So let me get this straight, if famous people do not immediately deny every story, it must be true? is this true for the rest of the royals? Meghan has stuff written about her every day.

That's why a policy of never commenting can be a valuable one.

Once you start down the road of court actions, then every time you don't take action, people will think "oh, there must be something right about this one"

It is true for the rest of the RF - famous for never commenting.

(Unless to deny commercial links, something that has been done for both Kate (hair extensions) and Meghan before she left (weight loss pills))

friendlycat · 20/06/2023 10:48

If this was the work of their PR team (who knows) to distract from the other negative press it's seriously weird as it was always bound to backfire.

It's getting extremely hard to rationalise how H & M keep digging these massive holes for themselves, especially with the level of top notch professional PR etc they must have access to.

It almost seems as though this story was potentially put out there just based on the fact that Harry wore a suit of Dior's recently and Meghan has been seen wearing Dior outfits and carrying Dior handbags. I know that PR has a lot of "spin" but there is spin and then there is spinning way out of control.

This coming so close after the "near catastrophic" car accident is doing them no favours whatsoever. It seems to me that they are getting dangerously close to being so ridiculed now that others (brands/people/organisations) will be damaged by association with them unless they seriously reset themselves on a different path altogether. I can't help but wonder though whether it is now all too late and that they have missed that window of opportunity.

But the big problem remains of needing to earn mega money to pay for their lifestyle.

SidekickSylvia · 20/06/2023 11:01

Iwantcake - The Mail named one of their sources for the Dior ambassador story as WME, Meghan's new PR agency. I can't remember if it was linked on this thread or the 'grifters' thread, but I saw it on this forum yesterday.

You're right about it not making sense, because it was obvious it would backfire, but nothing they do makes sense to me.

Howsimplywonderful · 20/06/2023 11:09

WME is a Hollywood agency so used to releasing puff pieces as no-one ever checks them out for accuracy and truth.

This is why they threw out some dross as a distraction and it’s come back to bite them on the ass.

SoTedious · 20/06/2023 11:11

I think it's about finding the least worst solution to the Spotify / grifters story, as that was so damaging. Instead we have Meghan associated with a big name fashion house in a plausible way, and denials which make it look like either a made-up story with invented sources, or if you believe the sources, a slip up on the part of the new agency, which has been corrected by the spokesperson.

A much better situation than when everyone's attention was on a public accusation of laziness from someone who worked with them. And they no doubt hope to head off at the pass the teased unflattering story about how useless Harry is.

Dumpruntime · 20/06/2023 11:14

I guess she wrongly assumed Dior would likely say nothing and let it die down . So limited risk. And if Dior did deny she could immediately do the same. Which is exactly what she did.

it was fake news put out to detract from the bad headlines. A pr disaster.

it’s long been rumoured that neither harry or Meghan listen to their experts. They only listen to each other.

It is likely their pr team said they should put something positive out to detract from being called a pair of grifters, it’s basic pr principles for dummies, and so they made this up as dior was likely the safest bet to respectfully say nothing. Meghan will have endorsed it’s release.

she gambled and lost.

SoTedious · 20/06/2023 11:18

Yes, and plausible deniability is built in, so if Dior do challenge it, you just deny it too: "gosh yes, Dior are correct, there is no deal and we have no idea where this silly rumour came from"

Thanks EdithWeston, I was about to search for it as Iwantcake seemed so sure it had nothing to do with Meghan's PR team that I wondered if I imagined it.

Because their official spokesperson there denied it. The Mail said ' sources at', so not the same thing at all. They also had to deny the same rumour after Harry wore the Dior suit. How many times do they have to deny it for people to accept it? 'Someone told me", is just gossip to me. An official spokesperson has denied a Dior connection, twice.

This is tabloid created in order to continue to persecute and humiliate her.

Except they have commented. The Queen and Charles have in fact sued tabloids. K palace issued a statement when articles appeared calling William a bully. They did not issue a statement about the stories regarding his temper, with many sources over the years confirming this, so it must be true the future King is a hot head who lashes out at his own father then.

If you think an official denial means the Dior story didn't originate with them, I'm afraid you are falling for a pretty basic PR move.

A perfect fait d’accompli for the Mail - the perfect negative set up. A true masterclass in action.

Yup. They do it all the time. She can't win either, look at the response. People are literally buying this crap. They invent a story and even if she denies it, they'll claim she planted it, because she's soooo stupid and its all their fault because they have no clue how this works.... blah blah blah, same thing happening again over her podcast today. New story, same tactic. A new claim will surface by the end of the week. Meanwhile, nobody gives a shit what the useless royals are actually doing or cash for honours, missing jewellery or anything that actually affects us.

Not if the story came from their people in which case they set themselves up quite nicely.

SoTedious · 20/06/2023 12:12

Those who think the Mail made this up in order to persecute Meghan, why on earth would they do that while they had the "fucking grifters" story on the go? That's much more damaging.

Even if you have no experience of PR or the media, ask yourself who benefits from this -

Dior? No, they now have to squash the idea of a relationship while trying not to piss off someone who sometimes gets photographed wearing their clothes.

The Mail? No, it has taken the sting out of a real belter of a story.

Meghan, who has gone from being a "fucking grifter" to having her name plausibly linked with Dior?? Hmm..

I do, it actually makes perfect sense. I mean ffs, someone started a thread on that very topic and it's still going. My conspiracy theory radar is going off!!

SoTedious · 20/06/2023 12:30

Amazes me how people who criticise Meghan and Harry are apparently (according to some on these threads) dopey sheeple who believe everything they read in the Daily Mail, but the worldly wise Meghan and Harry supporters can't see through this very basic PR move.

Really? I think it's fairly obvious.

The press make up crap all the time, made this up, then when it was denied everyone can twist it into, ha ha they don't want her, she tried it and now she's a fool.

You really think the press made up the "Fucking Griffters" remark? Isn't that taking fandom way too far?

AutumnCrow · 20/06/2023 12:36

In a previous career - seems like a different life, now - I had a 'big job', and to some extent I guess I was a minor 'victim of the press'. That's why I'm drawn to look at and analyse this stuff.

The tabloid press will publish and any old crap if all they have to do is retract it the next day and/or publish a different, opposite story.

So on Monday you might get, 'AutumnCrow suspected of eating slugs in midnight rituals, a source claims'.

On Tuesday, 'AutumnCrow sensationally cleared of eating slugs in midnight rituals! Our investigation has unearthed new evidence [which I'd probably emailed them myself the day before] which clears the embattled mother-of-three (41) of culinary fetish allegations!'

Meanwhile my kids are asking me why their friends at school think we eat slugs and 'what's a fetish, mum?'

Anyway, what I learned was - be very, very careful with the piranhas of the press; you will never win.

I am not talking about that and please stop quoting me, after your comment about Ngozi Fulani ( now deleted ) I have no interest in conversing with you.

Not that one. They reckon the Mail made up the Dior story - the one that was a big help to Meghan - because they hate Meghan so much and want to persecute her 🤪

tigger2022 · 20/06/2023 12:43

Dior really did the dirty on Harry with those suits - badly fitting and not properly pressed.

They’ve also been quite mixed with Meghan in the past.
