Honours of Scotland

I have to go out so am recording the service but does anyone want to talk about the service today in Edinburgh?

I think it's amazing the Honours of Scotland have survived to the present day. I also like hearing the traditional words because they have so much history within them. I remember listening to the Proclamation and being struck that Charles promised to keep the Church of Scotland independent.

Anyway I find it all fascinating, weird sometimes but fascinating. The Rest is History did a series of programmes on Coronations which are well worth a listen.

Thanks @GrouchyKiwi , lovely pictures, I ended up missing it all in the end , I'm glad they let the protesters stay this time , now we can see that the numbers compared to the well wishers , have definitely been inflated by some!

DH caught up with it on iPlayer last night jeff. We had to find it via the BBC One schedule. Our friend is in the St Giles choir so it was lovely to see her singing!

Edinburgh looked stunning in the video of the flypast. It's worth finding the coverage for that alone!

jeffgoldblum · 06/07/2023 08:57

I will try and find it @GrouchyKiwi , my dh is Scottish and proud , I love to find out and see the history, such a beautiful country, love the different cultures and traditions, seeing this coronation done the 'Scottish' way is a real treat! .

MrsLeonFarrell · 06/07/2023 09:01

Watching the flypast I couldn't help wondering whether they were thinking, "ah, red arrows .... again"!

I notice that they were all very animated watching the 70 planes at Trooping, it must get a bit samey otherwise.

I thought the Red Arrows looked quite different when set against the Edinburgh skyline, compared to the flatness of the Mall in London

It did look amazing from the air.

Nice to see the Great Tapestry of Scotland today during Charles and Camilla's visit to Galashiels.- it's a truly beautiful piece of textile art, well worth a visit.

A family member was in the People's Parade - she absolutely loved the whole thing.

Can someone point me in the direction of this on iPlayer? I tried searching and couldn't find it. Sounds like a really interesting ceremony and I'm intrigued by the tiny crown.

GrouchyKiwi · 06/07/2023 21:19

The only way we could find it, JADS, was to go to Channels - BBC One - Schedule, then it was on at 1:30pm yesterday.

CuteCillian · 06/07/2023 21:21

mpsw that might be the best little film I've seen this decade.

costacoughee · 06/07/2023 21:34

The crown was stunning. One Oliver Cromwell didn't get his hands on!

Something like 'Service in Scotland...'.

spanieleyes · 07/07/2023 06:16

I could only find it on my iPad version of iplayer, it seems to be well hidden everywhere else!

One of the things they did for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee was have photographs of all the Army mascots together

Very cute that the goat will be retired when his handler retires, so they can stay together!

What a lovely, thoughtful gift for the late Queen! It’s interesting that the mascots and animals have ranks. I didn’t realise til I watched the coronation that the drum horses are actual “Majors”!

Something like 'Service in Scotland...'.

I was too lazy to look it up properly before but now I have caught up on the first hour of it and it's 'A Scottish Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication'.
Now I'm going to look up the lovely blue window with what seems to be a golden sun near the top of it.

upinaballoon · 07/07/2023 20:15

The Robert Burns window, installed in 1985. Now I want to go back to Edinburgh to look at it!

GrouchyKiwi · 07/07/2023 20:35

St Giles looked utterly beautiful with the sun shining through all the lovely stained glass.

JADS · 07/07/2023 21:44

Thank you @GrouchyKiwi and @upinaballoon - found it now
