The lack of enthusiasm for the Coronation

MamoruHisaishi · 02/05/2023 12:53

I know this is shallow but I think part of the reason why people aren't enthusiastic about Charles’ coronation is that neither he nor Camilla have movie star good looks plus they're both in their 70s. I bet if both were in their 30s or even 40s, and Charles looked like Pierce Brosnan and Camilla looked like Angelina Jolie, they would have the world fawning over them and their Coronation.

@Arginalia He is rumoured to be a heavy drinker. As was the Queen Mother.

QM smoked like a chimney too. She must have been very fortunate with her genes to reach the age she did.

AskMeMore · 03/05/2023 18:04

Yes the Queen Mother must have had amazing genes. It wasn't healthy living that helped her live to her age.

Some couldn't care less what they look like

Some people are still upset about Diana

Some people are disgusted with the cost of it all when some of the British public can't afford to eat or heat their homes that's if they are luckily to even have a home

Times have changed and respect for the royal family is dwindling away for many obvious reasons. Some people want equality and having the royal family stomping around totally detached from the real world really rubs salt into the wounds of us peasants who are working ridiculous hours, can't afford a holiday, have our children in crap schools, eating food from food banks and sitting at home unable to do any activities due to money with 10 jumpers on because they are cold and can't get that heating on

This. 100% 🙁.

@derxa In fairness you do come across that way.

😂

KingSpaniel · 03/05/2023 22:52

@Arginalia its not just genes though is it, they have the most privileged lifestyle imaginable - access to medical treatment at the drop of a hat, never have to worry about bills or keeping house or sleepless nights raising kids. None of them have ever done any proper work in their lives. No wonder they live so long 🤷‍♀️.

McSlowburn · 03/05/2023 22:56

I live in a city in the South East and nobody I know has mentioned it. I don't even know what day it's on! Although I'll probably have the TV on.

It’s also ageist OP.

Oh, yes, undoubtedly a factor but it can't be entirely down to this - Princess Margaret died at the relatively young age of 71, well below the national average for a woman at the time.

Margaret smoked 60 a day, she was inebriated a lot of time, she ended up in a wheelchair after probably pissed got in a bath and scalded her feet...
I think the RF tend to look after themselves health wise, they have every opportunity to do so with medical care on hand, along with gyms, PTs, swimming pools, horses to ride etc.
Margaret had lung operations and strokes and died younger.

Thank you @Thesharkradar

I have read the articles but not listened to the podcast.

For those that prefer to read about it... here are all the articles from "The Cost of the Crown" by the Guardian.

It is a real eye opener. And just shocking. I wish some Royalists would read all the articles, I really do.
They won't. Too damaging to the Monarchy to contemplate

Jewellery worth £533M, racehorses £33M, huge fleet of luxury cars, £1.2billion paid to Queen and Charles from estates that pay no tax in addition to public funding, a million works of art kept from the public - no one sees them, 18 castles and estates (there are more in total), but those are the ones kept ready in case they pop in. .
Art collection... Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Canaletto to name but a tiny few, .. you can see a couple of paintings if you pay £90 to look round BPalace. The rest are kept hidden away.

Oh there is far far more, that is 5% of what I could type here.

As pointed out by the guardian team, the palace justifies refusal to discuss the king's wealth on the grounds that he is a private individual, in which case why doesn't he pay inheritance tax like the rest of us private individuals have to?
They do everything they can to have rules made in their favor, and when the rules aren't in their favor they ignore them.
King Charles is smaug the dragon in human form languishing on his pile of looted treasure

Roussette · 04/05/2023 13:52

They are greedy. That's it for me. Just greedy and go back on promises. They squeeze every little bit of money from the public, and never ever giving anything back.

I've said it before (it's important to me!) why can't Charles pay for his own ruddy Coronation. It's a one off for him. Set a precedent for William to do the same. What kudos that would give him, it would sway public opinion in his direction quite possibly, but he and his advisers are so so short sighted and stuck in the archaic ways of yesteryear.
He can afford it, he's a billionaire. Tight though.

AskMeMore · 04/05/2023 13:58

I agree that if Charles had paid for his Coronation he would have attracted a lot of admiration. But you are right, they always go for greed over anything else.

Well.... they won't give anything away unless forced to do so. By public outcry. The Queen agreeing to pay for some tax and then there;s the Windsor Castle fire. The Queen lobbed in £2million of her own money. Big deal. The repairs cost £36.5M which we paid for and by opening BPalace and charging entry to us.

Katherine1985 · 04/05/2023 14:35

I’ve noticed apathy and had very few conversations about it. But the one thing that comes up in every conversation is utter disgust at the cost.

All royal events are incredibly opulent and criticism about that is nothing new, but in context of the CoL crisis the cost is just completely unpalatable.

I'll be watching, but not for the Royal Family.

I love to watch the Armed Forces during the processions, they always do such an amazing job, and I love the music. Watching them march and hearing them play always makes me teary eyed for some reason 😁

Sudeko · 04/05/2023 19:17

It is World Naked Gardening Day on Saturday too!

8roses · 04/05/2023 19:20

@Noomgip there’s a good programme on bbc 2 about how all the uniforms are made - really interesting

Couldn't give a shit what they look like. They can afford to pay for the coronation themselves and they should crack and do so (too late I know)

OhmygodDont · 04/05/2023 20:31

I mean I’m not fussed maybe if it was The wales becoming king and queen but even they feel a little old for it already. But I feel this is just an old chap getting a new fancy hat basically.

We are not celebrating or watching, will be doing the garden and having a general bbq so a normal bank holiday weekend for us.

MrsFinkelstein · 05/05/2023 10:42

The crowds in London with plenty of visitors from across the UK and worldwide seems to show plenty of enthusiasm.

Huge crowds turned up yesterday to see William & Catherine.

We're Brits. We're a bit lazy & moany but we'll turn up at the last minute and enjoy ourselves regardless of whether we planned to our not.

And also some fab news...the Tories are getting their arse handed back to them at the local elections.

AskMeMore · 05/05/2023 11:00

Maybe foreigners are more interested in the Coronation? I am sure plenty of Americans will have come across for it.
