The lack of enthusiasm for the Coronation

I know this is shallow but I think part of the reason why people aren't enthusiastic about Charles’ coronation is that neither he nor Camilla have movie star good looks plus they're both in their 70s. I bet if both were in their 30s or even 40s, and Charles looked like Pierce Brosnan and Camilla looked like Angelina Jolie, they would have the world fawning over them and their Coronation.

I suppose 20 years ago though, Charles was in the depths of the Diana death, Camilla the mistress, being hated and blamed for everything, so retiring at that time would have been a bad deal for the monarch. It's a good idea though, but it does give William and kate 20 more years to raise their kids and have a slightly more normal life, while dad is doing all the boring stuff.

I've been fairly neutral/un interested in the Royal family, and feel a bit Royal-ed out after the jubilee, death of the Queen, the funeral and now this all in 12 months. Plus the never ending seedy dramas that I catch the drift of on the news. I can't muster up any interest in this event.

I feel like this too. Not a big Royal fan anyway but it does feel like every few weeks we're being bombarded with bunting and Union Jack t-shirts. We have nothing much to do with the Royals for years and then suddenly it's everything all at once.

Topseyt123 · 02/05/2023 14:40

@Roussette Yes, I totally agree. The Queen and her heirs have for a very long time now just been getting older and older before our eyes.

I don't wish to be ageist (I am 56 now myself),but that is more likely to inhibit modernisation and limit any possible appeal to younger generations, where the future really lies.

I sometimes wondered whether or not the Queen ever bothered to do the sums regarding the ages of all concerned. After all, William is entering his forties now. If Charles does go on for another 20 years then he too will be in his seventies before he comes to the throne. George could be 50+ before it comes to him.

Charles was visiting an industrial site near us, quite a few years ago now - you know how they give the royals a little 'job' to do for a photo op? Charles was handed a screwdriver and asked to give the screw in some machine a quarter turn. He had absolutely no idea how to do it and handed the screwdriver back.

When I was a kid, our headmaster was raging at anyone not in full school uniform because Charles was to be driven past down to the local post hotel as he was staying in the area. We all had to line the avenue, waiting - our headmaster was in a state of ridiculous high anxiety, obviously hoping he'd stop and come out to say hello. Charles was driven past and didn't even look up from his newspaper sitting in the back.

Our headmaster was an absurd sycophant and Charles is a product of his upbringing (is about the kindest thing I can say).

I'm in Scotland :) Nobody gives a shit except maybe a few Royal Deesiders and some Rangers fans.

Pretty much this ^

I will watch it as it's a historical event but I can't get enthusiastic about any sort of celebrations after all the events of last year.

There's a village picnic arranged for Sunday and I do like to support the efforts of the organisers so we will probably go.

Srin · 02/05/2023 14:52

I think the queen’s death caused a spike in pro-monarchy feeling and we are now back to previous levels.

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/05/2023 14:53

I’ll be watching as a historical event too. I may be motivated into making a little afternoon tea because I’m stuck at home and bored but I really can’t get excited about it.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 02/05/2023 14:55

I can't drum up any enthusiasm as it's an utterly pointless and very expensive event. Funeral, serves a purpose. Wedding, serves a purpose. What purpose does a coronation serve for a bloke who's been king for a year? The official placing of the fancy hat upon the royal bonce. Nah, can't be arsed with it.

WheelsUp · 02/05/2023 15:02

As a pp mentioned, Prince Louie will probably be most interesting part of the day. When he sat on his grandfather's lap at the Jubilee, he did far more good for Charles' reputation than the millions spent on PR.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 02/05/2023 15:05

I think it’s just that people have lost interest and don’t feel the need to celebrate some random family. I’m looking forward to the parade as my brother is in it but apart from that all I can’t think about is how to provide the food we’ve been asked to bring to the party I CBA to go to as cheaply as possible.

IsItThough · 02/05/2023 15:07

Don;t be ridiculous - people are not enthusiastic because

  • the monarchy is an outdated institution that insults us all - time to axe it
  • a coronation for an obscenely rich person whilst people struggle to feed their children is an appalling lack of judgement
  • people had huge affection for the Queen, and she defined an era, which meant they still tolerated the monarchy - see above
curious79 · 02/05/2023 15:08

This is probably already been said, but I suspect it’s nothing to do with that looks more to do with the fact that it is a ridiculous organisation to have in a modern, supposedly democratic and meritocratic world. We’ve all grown out of tugging our forelocks to our feudal overlords. I’m going to go and see the decorations on Friday around central London, so there’s a part of me that quite like the pageantry. But I certainly feel no fervour

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 02/05/2023 15:10

As a person, I always had a soft spot for Charles and thought him to be intelligent. As a result, I’d have had a smidgen of interest had it not become some enormous ego-fest.

The cost and the ‘pledge of allegiance’ are horrific and tone deaf. When a person shows you who they really are…

Hopefully this is a nail in the coffin of a constitutional monarchy - one that will ideally be long gone by the time William should ascend to the throne.

Inkanta · 02/05/2023 15:13

I know the monarchy must come to an end but it won't in my lifetime. It's values and ethics, such as equality, do not allign with the values of evolving British people. I'm proud to see future generations developing and rejecting the class system.

As for Charles and Camilla good luck to them as a couple in a 2nd marriage but I remember how they mistreated a young Diana and they don't qualify to be King and Queen and head of the Church.of England. Times are changing in many ways - thank goodness.

FredandAmy · 02/05/2023 15:17

Lots of enthusiasm where I live. All the villages and towns are decorated, bunting out and displays in shops.
We’re having a village picnic and cricket match (weather allowing).

Roussette · 02/05/2023 15:18

I am just so surprised at Charles. I really shouldn't be, but I am. I know we are stuck with a Monarchy whether we like it or not, and I honestly thought Charles would be a bit different?

He has talked for two decades about slimming down, but to him that seems to mean only 'working' royals on the balcony. I honestly thought he might have a small short coronation that could be screened on BBC2, with no fuss, no palaver, no gold coaches, just a simple ceremony. Especially as he doesn't have to have anything at all, he is already King.

But the £8M on portraits/pictures of him, along with this absolutely massive eye watering expensive coronation thing has me so disappointed in him. He has talked of giving over houses to the public, he opened Dumfries House for one afternoon a week for free tea and warmth... so what. He could've gained some of my respect (even as a non Royalist) but he's blown it for me.

I wanted to see real quanitifiable change with him. It's not happening.

Hoolihan · 02/05/2023 15:20

I agree that the Jubilee + funeral was probably enough for one decade. This all seems like expensive self-indulgence.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 02/05/2023 15:21

@Roussette thats exactly how I feel. A small, respectful ceremony without huge pomp and circumstance would have won my respect and support.

This circus has had the completely opposite effect.

Choccablocca · 02/05/2023 15:23

AxolotlOnions · 02/05/2023 14:23

Some people may be that shallow but if it is all about looks, how did Alex Johnson end up PM? I think it's about this being a ridiculous, expensive, outdated concept and it is finally dawning on people that they don't live in a democracy.

Alex Johnson - I missed that one, must have been PM in less time than Liz Truss 😂

skyfalldown · 02/05/2023 15:26

I'd forgotten it was happening tbh, no one where I live gives a hoot

and the queen wasn't exactly a looker so your argument doesn't even make sense

angstridden2 · 02/05/2023 15:27

I’m not a Republican, I like the historic links of monarch, but I really think the Royal Family need to be far more like the Scandi version. They’re rich but don’t seem to attract the almost feudal sycophancy that ours do.They’ve also officially slimmed down their ‘royal’ families, even though it’s just a matter of removing titles.I expect they’re still loaded though.

WheelsUp · 02/05/2023 15:28

Choccablocca · 02/05/2023 15:23

Alex Johnson - I missed that one, must have been PM in less time than Liz Truss 😂

I'd forgotten that Alexander was his actual first name too.

CordyLines · 02/05/2023 15:28

No interest in this Coronation apart from frocks and rocks. But I'm getting enthusiasm for the next one, and hoping W will abdicate. Woo Hoo! I can see it happening, William is about as charismatic as a shallow puddle and I don't think he wants it at all. Forget about this one, it's the next one that's going to be interesting....

Crimeismymiddlename · 02/05/2023 15:36

It’s not looks. Times have changed and the Royal Family no longer get a free pass to us thinking they are all fabulous, which is all their own fault.
The event is mainly being funded by the taxpayer-millions and millions of pounds wasted on something that is outdated and unnecessary.
The only thing I am looking forward to is my extended lunch break.

Dollmeup · 02/05/2023 15:36

I'm in Scotland and the only people I know who are remotely interested are the hardcore rangers fans. There's a few union jack bits in the shops but it doesn't seem to be selling!

Nice to have a day off work I guess.
