They do not give a hoot about diversity and inclusion

Some of the diversity and inclusion aspects of the Flower show this year, leaving aside the work with London schools that has already been discussed:

  • Chelsea will be hosting its first wedding, between the Indian garden designer Manoj Malde and his partner, Irish man Clive Gillmor.
  • In the Great Pavilion there will be a display celebrating female gardeners; for the first time in the show’s history more designers are female than male.
  • Horatio’s Garden is designed to be wheelchair accessible. This garden will be moved after the show to the Princess Royal spinal injuries centre in Sheffield.
  • The Choose Love Garden is inspired by refugee migration routes across Europe. It will grow crops and herbs eaten by asylum seeker communities in the UK. The garden will later be relocated to Good Food Matters in Croydon, a community scheme that provides space and support for minority groups to grow and cook their own food.
  • A requirement this year is that every garden lives on after the show, whether it be in a hospital, a school or a community space, so thousands of people will benefit from these gardens for years to come.

I'm just waiting to see what we deflect to next...

The RHS invite schools to all their shows, and to events at their gardens at Wisley, Harlow Carr, Hyde Hall, Bridgewater and Rosemoor (I've listed them so you can see the geographical spread).

It's alongside their schools gardening programme, and usually very popular.

Are you actually saying this isn't appropriate, and that they should either refrain from including the schools they work with in any of their events? Or that the schools programme should end?

Neverknowinglyunderbold · 29/05/2023 07:58

None of these varying explanations stand up to scrutiny and so publicity probably is a good explanation.

It has been said that the kids apparently represent the demographics of the area, then someone pointed out that actually Chelsea is very diverse and the schools are diverse. So why such a skew towards blacks kids? Do these schools represented only black pupils? Then it was Chelsea allowed for these kids to be inspired and that’s part of its outreach but apparently it had not active part in choosing the schools from the community it is based in.

The kids did not choose themselves neither did they ask to be on camera surrounding a princesses like she’s on a trip to Africa. This is in the UK and in London where schools are diverse.

sashagabadon · 29/05/2023 08:04

Eh? You’re getting in a muddle RHS/ CFS are the same thing.

Serenster · 29/05/2023 08:05

The kids’ parents would absolutely have been asked for permission for their children to attend the trip and be photographed though.

And schools are diverse in London, yes, because London is diverse. Do events in London with communities in London and the photos of it will reflect that diversity. That’s reportage, not PR.

I wasn't aware of the RHS Campaign for school gardening but have just been on their website and Twitter feed and it looks great. I am going to follow up with my work hat on ( wearing it gainfully obvs) to see how we could better engage ( in a local authority area - far far away from Chelsea- with very significant levels of disadvantage and inequality) - thank you!

RoseAndRose · 29/05/2023 08:15

It was the first time CFS has had an RHS schools gardening project event. (CFS is one RHS event, but easily the most well-known and most extensively televised)

I can't find a list of schools, but they were all London ones, and they targeted areas with high markers of deprivation. The schools then chose which pupils attended.

I think it's a good think that RHS is trying to make gardening more diverse. I like it that it's now pretty normal for plants from show gardens, once dismantled, to be donated to community projects. And I love it that a garden inspired by a community garden in a housing estate less than 1 mile from CFS and partly built by their volunteers, won a Gold this year

myrtleWilson · 29/05/2023 08:22

Here's a screengrab of the some of the schools who attended

@Neverknowinglyunderbold You're paying me? You really are showing a gross level of self importance. You don't pay for me. I work, I look after my kids and DH, I manage my home. If I have a few moments I indulge in social media. Doesn't everyone? All the other mums waiting to pick up their kids are on phones. Are you saying I'm not allowed? If so why are you indulging?. 😂😂😂😂

polkadotdalmation · 29/05/2023 09:07

@Neverknowinglyunderbold For someone so I engaged, disinterested, too busy with real life, you seem to be quite obsessively commenting here... just sayin

@polkadotdalmation I wonder if this is another poster who is absolutely, definitely in the UK 🤔😂

Do you think this will all kick off again about Wimbledon as well?

And of course you not nlsvk kids represent the face of deprivation. I thought working class white boys are the most lagging behind in terms of aspirations and educational attainment. If it’s all about deprivation is deprivation only found in one particular race?

Stop using black kids for point scoring when it suits.

So they visit Chelsea and what do they see? Practically no one who looks like them. What impression do you think that leaves with them?

Neverknowinglyunderbold · 29/05/2023 10:46

polkadotdalmation · 29/05/2023 10:51

Of course they don't. They represent the kids who go to school in that part of London. There were white kids too in that group, I saw an actual video and there was a mix. Selective photos are just another 'PR' exercise but this time used by the M&H fans to denigrate Kate.

myrtleWilson · 29/05/2023 10:54

@Neverknowinglyunderbold I have absolutely no idea why you tagged me in that post - I was talking in general terms about the RHS work with schools and my plans to bring this new information into my work - I made no claims about deprivation being found in any particular race.

Howsimplywonderful · 29/05/2023 11:25

My dd 13 still loves gardening, the kids in her primary school spend some time gardening thanks to some lovely local volunteers so they got to grow some flowers and vegetables. She still tries to grow fruits and vegetables. We’ve moved house and had to do work on the garden so waiting for them to come back and put in some raised beds for her

Gardening is a wonderful skill and time out of the garden in nature is to be recommended

I'm not, I personally think it's an incredibly important part of the whole RHS going forward, but the poster I was replying to obviously doesn't agree.

Megan's fans should start a thread about Kate's parents who took out a tax payer funded covid loan and still haven't paid back and business in ruin! Neither Kate nor her parents have successful career or business.

Coxspurplepippin · 29/05/2023 13:46

The Middletons took out a COVID loan to try and keep their previously very successful business afloat during a period where thousands of hospitality/events companies did exactly the same - many didn't survive. Why are you so exercised about the Middletons specifically? As if we didn't know.........

Are you this delighted at every other small business that went under during Covid? I could pass on the details of the owner of the pub my son worked at that had to close due to the negative impact of Covid if you want? You could gleefully post about his business failing too if you like.
