The royal family

In 3 years a Jubilee, Coronation, 2 x state funerals - how much?

Seriously - since 2021 we have had 4 massive events.

Why is it so hard to find the costs / spend.

Not the usual "a pound per person, worth it, billions in tourisim".

Transparent, freely available, hard core numbers?

How much did we, as a nation, spend on these events in the past three years?

It should be easy.

Boring. This has been done. Too. Death 😴

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 07/05/2023 14:10

Each one costs us lots in lost gdp.

I was thinking this aswell.

Whaeanui · 07/05/2023 14:13

Yes it should be easy to access this kind of information, I want transparency too.

Boring to you maybe but not to me.

Could you help with the data - that way I won't be boring again?

Wouldn't you love something like that on all the costs?

Also - a clear breakdown re who pays for what?

Fascinating question and I don’t think it’s been asked enough until there’s some sort of reckoning between those struggling with heat/eat and those prioritising big parties.

4plusthehound · 07/05/2023 14:21

I think of you like having a royal family you will like/enjoy the events.

If you do not like having a royal family you may enjoy the events but question it.

Either way - we should know that costs because in a way, they are our costs.

Most of the answers you're after are in the other 20 or so threads started over the last 24 hours by people who think like you.

I must have forgotten being given a bank holiday for Prince Philip's funeral though. Could have sworn it was a Saturday afternoon.

The television rights alone make up the "lost" GDP apparently.

£1.29 per year is what I've paid from my taxes towards the RF.

Starbucks gets more than that a week from me. Speaking of taxes.

The fact that it is SO hard to get a number or any tranparency is alarming.

I bet of we knew we would have collective heart failure.

Nothing about that yesterday said "slimmed down" to me.

Try Google. It's all there.

Rednorth · 07/05/2023 14:24

It's hard to qualify as the majority of extra income from tourism predominantly benfits the private sector (which benefits shareholders but has little impact on the tax payer)

This to me sounds like a cute PR answer. It is very...tidy?

This is Mumsnet - one thing we know how to get stuck into here is a budget.

Give proper numbers.

How? Does ITV hire loads of people with the money it made? BBC just laid off a lot of people as far as I know.

Whose was the second state funeral? I am only aware of Queen Elizabeth II having one in the past 3 years. Prince Philip had a socially distanced ceremonial funeral with only 30 people in attendance, so hardly a massive event.

4plusthehound · 07/05/2023 14:31

But I am trying.

Maybe I am just not good at it but I cannot fnd the total cost for the state funerals, the jubilee and the coronation.

If I could find the cost of each one I would add it up.

I think the total spend on royal family celebrations/events in the last three years is being hidden.

I think it must be massive.

I would like to know where the money came from.

When the NHS is haemoraging millions of pounds a day personally I can't get too worked out about what we spend on the royals. Fuck me the NHS costs us just under £420 million A DAY and it won't pay its staff fairly and is failing across the board. I know people will say it's not either or, but across government procurement there's ridiculous inefficiency- projects scrapped after millions or even billions invested in them, inflated running costs yet it's just thread upon thread about the royals.

Inkanta · 07/05/2023 14:33

Yes OP. I don't understand why we dont know and why the public in general are so apathetic about this.

But - how do we know we get extra money from tourism?

We are told this constantly but again - data?

The French get more tourisim that us. They have palaces with the expense of the family in situ.

Yes I would. We will never see it. Because the cost of security is kept secret.

I hope to god there are no more of these events for very many years.

Polarsnare · 07/05/2023 14:34

Also most of the money towards these will have been spent on wages- military, police, security staff, private sector hospitality and events management etc for these events. It's probably hard to quantify because a lot of these would be paid anyway, sure you'd probably pay travel or overtime for some, but why would they employ people to figure out that amount. You can see on their annual report on the website a very broad overview of costs.

Iminthemoneylife · 07/05/2023 14:34

2 state funerals. Have I missed something?

I agree with you about the NHS.

But we know the numbers.

We know some of the numbers. We know the budget they are allocated and we know the cost of most over the threshold procurements. There's a lot we don't. Agency staff costs last year amounted to over £3 billion.
