Are they considered close friends? And Gayle, Oprah's bestie, is she still on side H&M...she appears to have gone quiet.
Or has the now known lies from their Oprah interview changed their friendship I wonder?
It all seemed so pally but did it stand the test of time?

I am willing bet you have not followed her career over the years, or watched one interview she did, beyond the one with Harry and Meghan

Well said @MrsMaxDeWinter
^^ This. I've loosely followed her for 30 plus years, I bet some posters don't realise her shows were shown on BBC and other channels back in the early nineties.
Her philanthropic achievements are inspiring... she has given away over £400M and aims that to be a billion in her lifetime.
Her work in Africa is wonderful... academies for underprivileged girls to gain an education they would miss out on.
She is all about education and empowerment of females.
Yeah but she has crashed and burned... rightio...

As for criticism of her because she is not out there defending H&M, that is laughable. She did an interview, that's it. Why she should be hawking herself around to defend Meghan or Harry, I do not know!

All this ridiculous twisting everything to make H&M look bad, along with anyone who associates with them, is quite funny though!

The Oprah interview was frustrating as there were no specifics in the racism claims (who, when, where).

Oprah was happy to let them ‘speak their truth’ but not interrogate them. I presume this stance was agreed in advance with the couple (I did listen to the podcast about the Lance Armstrong interview which is interesting)

I do think Oprah is hugely talented.

Those specifics have been shared with the family, in a letter from Meghan received by Charles, as confirmed by "palace sources".

I am sure we will all find out in time, but it's pretty clear now surely who it was who raised concerns about the baby's skin.

The papers reported this week that one royal was unable to eat for a week before the interview. And Low confirmed that KP leaked the bullying story to him because someone at KP was concerned about what would be revealed in the interview.

It's pretty clear isn't it that the person who urged Harry not to marry Meghan used arguments including, she's an actress, you know what they are like, and and imagine how brown your children would be!

costacoughee · 08/07/2023 09:29

@Howsimplywonderful I think you're correct judging by all the other carefully picked interviewers who stuck to a script.

I used to watch a lot of OW interviews in the past and was impressed by her gentle probing to reach to truth and by her compassion. I think she was as conned as many people have been by Meghans superficial charm and manipulation

MrsMaxDeWinter · 08/07/2023 09:31

@Roussette

I have followed Oprah for years and years and years.

It amuses me that some people think all she has ever done was to interview Harry and Meghan.

The same people also haven't heard of Barbara Walters, and are not familiar with this kind of interview format. They are also the kind of people who think Piers Morgan's shouting style is the only way to conduct an interview.

I think possibly even before then.
I remember having an at-cross-purposes conversation with a colleague who I thought was telling me how much they liked opera.

Howsimplywonderful · 08/07/2023 09:34

@costacoughee

She pulled all the details out of Lance Armstrong. In his case they agreed nothing was off limits, she is very good.

I think something was agreed in advance with Oprah as any prize winning journalist would have prodded in this area.

I’m sure we will find out in time.

Exactly. I have a lot of respect for Oprah. And the H&M interview is just a tiny speck in her longstanding career. There's been highs and lows undoubtedly, but she was never an investigative journalist, that is not what she does.

But lets tear Oprah down shall we because she didn't do a Piers talking over people and ranting.

I must be older than you - I remember it from the late 80s

Her reputation has gone up and down over the years, but there are some major achievements along the way and she's hugely influential

Errr, no it's not clear

Please clarify?

MrsMaxDeWinter · 08/07/2023 09:40

@Roussette

Still remember the Michael Jackson and Ellen interviews.

And the one with Whitney Houston which broke my heart, when she talked about the domestic violence she went through, and how she had to "dim her light" so Bobbi Brown could shine.

I missed the Armstrong interview but of course read about it.

The only comment I read about the "actress" thing was a rumour that Prince Philip was supposed to have said something like "You step out with actresses, you don't marry them".
While that's awful (if it's true), I thought they'd said the neither he nor the queen made the skin colour remark?

Meghan was called "Harry's showgirl" right from the beginning.

I do remember arguing the toss on an MN thread saying that was insulting and all these posters coming up with reasons why it wasn't insulting!

Ermmm... yes it was. Very very rude.

That's about when I remember it too. It was one of my first jobs. Certainly pre-90s.

LaMarschallin · 08/07/2023 09:50

Roussette

Meghan was called "Harry's showgirl" right from the beginning.

Fair enough. I meant the only comment I read that was supposed to have been made by a member of the RF was the thing Prince Philip was supposed to have said.

Howsimplywonderful · 08/07/2023 09:51

I think some posters got confused about remarks Philip apparently made decades earlier and thought they related to Meghan, just like posters also got confused more recently that she was called princess pushy when that was Princess Michael of Kent’s nickname.

LaMarschallin · 08/07/2023 09:59

Howsimplywonderful

Maybe so. In which case, that may be where I read it.
The point I was attempting to make was that whoever is referred to in the following post

It's pretty clear isn't it that the person who urged Harry not to marry Meghan used arguments including, she's an actress, you know what they are like, and and imagine how brown your children would be!

isn't pretty clear to me. As I said, the only person I'd read who was rumoured to have commented on her actress status was supposed to have been prince Philip.
And he didn't make the skin colour comment, we're told.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 08/07/2023 10:02

@LaMarschallin

If it's not clear to you, no biggie. It's really all speculation at this point, aided by some pretty obvious breadcrumbs, at least they are obvious to me, but they may not be to you or others.

It will all come out soon enough.

LaMarschallin · 08/07/2023 10:14

If it's not clear to you, no biggie

Well, no.
Generally not much here is a "biggie".
I've said before that I post on these threads because nobody I know in RL is particularly interested in the royals, so read these threads to get my gossip.
So, I wondered what I'd missed.

aided by some pretty obvious
breadcrumbs, at least they are obvious to me,

Of course they're obvious to you - you posted them!
If you don't want to say what you mean, that's fine.
The only advice I've read that anyone in the RF gave Harry about marrying Meghan was William telling him to take time to get to know her, or words to that effect.

MrsMaxDeWinter · 08/07/2023 10:44

No worries at all.

costacoughee · 08/07/2023 09:11

Please don't insult me or my intelligence. The facts speak for themselves. Oprah has said very little in defence of her program or the couple. Her silence is deafening. She was played like a fiddle and manipulated on the world stage. That must hurt hence the silence.

A real friend would be out and loud defending the couple. She isn't.

This has to be a joke...

Good one - you almost had me!

Serenster · 08/07/2023 11:10

Honestly, so far I have heard supporters of Meghan and Harry announce, with absolute certainty each time, that the “Royal Racist” is, variously, Camilla, Charles, Anne, Kate and now William. Pick a lane! 🤣 And in the meantime we all know from Prince Harry himself that the comment wasn’t racist anyway…

And while I agree that referring to someone as a (Vegas) showgirl likely has negative connotataions, when the person in question is an actress dating a Prince, the reference is undoubtedly to “The Prince and the Showgirl” starring Lawrence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe. Which is a completely different kettle of fish.

Serenster · 08/07/2023 11:16

(I should add, I’m talking about the phrase being used by the media . If Prince Phillip did indeed refer to Meghan as showgirl at any stage, I would not assume he was trying to be witty!)

MrsMaxDeWinter · 08/07/2023 11:24

And in the meantime we all know from Prince Harry himself that the comment wasn’t racist anyway…

Funny how his explanation is always cut off by the defenders of racism at that part. He went on to say that it was, in his view, an instance of unconscious bias, which if not addressed becomes racism

It's also pretty obvious that he was handing out one of the famed "olive branches" by trying to dial down the temperature.

Because when anyone expresses "concern" about how brown a baby's skin is likely to be, and how that will look, that is in the view of most people, actually racist.

It was said in the context of someone trying to dissuade Harry from continuing his relationship with Meghan. Whether you call it unconscious bias as harry did, or racism, it is a pretty despicable thing to say because it implies that whoever said it believed that Harry had the obligation to maintain "racial purity' in the line of succession.

And that is an ugly thing to say, no matter what you call it.

Serenster · 08/07/2023 11:36

But it was also described by the Sussexes as being made without malice. And Harry was the one that heard it, not you.
