One again, William's neglecting women's football. The Lionesses made history. It is the first time that the English team (male or female) reached the World Cup final since 1966. We all know that if the men had reached the final, he would've been there and probably would've brought George with him.

Queen Letizia and her daughter Sofia will be attending. What's William's excuse? You are président of the Football Association.

This is really disappointing but I'm not really surprised. The young generation of royals are such a joke compared to previous generations. Yes, the Queen’s children had their controversies but when it comes to royal work, they always got the job done.

Prince William will not attend World Cup final to watch Lionesses

Prince William will be watching England's first final since 1966 on the television and will not fly to Australia to see the Lionesses compete, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

I don't have very strong views about who the president of the FA is. However, I do think whoever it is ought to attend one of the most memorable events in English football. And I can make a decent stab at knowing about the PofW's content/load.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 19/08/2023 16:44

If the match wasn’t in a commonwealth country (and not somewhere politically problematic like qatar) I bet he’d have gone.

I think a lot of people are massively underestimating the issues with a British royal going to Australia for a day or two and not doing any engagements with Australians. The republicans there would have a field day with it.

yogasaurus · 19/08/2023 16:44

Joyfully just don’t care who wins, or who is there to watch it.

Each to their own, live and let live.

William may have a full diary of commitments we know nothing about.

That seems unlikely. Every year he and Kate disappear from view after Wimbledon and don't re-emerge until September. Fair enough in past years as he wasn't the heir but now that they're Prince and Princess of Wales I would've thought they'd step up a bit more. I'm not saying they aren't entitled to a holiday but 3 months off??

Exactly! This is my big problem with William and Kate. They've been called out for their poor work ethic pretty much their entire marriage but they don't seem to care.

Say what you want about Charles but he's a workaholic. Princess Anne is a workhorse. Prince Edward carries out a lot of engagements. Sophie does a lot of charity work and even spoke at the UN and even Prince Andrew, I can't stand him, used to carry out 300-400 engagements every year (that's more than William and Kate's count combined).

There's always excuses for them: the kids, they'll do more once William is first in line (clearly not),...

People need to be honest: they've always had a poor work ethic. They married in 2011. It took them both YEARS to start a solo project.

People can use the "they work behind the scenes" excuse all they want but if we don't see it, how would we know. William, at least, has stepped up with Earthshot and Homewards but Kate's ECE work is disappointing. It's been awareness campaigns for years with no development. That's why I've always said she needs another big project. There are so many issues in the UK involving children, child hunger being at the top.

I think it's a shame because they're the least hardworking members in the firm yet get the most press attention. Sophie went to Congo and Iran recently and nothing in the press but Kate's outfits and her meeting babies is all the press care about.

These two have so much influence. Imagine everything they could accomplish of they actually took and roles seriously and worked a little more

I don't disagree with you about the potential diplomatic awkwardness if William were to attend. There are good reasons for him not to be there.

I do think, however, that his PR team should have been well ahead of this. They've known for years that the tournament would be in Australia and England were one of the favourites going in. If it was decided that William wasn't going to go, then they should have predicted the criticism and come up with a media strategy to anticipate it. Isn't that their job?

Tbh most people are quite fickle and in-the-moment so if England win I think there will undoubtedly be a royal reception, quite possibly some honours for the team, and the whole “he didn’t go to Aus” will be quickly forgotten by most.

Highlighting before the competition that he wasn’t going would have just had, imo, the “why isn’t he going?”, “why didn’t he just organise some engagements in Aus?”, “why didn’t he just have a tour or family holiday planned?” questions being asked for weeks, rather than just a few days, and would have made it an even bigger issue.

PrincessTigger · 19/08/2023 17:08

They’ve recorded a video message wishing the Lionesses good luck… Princess Charlotte unbelievably cute 🥰

I agree that this will blow over in a few days. It is silly season after all!

But I still think some sort of strategy should have been put in place. William is FA President. England were always likely to progress to at least the semis. I'm not saying there should have been some big 'announcement' before the tournament, but there should have been some plan in place to minimise all the 'Oh he can't be arsed because it's 'only' the women and he's too lazy to break his holiday' type criticism. Now they've just left an 'open goal' for his critics.

Novella4 · 19/08/2023 17:41

So he’s too thick to think for himself and the constant PR fails are someone else’s fault ?

Sounds right .

Alternatively , maybe he has been advised and like the rest of the arrogant delusional Windsor men , he ignores good advice .

Either way , more former supporters are seeing the light as each month passes since Elizabeth died .

What a shit show it’s been

Samcro · 19/08/2023 17:44

He was just on the news, him and Charlotte wishing them well.
confused as to why only Charlotte was in it

Novella4 · 19/08/2023 17:44

The children are there for the same reason they are always trotted out.
Deflection

queenofarles · 19/08/2023 18:08

Either way , more former supporters are seeing the light as each month passes since Elizabeth died no idea what you are talking about here ,
most people are neither royalist nor anti royalist , but when they see something that is not right, they will point it out.

hate the idea of being team this or that, so childish.

Novella4 · 19/08/2023 18:54

@queenofarles

I don’t like ‘teams’ either but what you do suggest I call them other than former royalists / royal supporters .
Many people were always ‘meh’ I agree, but others have lost interest

Support for the monarchy has fallen since Elizabeth died. It is continuing to fall.
I’m heartened to see that people aren’t fooled by the transparent PR that is being resorted to .

No you’re supposed to be like “do you think it’s a bit suspicious William didn’t go to watch the Lionesses right after Harry didn’t go to watch the San Francisco 49ers” and then 4 pages later wonder why Harry is being discussed on a thread about William

🤣🤣🤣

LimeCheesecake · 19/08/2023 20:58

Oh look - now been reported in the press that Charles has summoned the family to Balmoral to discuss the future of the royal family. Seem William didn’t have a prior engagement that wasn’t something that could be cancelled, as he’s been able to take his family to visit his dad in Scotland on very short notice. (Wonder if he flew?)

this does sniff of a panicked PR team trying to think of something William could be doing that’s very important.

William pays for office staff to manage press and public relations, he’s really not got his moneys worth this month if they did fail to point out to him how bad it would look not to go.

LimeCheesecake · 19/08/2023 21:01

Someone posted on twitter this morning that Harry has the opportunity to do the most amazingly hilarious thing and turn up in Australia for the match when William can’t be bothered. the daily mail would explode.

Hippyhippybake · 19/08/2023 21:11

Yeah right, a summit hosted by the King to discuss the future objectives of the Commonwealth, setting out future targets for travel, engagements etc was all arranged at a day’s notice.

He and Charlotte wished the Lionesses well in a video before the Euros final last year too- William had previously said she enjoys playing football.

(what was being deflected when he and Charlotte did exactly the same thing last year I wonder? Considering he attended that match? Nothing, I assume…)

Didn't Philip start the family firm meet up every year at Balmoral decades ago. I did read/hear that there's going to be a big commonwealth tour in the coming months for William and Catherine, it makes sense to have an AGM to formulate discuss moving forward.

I hate football (blame my brother) but don’t see why his sons couldn’t be there as well, it’s an odd thing almost like only girl’s like women’s football ⚽️

Don’t want a big falling out, but for the last couple of days you have done this to me.
it’s no big deal, but I will keep posting.
i didn’t slag William off.
i genuinely don’t get why only Charlotte was there. I really hate football, for genuine reasons. So don’t understand why boys can’t wish women football players well.
