One again, William's neglecting women's football. The Lionesses made history. It is the first time that the English team (male or female) reached the World Cup final since 1966. We all know that if the men had reached the final, he would've been there and probably would've brought George with him.

Queen Letizia and her daughter Sofia will be attending. What's William's excuse? You are président of the Football Association.

This is really disappointing but I'm not really surprised. The young generation of royals are such a joke compared to previous generations. Yes, the Queen’s children had their controversies but when it comes to royal work, they always got the job done.

Prince William will not attend World Cup final to watch Lionesses

Prince William will be watching England's first final since 1966 on the television and will not fly to Australia to see the Lionesses compete, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

I’m sorry. Had no idea. In fact I thought we agreed quite a bit recently.

The least he could do was use tax payers money as usual to set up a viewing screen at Windsor Castle for example and invite children, charities and budding sporting girls and boys.

Harry’s known to be more of a rugby fan than a football fan though - he’s only ever attended a couple of England matches and hasn’t been seen at club matches. Meghan, to our knowledge, is not a football fan. So if they attended it would look like they were using the Lionesses just to score points. I don’t think that would be a good look at all, personally.

EdithWeston · 20/08/2023 07:39

I've been panned as a "hater" on another site because I think the Prince of Wales has made the dead wrong decision on this. As president of the FA, he should have gone to the most important international fixture for an England team in nearly 60 years

(And I'm frequently panned as a "hater" of the Sussexes, as I think they have done a number of unfortunate things since they decided to step back)

I don't think hosting a large screen event (as suggested earlier in the thread) really makes up the deficiency, but it would go some way towards it.

cobicat · 20/08/2023 08:17

I think this is a non-story.

asterdaisy · 20/08/2023 08:48

The family go to balmoral every year and it has been in the press for weeks that the balmoral gathering is happening. The summit is made up. They meet to go hunting and spend time together as a family.
Like all family businesses they may talk about the family business as well when socialising together. That is normal in a family business. But calling it a summit is an obvious pr move.

That would be hilarious! I bet if Harry was FA President and was the one in the firing line, William would have turned up!
Personally I think William should have given up the FA Presidency when he became PoW. He is not future King of England, and he is Prince of Wales. Too many opportunities for negative headlines. But he does what he wants then pays lip service to the consequences, knowing that it won't really matter.

AnnunciataZ · 20/08/2023 09:02

If Harry was the president of the FA we'd be up to thread 3 on this and posters would be falling over themselves to say how terrible he was for not going to Oz to support our Lionesses!

LimeCheesecake · 20/08/2023 09:04

It’s a non- story that highlights bigger story.

Many in the establishment have paid lip service to viewing woman’s sport as equally valid to men’s, yet when the woman’s team have made it to the final of the World Cup for football - the national sport - they all have failed to show up. It’s too much bother, and no it wouldn’t be for the men’s game. plays into a general story of woman’s issues being officially important, but then not really when it becomes tricky. (Misogyny is still not a hate crime. Too tricky apparently, too ingrained like racism and homophobia haven’t been ingrained in our society.)

Then there’s the other big story of the Royals in a modern country. What is their role? If it’s not for ceremonial representing the people at the world stage while not being alined to a political party, what is the point of the working royals who aren’t the monarch? Particularly since William and Kate don’t seem to work as much as the previous generation of working Royals did. if we are funding them because they’ll work raising money and awareness of issues, then it’s perfectly valid to question how much work they do for that funding.

As we are no longer funding Harry and Meghan, there is a comparison available. As they are still doing the Invictus and some other charity work /environmental campaigning between paid work, are we getting value for money from funding William and Kate - are they doing significantly more for us to justify them not having to self fund?

We are funding a significant number of office and admin staff for William and Kate- is that value for money if this can happen.

It’s a non-story that highlights a whole load of issues. I know Williams fans will be “there’s nothing to see here” but there is. William needs the public to love the royal family. He’s missing opportunities to help that.

LimeCheesecake · 20/08/2023 09:07

I would laugh so much if Harry did turn up. But unlikely since he needs to be in Germany this week, it would be fabulous to see how the papers who’ve been slagging off William for not going to Australia would spin it as a negative that Harry went.

That’s literally what’s happening right now

Totally agree with this and your overall comment @LimeCheesecake

AnnunciataZ · 20/08/2023 09:22

As far as I can see there's only one thread about William @PrincessTigger whereas Harry only has to sneeze and there's 3 threads filled about how it was the wrong sort of sneeze and how dare he sneeze when he hasn't given up his title etc etc.

PrincessTigger · 20/08/2023 09:23

I’ve decided I’m not biting again. Like I said, we need a Harry jar.

QueenOfHertz · 20/08/2023 09:26

Imagine this:

William travels 24 hours to Australia. He doesn’t have time to get over jet lag. He falls asleep during the match. He flies home for another 24 hours.

Oh, I clutched my pearls so hard the string snapped.

AnnunciataZ · 20/08/2023 09:28

He's hardly likely to be slumming it with the plebs in economy is he? I'm sure that with a decent night's sleep in first class he'd be fine!

Novella4 · 20/08/2023 09:34

@LimeCheesecake you make good points about why this isn’t a ‘non issue ‘ at all -instead it’s highlighting really key issues about the uselessness of the so called ‘royals’

But I think the posters who said he couldn’t go to Australian because of republicanism were on to something
Not for the laughable reason given ( it would hurt Australian feelings to see Willy support England)

No - it’s because they can’t control the crowds and media in Australia.
He’d be booed

RovenderKitt · 20/08/2023 09:37

@LimeCheesecake quite. The president of the FA isn’t going to the World Cup Final, that’s how important women’s football is to them.

That’s not how jet lag works! You usually take off in the morning UK time (afternoon/evening Australia). As you’ve just woken up, unless you tried to stay awake all night (not recommended for an aiport!!) there’s 0 chance of you doing another 8 hours as soon as you board the plane. Then there’s a stop over mid afternoon/evening, and you have to take all your stuff off the plane while they reload, and board all over again. Usually that’s about 3 hours. By that time you finally start to get tired, the Aussie morning is starting! Then you land usually around late morning/noon and you have to try and survive the rest of the day without sleeping. This usually fails and you crash for a couple of hours and you’re a zombie for the rest of the day… The game is in the evening so W would have to get a flight the next morning. When you finally make it to Aussie evening, do you get to sleep then? Nope suddenly after a day of trying to glue your eyes open your body is suddenly buzzing. Then you wake every couple of hours because your body thinks this is just a power nap.

MrsFinkelstein · 20/08/2023 09:38

"No - it’s because they can’t control the crowds and media in Australia. He’d be booed".

I'm sure he would. The Australian fans booed the English Lionesses while they were playing.

Such good sports.

Have you ever met football fans before??
