Honours of Scotland

I have to go out so am recording the service but does anyone want to talk about the service today in Edinburgh?

I think it's amazing the Honours of Scotland have survived to the present day. I also like hearing the traditional words because they have so much history within them. I remember listening to the Proclamation and being struck that Charles promised to keep the Church of Scotland independent.

Anyway I find it all fascinating, weird sometimes but fascinating. The Rest is History did a series of programmes on Coronations which are well worth a listen.

Isn't it being worn today as the colour of Scotland?

Probably, but it's also very popular right now.

That was a lovely service. I loved the benediction "The worship is over, let the service begin." Wonderful music too.

That's a great way to finish.

I can see why Camilla was given the Order of the Thistle recently -so they would match.

Yes, lovely finish.

Corporal Cruachan IV still on duty outside with the band. Doing that Very Unimpressed look as only a Shetland can.

They said he won't wear the crown as it's too small.

That's what I heard too on the Today programme on radio 4 this morning.
Apparently he'll just be given it.
They were speculating that kings' heads must have been smaller back in the day Smile

Like gloves in second hand shops. They never fit me and I don't have enormous hands.

They should introduce him to Seamus the Irish Guards mascot so he has someone to talk to, or kick

I quite liked Catherine's hat, a whiff of the Archers in the design I think.

"I hope he's not wearing what looks like a purple pyjama top for this ceremony"
Missed a crucial word! Because I didn't really like what he wore under his robes for the Westminster Abbey coronation. I kept thinking Well Hel-looo (in best Leslie Phillips style)

I do agree, and I can’t help thinking that if only he had hung on to Angela Kelly instead if dumping her she would have advised him that a) it was really unsuitable and b) if he insisted on wearing it she would be on hand to neaten it and straighten it out before he had the official coronation photograph taken, where he was slumped in his seat, crown slightly askew, and purple pyjama top sticking out. AK may have been unpopular but she would have sorted out that photograph you can bet.

Did you see Major Johnny introducing Humza Yousef yesterday. Dear Lord, what a man! (Not Humza in case you're wondering)

I understand exactly who you mean!

Jubilee Johnny is almost like a genetically engineered specimen of a man, isn't he?

I thought the King looked less tense and seemed to be enjoying the whole thing, as apposed the the actual Coronation. Well done arranging for new music. The whole service was beautiful, and as a Scot I found it very simple and Scottish. His wife is an uncomfortable fidget!

One of the things they did for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee was have photographs of all the Army mascots together

I thought that too. It was a shorter service too which was better, plus fewer obscure objects being presented.

I was half watching the ceremony and I was sure I heard the phrase “Walk humbly with your dog”, luckily the subtitles were still up so I realised it had been “Walk humbly with your God.”

I started a thread but no one noticed so thought I would repost here. I prefer “walk humbly with your dog” and think Charles might too.

FelicityFlops · 05/07/2023 18:15

It was a much more intimate and significant service than that on 6th May.

JADS · 05/07/2023 18:29

Going to watch this later if only for Katherine Grainger and her sword. Sounds like an interesting bit of history. Shame we haven't heard more about it.

Also love the Welsh regimental goat 🐐

spanieleyes · 05/07/2023 18:32

Where is it on? I can't seem to find it anywhere!

spanieleyes · 05/07/2023 18:43

Found it on player, I might have a look and fast forward through the talky bits!

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 05/07/2023 18:57

Loved watching it & the crown 🤩

Samcro · 05/07/2023 18:57

Aww, I imagine HMQE was tickled pink when that photo was presented to her!
