football. The Lionesses made history. It is the first time that the English team (male or female) reached the World Cup final since 1966. We all know that if the men had reached the final, he would've been there and probably would've brought George with him.

Queen Letizia and her daughter Sofia will be attending. What's William's excuse? You are président of the Football Association.

This is really disappointing but I'm not really surprised. The young generation of royals are such a joke compared to previous generations. Yes, the Queen’s children had their controversies but when it comes to royal work, they always got the job done.

Prince William will not attend World Cup final to watch Lionesses

Prince William will be watching England's first final since 1966 on the television and will not fly to Australia to see the Lionesses compete, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

Well that confirms it

Roussette · 20/08/2023 09:41

@PrincessTigger
I did the journey last year and that was not remotely like my experience and I'm nearly three decades older than William!
Course he'd cope.

Hippyhippybake · 20/08/2023 09:45

Australia is very welcome to become a republic, it’s entirely up to them.

Novella4 · 20/08/2023 09:47

@Hippyhippybake

Thats big of you !
and the rest btw

I suspect that Australia will become a republic very soon, the last vote that they had was very close.

Hippyhippybake · 20/08/2023 09:48

It’s nothing to do with me - it’s up to Australia, that’s the point!

Another thread on this zzzz

Some people just cannot accept that not everyone HAS to support women’s football

Well the Head of the Football Association should attend.

Hippyhippybake · 20/08/2023 09:49

Not sure 55/45 is that “close”.

Imagine this:

William travels 24 hours to Australia. He doesn’t have time to get over jet lag. He falls asleep during the match. He flies home for another 24 hours.

Oh, I clutched my pearls so hard the string snapped.

Imagine this:
A year ago, some, or even just one, of Williams 20 strong PR team says to William ' The Lionesses are European Champions, The World Cup is in Australia next year. You are President of the FA. It would be great for women's football and your image if you spent 2 weeks of your 3 month holiday in Australia (Especially as your Dad is King of Australia) taking the kids to see all the sites, and then turn up to the England matches. You never know, they could even get to the finals! But even if they don't, we would have tons of photos of you in Australia for later PR.' They go on holiday all the time without us knowing.

Nono22972 · 20/08/2023 09:52

If Harry was the president of the FA we'd be up to thread 3 on this and posters would be falling over themselves to say how terrible he was for not going to Oz to support our Lionesses!

Well, if Harry was president of the FA, that'd mean he'd still be a working royal meaning The Oprah interview, the Netflix show and the book would've never happened and the constant hate he's getting today wouldn't be as big

I would laugh so much if Harry did turn up. But unlikely since he needs to be in Germany this week, it would be fabulous to see how the papers who’ve been slagging off William for not going to Australia would spin it as a negative that Harry went.

It would be disingenuous. We know that Harry is more of a rugby fan than football fan, especially since he, himself, has never shown interest to women's football in the past.
Yes, that would be funny but showing up just after it was announced that your brother was not going would just look like a way to stick it to your brother.
But, maybe a big humiliation is exactly what he needs because he's been called workshy and lazy for more than 10 years and he (and Kate) are completely unfazed and refuse to work more

"‘They are buying something’: the cash, gifts and arms cementing the Qatari-UK relationship | Qatar | The Guardian" https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2022/nov/17/they-are-buying-something-the-cash-gifts-and-arms-cementing-the-qatari-uk-relationship

The royal family have received many priceless gifts from the middle east. The UK government and us have benefited from Arab largesse.

The royals are very chummy with the house of Saud, Charles and Andrew in particular but all have benefited from that particularly bit of royal billionaire chumocracy.

The royals don't operate outside politics, there are many examples of them using their influence to lobby politically in their own interests (especially on land and wealth issues).

But suddenly, turning up for women's football causes a crisis of conscious, breach of sacred holidays etc.

LimeCheesecake · 20/08/2023 09:56

Or @Angrycat2768 - just Monday morning, someone pulled him to one side and said “it would look great if you were there, the Spanish are sending members of the Royal family. We could get you on a flight on Wednesday or Thursday so you can get footage with the lionesses training on Friday. Hunker down in a hotel for the rest of the time to avoid it being seen as Royal visit, but if they win it will be amazing publicity for you to be there. We can square it off as not Royal as you are going to represent the English FA not your dad.”

Honestly shocked no one did this, or maybe they did and it all sounded like hard work.

he literally would only go for 24 hours /just the game if he ignored the whole thing until the phone ins and news paper articles started mid week.

Novella4 · 20/08/2023 09:58

The ‘royals’ really missed a trick when Elizabeth died .

The truly magnanimous thing to do would have been to close up shop on the whole scam.
The last century in the UK esp Elizabeth’s reign was really about the Saxe - Colberg - Gothas ( whatever their real name was) filling their boots before they met the fate of their cousins .

Instead we had the light shone on the Coronation and it looked tawdry and ridiculous. Panicked authorities arresting peaceful co operative protesters spoke volumes about the fear the royals have of the truth .

Instead now we have the managed decline of ‘royals’ with a string of male stale pale ‘royals’ imposed on us.
We are constantly told in paid for polls that Willy is popular. He isn’t .
Charles has more about him than Willy in terms of warmth and personality.
Willy doesn’t have the personality for the role and must know it . He clearly isn’t interested in people .

If the so called ‘emergency meeting’ isn’t about this then they are more stupid than I thought

I'm not quite sure why William couldn't have gone on the same jet as the Spanish Royals. A good bit of friendly rivalry between the Euro Royals. It would have been PR gold! There are so many solutions- even putting a screen at Windsor Castle as a bare minimum. I think the only reason is that no one could be bothered to think about it until the last minute. They couldnt even think that maybe getting George to sit in on the video would be good. Otherwise, it looks like mens football for the boys, womens sports for the girls. William's summer holiday is sacred, despite it lasting for a quarter of the year.

Agree. I'm close to William's age and this hasn't been my experience on my numerous trips down under either.

RovenderKitt · 20/08/2023 09:37

@LimeCheesecake quite. The president of the FA isn’t going to the World Cup Final, that’s how important women’s football is to them.

Exactly. This is the plain truth of it and all the burbling about jet lag etc is a lame excuse to cover up his lack of interest. Very bad show indeed, clearly the FA president couldn’t give a stuff. So disappointed in him.

LimeCheesecake · 20/08/2023 10:19

Oh god going on the Spanish flight! You need a job doing their PR, that would have been so good- no way to slag him off on a climate point of view, the Spanish were going either way so sharing a flight and security costs is just sensible. They’d get great plane photo ops.

plus European cooperation.

@Angrycat2768 I hope you work in marketing.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 20/08/2023 10:20

It's definitely nothing to do with jet lag, I am sure William is well used to that and has access to things sportsmen and women do in particular, to limit it. I don't get it much, I take something on the flight to sleep and drink electrolyte drinks- not water- and barely feel it.

Lol I don't. That's why I thought it would be obvious to someone who did! I suspect it is the case that they do what they like and expect the PR people to cover for them when they get criticised for it, rather than be proactive and give them advice!

That would have been a cracking idea and invited the great and the good and NHS workers and the like to share the moment with the BBC etc covering it. Great PR and seen to be doing his 'job' of capturing the national mood. If it was a men's world cup final he would have been there hell or high water I'm pretty certain of that. The Telegraph headline basically says that – “Prince of Wales on pressure to interrupt holiday…..they’re letting everyone know he is just refusing to stop his vacation which is probably killing birds up in Scotland.

I'm going to support Spain as a protest- "Up the Red Fury"

derxa · 20/08/2023 10:35

It's the hypocrisy on here I can't stand. MN as a rule hates football Also when any royal supports a sporting activity it's criticised. Kate goes to Wimbledon - how dare she. Kate has a knockabout with Emma Raducanu - how dare she. Anne flies to Italy to support the Scottish rugby team - how dare she. Zara does well at three day eventing - oh it's only because she's well off.
Most of you wouldn't recognise any of the England Women's team.

PatientZorro · 20/08/2023 10:41

Rather unfortunate that he is also the president of the FA @derxa - in that position he might have taken an interest don’t you think?

vera99 · 20/08/2023 10:41

Thinking about November 2, 2019, when Prince Harry got on the plane to the other side of the world to watch England play in the rugby finals, despite having a 6-month-old baby and getting hourly abuse from his family, his country and the UK media. No wonder #workshywilliam is trending on twitter !

The actual players are fine with him. He does take an interest. Did you watch the Euros final? I bet you didn't
