Pronunciation of Eugiene

So it seems Eugiene is pronounced -You-zhu-knee or You-juh-knee

I may be imagining it but when she was a child I’m CERTAIN the press reported her throughout as “You-Janey”

Is it just me?

I always thought it was literally the feminine of Eugene. So You-Jeannie.

But it seems to be as above, more Yoush-zainy . Use your knee is a good reference! :)

If you search ‘pronounciation Eugenie’ you can hear it. I clicked on the English version and then clicked on the French version. It’s prettier in English - I think.

There’s no hard ‘s’ sound in ‘use’ - more of a ‘zh’

If it were the French pronunciation it would be Er-zhay-nee (apologies for those of you with rhotic accents but I don't know how to represent the French 'eu' sound in English without an r - it's the same sound as in French 'jeune' or 'bleu').

I assume the normal English pronunciation would be like Eugene with an ie on the end (and I'm pretty sure I've heard it said that way), so You-jean-ee, but the royal pronunciation seems halfway between the French and the English.

Eugene (and other spellings) can be pronounced as U-jean or U-zhene. So U-zhen-ie is taking one pronounced and adding ie at the end.
