The lack of enthusiasm for the Coronation

I know this is shallow but I think part of the reason why people aren't enthusiastic about Charles’ coronation is that neither he nor Camilla have movie star good looks plus they're both in their 70s. I bet if both were in their 30s or even 40s, and Charles looked like Pierce Brosnan and Camilla looked like Angelina Jolie, they would have the world fawning over them and their Coronation.

I couldn't care less nothing to do with looks

LadyJ2023 · 03/05/2023 13:32

Looks really? Couldn't care less about there looks lol. Hate she is going to be a queen when she isn't and hate lots of his daft ideas unfortunately

derxa · 03/05/2023 13:33

Still, the serfs & villeins are always up for a shindig so I imagine allegiance will be adequately demonstrated. Why do do you use this irritating phraseology? Just because I want to watch the Coronation on the bloody telly doesn't make me a serf, a peasant or make me tug my forelock or doff a cap. It makes you sound like Rik from The Young Ones if you are old enough to remember that.

We've had 2 jubilees, a few weddings, the queue and a funeral in the last decade.
Along with the crown, rehashing all the older events.
I'm all royalled out.

jay55 I'm a hardcore republican but even I enjoyed The Queue.

I don't believe for a moment that the queen's corpse was in there but the relentless tide of shuffling humanity was fascinating.

Still weird, if someone said in a debate I didn't watch it as I hate them and what they stand for because of x, y, z I don't support them I dont see how that weakens the argument. Don't get me wrong if people waste their time on stuff like this I don't care, just didn't realise some people had so little going on in their lives they did stuff like this.

What, you mean stuff like having time to make snidey disingenuous comments on-line? 😁

AskMeMore · 03/05/2023 13:58

@derxa In fairness you do come across that way.

MamoruHisaishi · 03/05/2023 14:19

Sorry to the people who are offended here by what I wrote. I should clarify that I'm not from the UK but I do live in a commonwealth country, and no one here is enthusiastic about this coronation. To the people I’ve asked, they say it’s because it seems boring and lame and full of old people. And also it’s because it’s Charles and they don’t like him. So again, just to clarify this isn’t to do with what’s happening in the UK, I just think people from other countries, especially youths, would probably be more interested in the coronation if Charles and Camilla looked like movie stars and were a lot younger. I think that people from other countries see royals as kinda like celebrities, they like to watch the royal events for the fashion and for the bling and for the pretty people. I am also indifferent to the royal family in general, I don’t worship them or think there’s anything special about them, although I do like the whole idea of the castles and sparkly tiaras and pretty gowns. And yes, Queen Elizabeth may not have been stunningly beautiful when she became queen, but she was lovely enough and young enough which played into the whole pretty Princess/Queen image and her youth gave her coronation a freshness and vitality that’s lacking with this one. Again, I’m not saying this is the only reason or even the major reason why this coronation seems lacklustre, but surely this also plays a part.

I guess that depends on what the argument's about. No need to watch on Saturday in order to debate the principle of the monarchy, but pretty essential if you want to discuss whatever happens on the day

I'll be honest: my learning disabled DS has a real thing about "big events", and since I wouldn't spite him it'll be on mainly for him (and god help me he'll probably arrive dressed like a union flag, carrying a light-up sceptre Confused )
Personally I'll watch the procession and service, but as for vox pops with the strange and interviews with Welby and the like ... err, I don't think so

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/05/2023 14:41

Also it was only a few years after WW2, and after so much deprivation many may have been glad of something fresh, new and colourful to cheer about

AskMeMore · 03/05/2023 14:45

Is that what Charles is telling himself? If he and Camilla were younger the nation would all be enthralled with the coronation?

And there was every chance of Queen Elizabeth's coronation heralding a long and successful reign, as indeed it did. Charles will be lucky to see a Silver Jubilee, let alone a Platinum one; his reputation was tarnished long ago and the first months of his reign have been dogged by controversy over Andrew, and the Sussexes.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/05/2023 14:58

So true, Arginalia
I'm reminded of a previous sovereign saying that "After I am dead the boy will ruin himself within 12 months", except that was George V talking about Edward VIII

Strange how things turn out ...

TiredOfCleaning · 03/05/2023 15:01

TiredandLate · 02/05/2023 13:10

I've been fairly neutral/un interested in the Royal family, and feel a bit Royal-ed out after the jubilee, death of the Queen, the funeral and now this all in 12 months. Plus the never ending seedy dramas that I catch the drift of on the news. I can't muster up any interest in this event.

I am more pro-royal than neutral (and follow the H&M vs W&K gossip shamefully avidly) but I agree that i am also now a bit royaled out.

Usually I iron and drink wine through everything royal but doubt I will even bother this time.

Good grief he won't see a silver jubilee surely? Isn't that 25 years which would make him 99 Shock

Has anyone seen these silver coronation coins with his head on that are continually advertised on the telly? Where does the profit for that go I wonder. There's lots of them ranging in price from £60 to £200

Flappingtarps · 03/05/2023 15:11

I think it was seen to be contextually appropriate to celebrate a lavish Coronation for QE2 , because 1953 marked the end of very dark times after the Second World War (rationing didn’t cease until 1952 or thereabouts I think) and it gave the whole nation a boost. Queen E was so young at the start of her reign. The coronation looked to the future as well as the past - and towards positivity and peace - it signalled a new modernity. And a bit of glamour and mystique was a welcome distraction.

Imho this Coronation could not be more different. C & C are getting on in years. The long reign of QE2 has just ended. The country is in a poor state post-pandemic and post-Brexit. There’s so much homelessness; and children living below the poverty line. Public services have been pared to the bone. The NHS is on its knees. There is very little hope for the future or optimism because the gap between rich and poor is widening and we’ve lost trust in our leaders who are not serving us well. Young people having suffered through Covid are finding it harder to find jobs and get on the property ladder. We’re more cynical as a nation; any royal mystique disappeared in to the ether long ago. Anything too frivolous seems tone deaf and ostentatious in these circumstances.

8roses · 03/05/2023 09:04

And yet there most of you will be - watching like hawks for something to moan about. Why don’t you refuse the bank holiday and go to work if everyone is so poor - give your own wages away. Or do some volunteering. Too busy defrosting your freezers and listening to 80s tunes - that says it all. What a bunch of miseries.

What a ridiculous post.

Flappingtarps · 03/05/2023 15:14

X posts with Arginalia who put it much more succinctly! 😄

Maybe people don’t care because they simply don’t give a fuck?

Me in a nutshell

Roussette · 03/05/2023 15:53

Well said @Flappingtarps

It's a different time and what worked 70 years ago seems ostentatious and ridiculous now. There's certainly no reading the room with Charles!

Some RR bod was on the telly this morning waxing lyrical about 'bringing the country together'... what absolute bollocks.

Arginalia · 03/05/2023 16:50

It's unlikely, but I count it as a possibility because his father lived till nearly 100 and his maternal grandmother to 101, besides Elizabeth making a very respectable 96.

Charles never looks terribly well, though by all accounts has taken care of his health.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/05/2023 16:59

Presumably to the mint who made them?

I recall at the last Silver Jubilee some guy was flogging 25p Crowns to the tourists for a fiver each; he'd put them in those little plastic cases and had sold hundreds before someone stopped him
Wish I'd thought of that!! Grin

AskMeMore · 03/05/2023 17:37

@Arginalia He is rumoured to be a heavy drinker. As was the Queen Mother.
