The trailer for 'Heart of Invictus" has been released by Netflix, and it looks incredible, and so moving.

For those interested, please find it here.

I’ve watched all 5 episodes. I cried a lot and feel extremely grateful. DH is a veteran, apart from being as deaf as post from working on aircraft for 35yrs, he’s fine both mentally and physically. The documentary just confirmed, yet again, how different life could have been.

I disagree that there was a lot in the media. Maybe there was about the physical injuries at the time and whilst the conflict was ongoing but no one seems to say anything about the many thousands of men and women with mental health conditions caused by the conflicts, or even just by being institutionalised from being in the armed services. It is estimated that in 2020, 88 veterans and serving soldiers, took their own lives. No one knows the exact figures, however, because a death certificate just says suicide not “veteran suicide”.

The Forces are getting better but in some cases they do chew you up and spit you out. DS1’s friend is competing at Invictus this year and it’s literally saved his life. He was medically discharged from the army with PTSD a couple of years ago. We all thought he’d be dead or in prison by now, but sport has saved him.

Prince Harry deserves a lot of credit for what he’s done getting Invictus going. You can gripe that he said X, or he looked at Y or he shouldn’t have gone to Z, but you can never take away what he’s done for veterans with Invictus.

Thank you for this wonderful post.

Thank you too to the poster who quoted Harry's full comments about support, which have been, as always, twisted out of their context.

I am so glad this thread is still going, and that there have been so many insightful posts about the armed forces, trauma and grief, from which I personally have learned a lot.

I am skimming, but there was a post earlier about "knocking Harry as some sort of bonding or gelling with others outlet.

This is exactly what these threads have always been. Knocking Harry and Meghan is a billion dollar industry for the tabloid press, and a bonding exercise for many. There are many studies that show that bonding over a "hate" figure is actually more emotionally satisfying to many than bonding as "fans". We should perhaps have a discussion another time about why this is, and how the tabloid media facilitates this and the Internet has made such bonding all the easier, especially with the ability to manipulate and photoshop images of hate figures.

Those who want to bond over knocking Harry, and who want to go beyond the scope of the series we are discussing may want to know that there is currently a thread running now where posters are gelling over Harry's "lies', Harry's "whinging", demanding that he "go away and shut up" etc.

I hope that can be another outlet for those so inclined, while those who want to talk about the documentary without bringing up every wrong thing that Harry has ever done in his life can continue to do so here.

@onlylarkin sorry to hear about your psoriasis, it can be very painful. I have had it off and on since I had children and my DH had it very severely about 10 years ago. You may have everything you need to deal with it but if not, feel free to send me a private message and I will tell you what we did that eradicated it.

Unfortunately you have referred to @Roussette's post where she totally misunderstood what I had posted about. She was the one who suggested this. No one else said they were "bonding" by posting negatively about Harry.

There is still quite a lot in the national news: eg those injured in action (including British volunteers) in the war in Ukraine, soldiers that are traumatised after the fall of Kabul, etc. There is the ongoing issue of homelessness of which veterans make up a large number. There are also plenty of stories in local news about veterans.

Edited

I know it's frustrating when you feel posters have misunderstood what you are trying to say (god knows I've been there!) and I really don't want to explain why I think I haven't. However, assuming I have... I still believe there is massive bonding and gelling between MNers who post negatively about Harry.

No one is bonding, well not the critics anyway.

What we are doing is debating. We are disagreeing, we are pointing out that the Vets are admirable but you get the feeling Harry is trying to shoehorn himself in after what 10 weeks in Afghanistan? He should shush and leave it to those who have suffered, the double amputees etc. He takes away from the true Vets imo. And as a pp said we are all entitled to our opinions when posted within TGs, even if others don't agree.

Roussette · 01/09/2023 09:06

See? It's nonsense like this that is so annoying. He wasn't there just 10 weeks. He did two stints there... one was 10 weeks, the next one was 20 weeks. No, he shouldn't 'shush'.

Roussette · 01/09/2023 09:08

and you are entitled to think so and say so BUT my point was that "derailment" seems at times to be subjective on here. Some posters are told it's not appropriate to say this or that even when it is legitimately linked to the topic wheres others seem to think it is OK for them to derail. HTH. It was NOTHING at all to do with gelling about disliking Harry. That is ludicrous.

Oh sorry I didn't realise! he only mentioned 10 weeks in the doc I think. I should have checked my facts as we all should after he says something.

Janiie, just wondering if have you watched the documentary series? Some things you have posted indicate to me that you don’t seem to have watched it.

I think H deserves credit for his tours but he should’ve left all his own stuff out of the documentary. It wasn’t relevant and it means all the focus is on the 2 seconds about him. They should’ve cut it out.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 01/09/2023 09:11

Wow, I can't imagine telling a veteran to sshh because I decided they didn't suffer enough. That's a brand new low.

Not ludicrous. Given that others agreed with the point I was making.
I could go back and explain my thought process on this when reading your post, but there is no point in engaging in a to and fro with you, which takes away from this thread.

So I won't.
Let's agree to disagree, that's the sensible thing to do. 👍

But you're wrong, the focus isn't just on him. The tabloid focus, people like you who intensely dislike him as you've said before, yes, but not everyone is doing that to the others, ignoring their stories and not even watching them as you've admitted. Harry is a veteran and he founded this, theres no way they should remove him from it. I mean seriously. You just want him to vanish into thin air don't you.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 01/09/2023 09:14

Honestly, I'm doing it myself now but we were just beginning to shift focus back to the stories of the athletes so I beg of all of you, lets just concentrate on that. Ignore the rest.

Roussette · 01/09/2023 09:15

He should obviously 'shusshhh' and disappear and hand over to JJChalmers. HmmAnd FWIW posters who say he should stop talking about himself, 99.9999% is not about him.
One sentence can inflame those that are looking for something to criticise him about though.

It’s a bit upsetting when some posters have dropped completely off-topic & triggering references to SA and CSA, without any warning whatsoever, then implied anyone who doesn’t rate the documentary 10/10 is in favour (even though some of us are survivors). The conversation has then meandered all sorts of ways, including people talking about their psoriasis. But talking about the person who executive produced the documentary, started up Invictus, and the words he said in the documentary is off-topic??
