Pronunciation of Eugiene

So it seems Eugiene is pronounced -You-zhu-knee or You-juh-knee

I may be imagining it but when she was a child I’m CERTAIN the press reported her throughout as “You-Janey”

Is it just me?

I completely agree with you - that's what was said at the time of her birth, but they've changed the pronunciation since then - as they are perfectly entitled to do.

TheSnowyOwl · 13/05/2023 18:21

Princess Eugiene has said the media mispronounced her name. I suppose back when she was born announcements were on a board at the palace but I would have expected the media to have been advised of the correct pronunciation once it was apparent they were incorrect.

The current pronunciation is much much better

They definitely used to say You-Janey through their childhood. Thought it was You-Genie now.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 14/05/2023 18:17

I’ve always pronounced it U-schen-ay

AuroraCake · 14/05/2023 23:21

I doubt she cares. She has always seemed like the royal most to get an award for: couldn’t give a …. When the media asked how they wanted August’s name pronounced, the reply was: However. She must be so confident in herself to just not care one iota and have no chip on her shoulder. Her parents must have loved her a lot in all the right ways.

Very like Zara in many respects and ai know she is very close to Mike and Zara.

How she gets on with Harry I don’t know. Polar opposites.

YouWonJayne · 15/05/2023 08:50

Did the media really ask how to pronounce August 🤣🤣

Yes mainly over whether it was Au gust or Augoost? The reply was Whatever.

There is no way I can make use-your-knee work. It's yu-zhuh-nee. 'Your' doesn't work

It works here. I wonder whether it doesn’t in a rhotic accent?

mathanxiety · 16/05/2023 00:06

YOO-zhe-nee

My gran was Eugenie, she pronounced it ur-jen-knee.

A relative was Evelyn pronounced a bit short clipped. Ever Lyn. Not Eveelyn.

A relative was Evelyn pronounced a bit short clipped. Ever Lyn. Not Eveelyn.

That is the most common pronunciation of that name now. The Evee Lyn one was common when it was also used for boys.

I’ve never know an Evelyn be anything other than Everlyn but I think in pure pronouncation it is Ev e Lyn but an r sound is added a bit like how it’s added to Chicago by these here isles.

LadyEloise1 · 16/05/2023 09:58

It's not a name I like.
Nor do I like the name Beatrice.

Laureli · 16/05/2023 16:05

Im pretty sure there was a disney princess called Eugiene maybe in the cinderella movie? not sure.

Anyway since I was little ive pronounced the name 'You-Jean' but heard other call the actual princess 'You-Jeanie'.

whichever is correct it is a lovley name :)

gogogoji · 16/05/2023 16:57

@FatGirlSwim I don't have a rhotic accent. I'm down south. 'Your' doesn't sound like zhuh

LynetteScavo · 16/05/2023 17:07

I say YOU- sher-knee

I think it's supposed to be
you-ZSHEN- knee

I used to say You-Genie, because I think that's how it was pronounced on the news when she was born.

‘Use your’ sounds like eu-zhuh though? When they are said together?

googledidnthelp · 16/05/2023 21:47

I think i always say You'v Jenni

Here's her mum pronouncing the name.

But she only mentions Beatrice as far as I can see.

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 16/05/2023 21:49

But she only mentions Beatrice as far as I can see.

No, she opens by saying 'This year, the most important thing that Beatrice, Eugenie, her father and I would like to do ....'

fundhermental · 17/05/2023 07:21

@halfsiesonapotnoodle I think she says Beatrice usually but it's Eugenie not usually

fundhermental · 17/05/2023 07:21

But sounds like usually

90stalgia · 17/05/2023 07:23

'Usually' would make no sense in that sentence.

But sounds like usually

Ah, I heard it. Thanks!
