Honours of Scotland

I have to go out so am recording the service but does anyone want to talk about the service today in Edinburgh?

I think it's amazing the Honours of Scotland have survived to the present day. I also like hearing the traditional words because they have so much history within them. I remember listening to the Proclamation and being struck that Charles promised to keep the Church of Scotland independent.

Anyway I find it all fascinating, weird sometimes but fascinating. The Rest is History did a series of programmes on Coronations which are well worth a listen.

Just saw Dame Katherine on the news. When my son graduated from Glasgow Uni she had a long conversation with him about what he was hoping to do and was absolutely lovely.
Apparently the original sword is too fragile to be used so the King commissioned a new one and called if for his mother.

MrsLeonFarrell · 05/07/2023 13:39

Apparently the Queen received the crown with her handbag over her arm and caused offense! At least Charles won't have that problem.

Does anyone know why bearskins? They seem extremely impractical.

I think the Scottish crown is now my favourite. Not quite so blingy or dare I say vulgar.

Thank you for the swordly information!

It makes sense to have one that can be fully handled (though I hope all items appear, even if some have to stay still on velvet cushions).

I hope he's not wearing what looks like a purple top for this ceremony

They've just said it weighs 7kg. If I was commissioning one I'd make it lighter, seems unnecessary to be so heavy.

They said he won't wear the crown as it's too small.

MrsLeonFarrell · 05/07/2023 13:51

The protesters are still shouting, they must take it in turns otherwise they'd be hoarse. I'm impressed by their commitment.

On another note I had no idea there was such a thing as a classical accordion!

"I hope he's not wearing what looks like a purple pyjama top for this ceremony"
Missed a crucial word! Because I didn't really like what he wore under his robes for the Westminster Abbey coronation. I kept thinking Well Hel-looo (in best Leslie Phillips style)

Oh goodness that didn't occur to me but now I can't get the picture out of my mind!!

I missed that bit, someone tried to sell me double glazing.

Have a lovely watch everyone, I'm off. Just watched them on their way, bet they are glad to avoid the uncomfortable coronation coach!

Loving the aerial shots of the city. Don't often get to see it from above like this - and in the sunshine!

GrouchyKiwi · 05/07/2023 14:21

I find all this stuff fascinating. I love that Charles has chosen the music.

St Giles looks so beautiful. Am glad the weather is being kind today; yesterday was a proper miserable day.

PerkingFaintly · 05/07/2023 14:22

No sparkly lapels from Yousaf this time, alas. I did like his get up at the Coronation.

GrouchyKiwi · 05/07/2023 14:23

Joy Dunlop sang that so beautifully, what a gorgeous voice. It sounded amazing echoing in the church.

PerkingFaintly · 05/07/2023 14:27

Didn't it just!

Onprozacandmyhighhorse · 05/07/2023 14:28

Is that the girl who does the weather on BBC Scotland? What a beautiful singer.

GrouchyKiwi · 05/07/2023 14:30

Lovely piece by Nicola Benedetti and the orchestra.

PerkingFaintly · 05/07/2023 14:43

Sword's up!

Sword's up!

That sounds a trifle indelicate

PerkingFaintly · 05/07/2023 14:49

Wee Alec with the crown. Nicer job than last time we saw him in St Giles, placing it on the late Queen's coffin.

GrouchyKiwi · 05/07/2023 14:51

That blue must be the colour of the year. It's everywhere recently.

PerkingFaintly · 05/07/2023 14:55

I'm adoring all this new music. Full marks to the king for commissioning new artists.

Isn't it being worn today as the colour of Scotland?
