"They don't just report the news, they create it": on Meghan, Harry and the Press

The much trumpeted story of the Dior deal is such a classic tabloid creation, isn't it.

I enjoyed this Grazia article that lays bare the utter nuttiness.

First the tabloids report the rumours as though they are true.

"Meghan to sign with Dior!"

No sources, just speculation based on Meghan and Harry wearing clothes by Dior a handful of times.

Then when both the Sussexes and Dior report that the rumours are not true, (Dior spokesperson said they are "nonplussed" about where the rumours came from) they spin it into "Meghan Rebuffed by Dior!"

This has also happened with Meghan's much rumoured run for the presidency: Robert Jobson actually wrote, with a straight face, in his book published in April 2023, that she was absolutely, certainly and most definitely going to run for president in 2024.

I mean any critical person would realise that the timelines don't make sense, she would have needed a fundraising Super PAC by the time the book was published, and in any event, Democrats don't normally challenge a sitting president ... but hey ho, Meghan is running for president in 2024 because a "Royal Correspondent" said so (and they are so knowledgeable about the American presidency) and a tabloid published it.

And it's the same with The Tig. She is going to launch it any day now. She wants to rival Gwyneth Paltrow! Story after story, based on nothing but speculation.

Rumour after rumour, speculation published as "news" to create media stories about a woman whose plans are not known to the tabloids because she and her husband made it crystal clear even when they were in the UK that they don't engage with the tabloid press.

And there are no "palace sources" who can speak with any kind of plausibility about the Sussexes, so the tabloids make it up as they go along, whipping up headline after headline, driving their readers into a frenzy over things they create ...

While ignoring the important news, like the damning questions by the judge in the Mirror Group case, who asked why the journalists, among them Piers Morgan, have not come to court to testify in the phone hacking trial ...

Oh no, that's not as important to report on as Meghan's fictitious Dior deal, completely implausible rumours of her presidential ambitions, and the speculated upon plans to best Gwyneth Paltrow!

Depressing

I saw this @Roussette It really is.

The narratives are so forced too.

Remember how a month or so ago, Phillip Schofield was criticised for a week and did an interview. Next everyone was asking him to be left alone? Guess what? He was actually left alone !!!

Yet, here we are with people digging up a 2yr interview non stop.

Yes, and famous ppl coming out urging everyone to leave PS alone, and how he would be driven to a suicide. As far as I know, it's pretty quiet on him now. Here was madness about it all
Yet Meghan who has barely said a thing all year is trashed daily on here and all the media

Variety on Clarkson’s Bollocks article:

One passage in the ruling (point 33) sheds light on how the Committee arrived at its decision to uphold the complaint on the basis of Markle’s sex:
The Committee first considered the references in the article to the Duchess’ sex. It noted that the article’s headline described the Duchess as a “A Woman Talking Bollocks”. The article cited three people as objects of the columnist’s ‘hatred’: the Duchess of Sussex and two other women, Nicola Sturgeon and Rose West, and the only clear common characteristic between the three was their sex. It highlighted that the Duchess is seen as a female role model (as being “pretty cool”) by referring to her influence on “younger people, especially girls”, and the feeling of “despair” which this prompted in the columnist. It stated that the Duchess had “obviously used some vivid bedroom promises to turn [the Duke of Sussex] into a warrior of woke”, which in the view of the Committee was a reference to stereotypes about women using their sexuality to exert influence, and also implied that it was the Duchess’ sexuality – rather than any other attribute or accomplishment – which was the source of her power. Finally, it referred to a “dream” of the columnist in which the Duchess was the subject of humiliation and degradation. Any of these references, individually, might not represent a breach of Clause 12. However, they were employed in the context of the columnist expressing his hatred of the Duchess “on a cellular level” and, together, they served to highlight the Duchess’ sex while the article also used humiliating imagery which played on negative stereotypes about women.

That was from Variety. It seems to be a very good article but my iPhone blanked some of it. My phone does that at times.

Variety on IPSO ruling re Clarkson’s Shame article .

CEO Jemima Olchawski said: “Since it was established in 2014 IPSO has never upheld a complaint about sexism – and that changes today. This landmark decision is a real opportunity for our media to catch up with what women have known for years – misogyny and hate are not acceptable and they can no longer be dressed up as satire or banter. Misogyny that normalizes violence and coverage that blames women who experience violence have no place in our media, or anywhere in our society.”
Olchawski said the decision will help to elevate “the state of public discourse about women and tackle misogyny in our media.”

Media ‘misogyny…….can no longer be dressed up as satire or banter.’

Amen to that.

Variety interviews IPSO and we get a look at the process.

Another happy dance!

What I don't understand is why they are waiting 6 months because they want to contact Meghan.

Why make her re-live the incident again.

It is what it is. Make your judgement and deliver it, no need to go through everything with her again.

Iwantcakeeveryday · 04/07/2023 09:44

Thanks @Morestrangerthings and @Roussette for the articles. Its crazy to me this is the first time they've upheld a complaint about misogyny but it shouldn't be I guess, not only is hating Meghan a billion dollar industry, so is sexism. While its good they did, it doesn't actually punish the publisher or the author so they've simply agreed with what decent people were already saying. Its a win but a small one. It just seems like not enough in 2023.

MarcelProust · 04/07/2023 10:24

Well @Iwantcakeeveryday you will see the same vein with covering immigrants.

Anyone these papers can trample on.

so true, all the "be kind" and mentioning CF.
Yet the Meghan tirade goes on, even though she has said she has had mh problems in the past.

costacoughee · 06/07/2023 13:27

I'd hardly say Meghan and harry have been keeping a low profile. Signing up to a PR agency, issuing statements via archwell, award ceremonies, car chases, court cases. ...

How many times have you seen Meghan? Once collecting an award, one meal out I think.
Are you saying she is not allowed to leave her house?
Or work? (signing up to an agency)
What statements?

Roussette · 06/07/2023 13:49

I just don't know what people want. When she literally said nothing did nothing wasn't seen for about 4 months, there were endless posts on here asking where she was, why wasn't she at Court with Harry, what was she doing, why was she quiet.

Yet when she dares to go out the door, it immediately turns to 'she's hardly keeping a low profile'

It honestly is laughable

costacoughee · 06/07/2023 15:32

I think it's taken around 4 months for the web of lies spun by the hapless pair to be untangled and dissected. Soooo much to be investigated in the TV and book offerings 😂

Roussette · 06/07/2023 15:39

Like what?

It's very difficult on these threads when people make sweeping statements like this, along with an insulting name for them, and never explain what they mean

One book. Did you read it?

The NF, did you watch it all?
I'm curious

They aren't perfect that's for sure, but really not sure what you mean.

Did you see the Netflix series has been nominated for a Hollywood Critics award? best streaming non fiction series.

That's good. It'll create fury on here but who cares!

Serenster · 12/07/2023 18:14

That’s nice. I imagine Harry might also be in line for a Grammy nomination for his audiobook too!

Serenster · 12/07/2023 18:33

The Hollywood Critics Association (which I’d not previously heard of, unsurprisingly if you read the entry below) has a bit of a chequered story though!

Isn't Hollywood Critics Awards one of those you have to pay to submit your entry?

Serenster · 12/07/2023 18:49

I don’t know, but they were ranked 15th out of 15 Awards (i.e. worst) by the LA Times at the start of 2023, with recent financial and fraudulent voting issues.

15. Hollywood Critics Assn. Film Awards
Established: 2016 (TV awards established 2021)

Ranking rationale: This fledgling group (original name: Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society) was beset by accusations of financial impropriety and fraudulent voting tabulations last year. Several members resigned. Greater transparency promised.
High point: Improbable continued existence.
Low point: Co-founder obsessed with Kristen Stewart ... who still turns up at the awards to collect an award and a photo opp.

I listened to the podcasts and they were rather dire. The digs at Paris Hilton were quite distressing considering the difficulties she had experienced. Yet still got an 'award'. More and more it seems these Hollywood awards are an industry back slapping back handing exercise. Look at how the Oscar's were given to white actors only for years

How odd you are distressed when Paris Hilton entered into the conversation quite willingly and they had a good conversation about the labels they both had experienced and had to fight against.

It wasn't 'digs' it was a mutual conversation, they agreed on so much, and ended up on a very positive note.

Paris said she created a persona and has since pushed back against it. Not the slightest bit 'dire'. Or indeed distressing.

costacoughee · 12/07/2023 21:09

@Roussette I'm happy you heard what you did and missed the passive aggressive digs. As in I so admired your blonde bimbo persona, I was always the nerdy one. (Aka the intelligent kid)

Your recall is nothing more than your recall. Mine is different and equally valid. No need to respond Agree to disagree.

Suffice to say Meghan has been fired from Spotify with only half the fee.

Howsimplywonderful · 12/07/2023 21:15

I’d listened to a podcast talking about reality of the award ceremonies. I was ao disappointed, it made me very cynical.

But then Mario Puzo referred to it in the godfather (book) so it’s hardly a new phenomenon.
