The trailer for 'Heart of Invictus" has been released by Netflix, and it looks incredible, and so moving.

I think one of the bigger takeaways for me, because this is where I have work to do I guess, is how much they all help each other, the importance of 'community' or having a tribe, however you want to word it. I know it's important but I think I wrongly assumed the biggest thing for them would be the physical challenge and achievement. That clearly has huge significance but I think I underestimate the importance of being social and having people around you. I tend to think, oh I am just a hermit like my Dad and thats what some autistic people are like. I also watched the blue zones which reinforced the importance of friendship or community on our health. I didn't really think of it like that before. I have had so much going on and a lot of my friends didn't like hearing about my illness or mental health, a lot said, oh hey, you're strong, come on you can do this. So I felt judged often and then massively distanced myself from a lot of people. Its slightly better these days but both programmes kind of reminded me this is really an important part of life.

I think it's really healthy to have a peer group that understand your experiences. I used to do a lot of work with unpaid carers and I used to always tell them " I can talk the talk but I don't walk the walk" at the end of the day I wasn't going home to care for someone

They got so much out of talking to each other as only they could really understands and I suppose it's the same for the veterans. We can sympathise and acknowledge their struggles but we don't really understand what they are going through

Purely going off vibes, Gyles Brandreth always seems very credible to me

Is it the jumpers? 😂😂

BasiliskStare · 01/09/2023 16:14

@MrsMaxDeWinter - "African wars so often forgotten " in the very early 70s I was in Lagos and saw some of the fall out from the Biafran war . Not forgotten here .

A jumper is a window into a man’s soul 😂

Gyles has always struck me as a man who knows what a juniper is for.

jeffgoldblum · 01/09/2023 16:52

He doesn't so much as wear a jumper, the jumper wears him ! 🤣

JamieFrasersfurrysporran · 01/09/2023 16:58

I wonder where he gets them

Iwantcakeeveryday · 01/09/2023 18:18

Good to know the opening ceremony will be available. Wheelchair rugby is the next day, September 10 and the 11th and also available on BBC :)

I'm pretty sure he said at the coronation that people knit them for him, some are sent, some are commissioned for special events. He must have thousands by now.

beatan · 01/09/2023 18:35

I've seen a few Harry needs to pass the baton? to who?

I'm glad for the folks who have enjoyed the series and others who have shared their experiences at the Games.

That will be for them to decide if and when the time comes to appoint a new patron. It may be years away. Need to be someone with experience of armed forces and probably hugh profile to keep the interest. However something like the Olympics just has a president and no one knows who that is so the Games will stand alone soon.

I beg your pardon? Thomas Bach, Jacques Rogge, Juan Antonio Samaranch, Avery Brundage, Pierre de Coubertin - talk about speak for yourself!

Never heard of any of them Grin

Not a fan of the Olympics then?🤣

The series is being downvoted on IMDB and some of the comments are very funny. Many of the downvoters flooding the comments are suggesting that he needs to "give it" to William. 🤔

Reminds me of the Jenni Bond article we discussed earlier, which spun off the idea that the royal Family can't "take" Invictus from Harry.

There is a deranged group that believes that he has not been punished enough, and needs everything "taken" from him, even the thing he started! The same group has been spreading the misinformation that William used his "secret Murdoch settlement" to fund Invictus.

There is simply no reasoning with some people.

Surely not those who were saying they hope Harry doesn't make this all about him...making it all about Harry themselves. The hypocrites.

Janiie · 01/09/2023 15:49

He's speculating like we all are! He's hardly likely to say the Royal family remain deeply hurt by his book and media antics in the past. Of course they're proud of the vets and IG.

They will never criticise him publicly, they aren't into mudslinging.

...they may not do it publicly but instead use their "sources" to do it for them.

Quite, @Seashellies

The Daily Mail had a bizarre news feature in which they zoomed into Harry's office and itemised it.

While berating him, naturellement, for making it all about him!!

Some of them bit dodgy, good they don’t have name recognition 😂

Obviously. It’s not what interests me about the games. Which was rather the point. Harry is Invictus at the moment and that is something of a cult of personality and it will need to transcend that if it is to survive without him. Nothing wrong with a patron few people know, the Games do the talking.

ALittleTeawithmilk · 02/09/2023 01:01

Was it a ‘cult personality’ thing, do you think, before Harry left the royal family or was he just a royal who had served, and who had some insight through similar experiences? I’m just wondering. I wasn’t paying much attention to Harry or any of the royals (apart from wedding spectaculars) back then.

The Olympic Games is a business, now. So I don’t think it’s comparable. It has been a business since professional athletes were allowed to participate. It’s very different to organisations like Invictus.

I can see another Veteran taking over at some point, and the IG surviving. I think the emphasis seems to be on community rather than ‘leader.’

WinnieTheW0rm · 02/09/2023 07:55

I've just seen on twitter that viewing figures for the documentary are 2.5mil

Is that correct and up to date?

Well they are never just a royal. Everyone knows who is the head of something. I think Invictus had something of a hey day last games. Biggest I remember. It was all over BBC. Given TV scale back this time and unfortunate timing opposite the rugby world cup I don't know. It long term doesn't have legs to be massive I don't think. But the paraolympics is a big deal. The special Olympics less so. But then things change and interests change.
