But the "rural rivals" story never mentioned an affair. It just mentioned that the 2 women had a falling out so yes, he clearly is the one that started the rumour
Ok, I'll try to explain more clearly. The rumours had been everywhere for months (at least that I'm personally aware of - maybe longer in the Norfolk gentry etc, which is not me). Then in early 2019 a sort of arms race began in the media.
All newsrooms wanted to demonstrate they knew what was going on, but didn't want to be the first to cross the line and risk legal action.
This happens a lot when journalists are writing about celebrities. If there are pointless stories in the press about someone very famous and you're wondering why it's there, chances are it's a wink wink to those in the know about the real story nobody dares be the first to print. There are countless examples out there, but google Elton John and "celebrity couple" for one of the most obvious ones in recent years.
So the silly "rural rivals" stories ran instead of the real story. Journalists had a lot of fun with it; most people within the media knew exactly what was happening, but lots of readers either believed the story was really about a fall out (which makes no sense) or wondered what the real story was, so started searching on social media to find out.
Lots of people at that point started tweeting the "real" story behind the "rural rivals" nonsense but none of them had any following or any impact until Giles Coren. He was well known, had a large following - so was put under pressure to backtrack. Which he did.
Note, I'm not saying the rumours are true. I have no idea if they are or not. I'm just saying they had been circulating for a long time and were common knowledge across newsrooms long before Giles Coren got involved.
Sorry to derail the thread.
